Do you really need a good CPU Cooler?

So i bought this 3700x and installed the stock cooler wraith prism, honestly, by the look, it sucks, only how many cooper pipes? and it is short, so

doesn't seem to be very reliable,
i was preparing to buy a better cooler once it indeed suck,

well guess what, it is doing a fantastic job, it is unexpected,
so i concluded that expensive cpu coolers are overkills,
as for noise, those water cooler has 2 or 3 fans, which produces even more noise

just like, 32gb ram, unless you edit videos, do 3d modeling, 16gb is too much,
just like sound card, unless you have golden ears, onboard chip is actually pretty good,
just like psu, as long as it is 80 plus gold and outputs enough watts, we don't need 1000w,

the only thing matters is the graphics card, my opinion

So, this is not a question ?

    • +1

      There’s a question mark in there… in a dubious position. Don’t know if it’s a question.

  • +2

Literally anyone that knows anything about computers could of told you the same thing, AMD stock coolers aren't the same as the crap intel used to pair with there CPU's.

just like, 32gb ram, unless you edit videos, do 3d modeling, 16gb is too much,

lol what? you clearly have no idea, 16GB is minimum these days.

I upgraded to 32GB cause borderlands 3 was using 14GB ram and having stutters unless i closed things i wasn't using while gaming like web browser.

  • +6

Yeah stock cooler is fine if you're not doing any overclocking.

  • +6

just like psu, as long as it is 80 plus gold and outputs enough watts, we don't need 1000w,

Except if you do have a bunch of power hungry parts, you need something to power them.

But otherwise dunno the point of this post

    • I think the point of it was not to waste money on PC parts and that for the OP it is good enough to have a 64 page exercise pad and a pen… Or is that a pencil?

    • outputs enough watts

      This is the correct answer.

I had a i7-5930k with GTX1060-6GB hold #1 on 3D Mark with a 450w psu. Upgraded to a 1070 and still had it within top 3 at the time.

Now with a GTX1080Ti, and a 600w psu but lost the bug for chasing a score.

If someone doesn't have a killawatt meter, and they're saying they need this many Watt PSU, they're honestly talking out their ass.

  • Amd had a bad reputation for overheating. So they really worked on all of the coolers that came with Ryzen. The temperature overhead is related to how fast the cpu boosts from what I know. So you can get better coolers for under $50 or make your own to get that last 5-10%. My onboard is not so great, less volume on headphones than a 2011 macbook air. You can get used to a level of performance, but once you spend the extra dollars you start noticing differences.

  • +3

OP Change title to " Is there really a need for better than stock cpu coolers on Ryzen 3700x?

  • +4

Depends on your needs. I only use silent PCs so Noctua D15 is a must for me.

Merged from Overclocking Meaningless? We Don't Need It

So i never understand the need of overclocking, how much faster you can get? it isn't going to halve the time you launch an application yeah? A faster ssd does, it isn't going to make the downloading faster yeah? Your internet matters,
The only thing you can get is a few more frames per second and a little better number on some benchmark applications. You don't even feel it in reality.

And if time really matters to you, you've got a lot more to improve in your life then investing efforts in overclocking,
such as making your time more efficient, find a way to reduce your time spent on commuting, not too much oversleep etc

Maybe stay fit and healthy to extend your life expectancy?

This post is talking about overclocking, why those keep bringing cars into here?

Why cars? why house? Let me tell you this - why do you bother to live if you eventually will die.

    • +10

Not sure where this random judgement came from but ok? We don't need to do it. Some people want to and that's fine.

It's like cars, what's the point of tuning/modding if there's still going to be traffic/police/fines? People want to, so they will.

The only thing you can get is a few more frames per second

I've done it for an older CPU to get more FPS. It has been useful to extend the life of my build for a little longer so I don't need to spend $$$ on a whole new computer.

      Edit

This post is talking about overclocking, why those keep bringing cars into here?

Then why say this about life expectancy?

Maybe stay fit and healthy to extend your life expectancy?

lol. You started it by saying people should do other things to improve their lives.

    • +6

What's the point of being fit? What's the point of anything?

My first overclock I got +75%. The worst I've ever achieved is +20%.

It's something for nothing. It's the OzBargain way.

