  • What's usual price?

    • PXC 550 II has replaced this, hence the reduced price. So, RRP of $499 is irrelevant now. It was $199 @ JB, then it went up to $249, and now it is $199 again. I would say new RRP is around $250, but some sell for higher price. For example, PCCG sells at $399.

      • These vs the II.

TLDR: Big upgrade if you use an iPhone, otherwise nothing overly huge. ANC remains largely the same.

        • The biggest difference I can tell from the review is Bluetooth 5 (loseless compression) and low latency (super important in some situations).

          • @Gusper: It appears both models use lower quality blue tooth audio codecs. How about AptxHD, or even LDAC that boasts the highest bitrate of 990kbps and still can't be considered lossless?

Big fan of the old PXC-550, and I was looking forward to the new model. It is beyond me how a manufacturer can produce a new product in 2019 with a micro USB!!! Goddammit!

          • @OpayuOnam: USB-C has a higher cost of implementation

            • @promethbastard: These are not cheap headphones.
Also the more likely reason is that they had heap of micros in stock for production and they want to go through them first.
I fully expect a PXC-550 IIs model to come out with USB C, lol.

  • I have an opportunity mobile with Bluetooth 4, will the PXC550 which runs Bluetooth 4.2 work with it please? Merry Christmas!

    • Yes, it will.

      • Thank you, it's off to North Sydney for me first thing tomorrow to pick one up and get a logitech keyboard and mouse price matched too! And I do believe I might even be early enough to swing by 7-eleven for a daily deal too. :)

  • is the ANC comparable to Bose and Sony?

    • -1

No, it is not. The difference is like night and early morning. If ANC is what you're looking for, look past the PXC 550s.

Don't listen to the chap above. He has completely lost it. They are =comparable*. On a plane I've tried the 550 next to the qcii and they were basically identical. I've only tried them next to the Sony on a bus, so it wasn't the greatest test, but they were still very similar…and I was using them side by side! For the ~50% extra cost of the Sony, it's hard to justify.

Except usb c haha. I want to get the Sony's just to complete my move to C!

      • Hmm.

        Why aren't these more popular?

    • ANC is comparable. I used these for 3yrs before I bought Sony and still think they were better

      • better in AQ or ANC?

        • +1

I have both Sony MX3 and this. ANC is actually subjective (depending on what you want eliminated I suppose) which is why you get very different opinions (one is saying they are comparable while another saying they're very different). My honest opinion is that, for most of the situations, Sony wins. Sony's ANC is just crazy (out of this world). Sennheiser's implementation is pretty good too but it's not as noticeable as the Sony. But what I've come to realise is that Sony cuts most of the sounds while Sennheiser tends to cut most disturbing sounds. For an example, both will be equally effective if you're in front of a noisy fan or aeroplane etc (Sony will still beat Sennheiser). But for conversations it's bit hit and miss (most of the time Sony's better but rarely sennheiser's too). Overall I'd say Sony's ANC is much better (again IMHO).
Having said that I personally prefer Sennheiser's sound (many review say the same). I think Sony's sound is too flat with bit of punchier bass while Sennheiser sound is pleasing with rumbling bass. So, if you are a rumbling bass lover like me, then you would like Sennheiser more. Sony definitely has higher volume, more battery life, accuracy of sound (wider frequency response) etc. But Sennheiser wins over for more pleasing sound (signature, sound stage etc). Again very subjective.. I think price reflects the actual product. If these both were same price then I'd definitely pick Sony. But if Sennheiser is 70% or less than Sony then it's a great buy too..

  • How would these compare to my HD 650's?

    • One is open backed headphones while the other is ANC+closed backed one …

HD 650 is better in quiet environment but HD 650 won't do so well on airplane or in public.

  • Thanks Op picked up a pair this morning :)

    • Which one did you buy?
      How is it?

      • My friend borrowed the PXC550 I bought for whilst I am moving house. He is very happy with them so I may need to purloin them back when i visit next month.

Just for everyone’s info, the Captune app is no longer available through the AppStore (iOS). Means that equaliser functions no longer available. Seems like Sennheiser pulled support for the app and lots of people are complaining