    • +8

Thanks for finally posting this… I had been waiting for your pc to process your post, as my overclocked device was already on the thread waiting for your content.

    • +2

What year was your first computer? The cheaper Northwoods circa 2000 ran cool and overclocked happily from 2.4 GHz to 3+. Why wouldn't you overclock?

    • +2

“Errr… why do people hot up their cars, we can only go to 110km/h”

Because some people like tinkering with things. Some people like to see just what they can extract performance wise out of something.

    • +1

Overclocking is no where near meaningless; maybe for you but you're not everyone.

If you do renders (3D, video, etc.) then overclocking can reduce that time by minutes.

Just because you see it as meaningless doesn't mean anything.

      • I don't recommend it for video editing or rendering because you can corrupt your render without it crashing the system. I've had samples in the past where it has artifacts, and was not fit for production use.

I heard the remedy was to put ECC ram into the system so it can pickup on the errors, but that defeats the purpose of paying less on the CPU and paying more for the RAM.

      • Why even waste your time posting this garbage, no matter how much you post you will still be irrelevant.

Better of spending your time jacking off.

      • Seriously, what is wrong with you op?

    • -3

Don't even overclock your cpu, your games run the same to you, you don't feel it. Oh you are doing 3d modeling now? if you really are doing professional streaming, modeling not just adding a cube to your Blender, then you have every reason to buy a 16 cores cpu then playing overclocking.

    • +5

Why buy an i7 when you could just get a celeron? Why buy a house when you could live in a cardboard box? Why buy a car when you could walk to work?

    • I would overclcok my pc, except it seems to techy hard for me, but it’s a cashless way to improve performance

      • What cpu U do you have? I'm still running a 4690k and just using one of the preset overclock options that you select on the motherboard. Pretty sure it's running stable on 4.2ghz

    • +8

Sounds like you tried to overclock and broke something

      • And now cant get warranty because it was overclocked and broke…

"Overclocking broke my video card, ergo, all overclocking is stoopid!!! Discuss"

    • -6

OP touched a raw nerve I see.

I agree that it's mostly pointless and done for the same reasons as using those tacky "gaming" cases, peripherals and accessories. It's the nerds equivalent of painting stripes on your shitbox car to make it look kewl. Lame.

      • +4

So buying faster hardware is mostly pointless in your opinion because that what overclocking can do: raise a lower priced component to the same performance level as a more expensive piece of hardware at stock speed.

        • -1

NO what I'm saying is that for most people the extra performance isn't required or beneficial.

          • @lunchbox99: Most people aren't the people who enjoy overclocking so whether most people would get benefit from it is utterly irrelevant.

That's like saying MOST people don't get a benefit of putting race tyres on their car, so whey do people at track days do it?

            • @[Deactivated]: No it's more like saying most people who put race tyres on their car don't do track days, so it's mostly wankery. But each to their own.

          • @lunchbox99: People doing overclocking are generally those that know what they are doing, and are doing it for performance. I don't think Nanna playing solitaire is doing any overclocking.

    • +3

The only thing you can get is a few more frames per second and a little better number on some benchmark applications.

Yes, you get higher performance for nothing.

You don't even feel it in reality.

Untrue but so what if it is.

2 stupid posts in a few days, why?! Why do you feel the need?

      • …We Don't Need It

    • +1

People making stupid posts? We don't need you either.

    • Overclocking for me helped because when I use Premiere Pro, my CPU usage within an online timeframe touches 100% and it's harder to stay in flow, but with a simple overclock I got rid of that annoyance.

    • -1

Not worth it for running computations. For some reason the timing of the clock and other things seem to change. More noticeable on windows systems apparently.

Basically you get more errors in your data analytics. You might able to write code to fix it, but it's going to lead to misleading results in some circumstances.

For gaming, go for it. It's basically free except the extra amount of electricity consumed.

    • No this thread is meaningless

Guys. You have taken the bait.

I find I can hack mainframes faster when I'm overclocking

    • Cool Story Bro.

    • Anyone remember the celeron 300a? It overclocked out of the box from 300mhz to 450mhz and just to be safe you could stick on a golden orb cooler. Noisy as but ran for years without a hitch.

    • +1

Overclocking is a hobby. To which I assume the OP response is 'why have a hobby when you'll just die?' What a nihilistic lunatic.

Overclocking can give you extremely substantial games in performance in some regards. While today is more in the realm of ~10% in most cases. But 10% of free performance is rather a BARGAIN. Something an ozBARGAINer might be interested in. Especially when its extremely easy to do. However through history there have been more dramatic overclocking improvements. 50-100% in some cases. Even more of a bargain.

In the realm of overclocking you also get into bios modding for more free performance. EG flashing Vega64 bios to a Vega56 to unlock the clocks. Or when I flashed a FuryX bios to a Fury card to unlock the whole chip for some pretty impressive gains. This did make for a rather dramatic increase in gaming performance which was absolutely noticable.

My CPU is only a 3ghz base clock, which I have overclocked to 3.8ghz on all cores. That's a substantial improvement which you absolutely can notice in games.

So in TL/DR - its not insignificant, its essentially free, and its fun.

But na screw enjoying life when I'm going to die one day anyway.

    • Yes, you're right. Overclocking once had a usecase for improving general usability, but now unless your trying to run a demanding application like a game or something, there is little point.

However, thats only in relation to the next best use of your time. If you avoid overclocking and avoiding all the learning that goes with it, in favor of doing something even more pointless (like, lets say, making a post on an online money saving forum about the pointlessness of overclocking), then that is not an improvement. At least an activity, no matter if it's worthwhile or not, maintains your skills and keeps your brain sharp.

Later on if you decide to seek something more fulfilling, it is much easier to transition than if you had wasted your time completely.

I’m not sure about OC these days but gee I remember that sweet spot when the Celeron 300a was released. Good times.

    • +1

"The only thing you can get is a few more frames per second and a little better number on some benchmark applications. You don't even feel it in reality."

actually u do. oc is for harcore gamers with top tier gear who want 300fps on 8k, or penny pinchers who want to squeeze the last bit of performance off their bang 4 buck components. most people cant be bothered to oc because they dont care about performance.

also under volting has a huge impact on temperature, and this is something everyone should do since it's so beneficial.

what i dont understand though is why there existed beefy water coolers for things like 1070 when they are more expensive than a typical 1080, no amount of oc will bring a 0.0000001% binned 1070 to a stock bottom barrel binned 1080 performance. probably just to scam the ignorant.

      • I don't normally agree with your comments but this time I do (the last paragraph that is).

    • Overclocking my CPU brought my average framerate in The Outer Worlds from about 35 to 55. It did similar in Star Wars The Fallen Order. Playing both games at 4k, on a 1080 and my 6600k. This jump in average frame rate (and by extension min frame rates and 99th percentile frame rates) is huge for how these games feel. The overclock was from 3.5ghz to 4.6ghz. It took all of 5 minutes to do and a few hours of inactive time to test (running OCCT).

If I didn't overclock and still wanted acceptable frame rates while maintaining image quality I would have had to invest in a new platform. The Z170 chipset is old now, the i5/i7 7x series definitely isn't worth spending the money to upgrade to from a 6x chip. So new platform it is, a Ryzen 3700x would be want I want with an x570 chipset motherboard, which is at least $600 or so. Or you know, I could spend 5 minutes overclocking and a few hours away from my computer while it stress tests to make sure it's stable.

    • "Why do you bother to live if you eventually will die."

      Damn, that's deep.

  • +1

If you do not overclock, then no you don't need a better heatsink.

  • +2

Stocks are fine usually and don't really need to upgrade unless specific needs or passion or just because.

Just like the base stock cars are fine and people decide to upgrade. No really "need" for it, is it?

  • What

  • -1

This thread and some of the responses hurt my eyes

  • Just run a program which measures temperatures. if they get too high, then obviously you need a better cooler. if not, stick with what you have.

    • Runs like a jet engine though

      • Well theres that too. I custom built my pc last year and i spent big on the cooler, my priority was quietness as well as cooling ability. Cheaper fans can cool however as you mentioned, will be crazy loud.

I went with a noctua something, cost me around $130. Have never once heard it nor the gpu fan, even while gaming on a hot day.

You can also sell the wrath cooler on ebay/Gumtree.

  • Yes, 6

  • I need an aftermarket cpu cooler for my Pentium II 266mhz cpu. More so when I press the button, you know which one, the turbo button.
