Samsung Galaxy S10 128GB $16/Month Device Repayment When You Upgrade to $50 Month-to-Month Plan (36 Months) @ Telstra

92

Received an SMS from Telstra about this deal and just signed up. Total cost comes to $576 and I think it's only for existing customers. Remaining phone cost to be paid out if you cancel your plan later.

From SMS, deal expires 13/1/2020 or sold out prior. Only prism white and green currently available. Black will be available sometime in January if you want to wait.

Called through to Telstra to get mine and I can't find it being advertised, so not sure if you can get the deal in store.

Good phone upgrade for those who can't be bothered porting out and in to take advantage of the JB and GG Telstra deals.

  • If you cancel immediatly do you only have to pay $576?

      • +17

I dont have a clue, why do you think im asking genius?

      • +4

        It's a reasonable question - something here seems off…

OP says "Remaining phone cost to be paid out if you cancel your plan later". Plan cost or phone cost?

  • OP, were you in contract?
What instructions or URL were in the SMS to get the deal?

    • +1

Contract just expired last month. Called the 132200 number and followed prompts.

  • did you see its 36 months ???

    • +1

Did you notice that 36x16 is half the cost of the phone?

      • +1

Until you have to pay $50/m for 36 months for usage.

        $66/m for 36m on the cheapest S10.

Whether that's worth it depends on how much data you use and how much is included in their $50 plan.

        • +2

When it was first posted that wasn't mentioned.

Of course, now knowing there is a plan cost on top, this deal is pretty terrible.

  • Just to clarify, is $16/month for the 128gb with 5G version?

    • Not sure about 5G but it's the 128GB version.

    • def not the 5g version - see the link. 5g much more expensive.

  • I had a look into this too, I definitely fall into the category of people who can't be bothered to port in and out. A bit worried about a 36 months plan though, especially with a phone that's about to be superceded

    • +1

If early cancellation fees are equal to the remaining amount left to pay then you could just cancel and pay out the phone for a cheap samsung. Would need to check the terms though.

      • Operator said I would need to just pay out the remaining on phone.

      • +1

yep you just pay the remaining months at un-discounted rate.
e.g. run the 2 years contract then pay out 12x$20 to keep handset and free to move to any plan you want

  • Hey OP - Can you post details of the SMS you received from Telstra?

Would still be worth it to buy and cancel.

  • Can you immediately pay out the phone for the exact price listed with no fee? $16 x 36 months?
On their website it states $20 a month for the 36 month option?

  • You sure it not $16/month for Device Repayment + a Minimum Phone Plan?

    • Thats what im wondering.. this seems too good to be true.

    • $16/month for 36 months is the device repayment. Telstra don't have long term phone plans anymore. They only have month-by-month plans.

    • Operator said no cancellation fee on phone plans and that's what it states on their website.

    • Telstra have 'No lock in' plans now. Just pay out handset if applicable

  • Thought this might be part of their 12 days of Christmas promo but all I'm showing is $20 per month for the handset over 36 months…

    https://www.telstra.com.au/deals/12-deals-of-christmas#lates…

EDIT: Any idea if the $16 a month still offers the new phone feeling at 18 months?

    • Does this help? Straight from one of the docs they provided

      Minimum term and expiry
You must have had your Device Payment Contract (DPC) on an eligible plan for at least:
      - 12 months on a 24 month DPC
      - 24 months on a 36 month DPC
to be eligible to redeem Telstra New Phone Feeling or Telstra New Tablet Feeling. If you do not use this offer by the end of your DPC, it will expire.

Great deal if you could cancel and pay out the phone. But could be targeted.

OP, is there a link that you could share from your SMS?

  • +1

I just received this as my plan expired

The discount applies for the device repayment period. If you cancel your plan, the credit will not apply to any amount outstanding.

So no you can't order then break contract to get cheap phone, if you break contract the full amount less any discount will be due

    • Do you have to have a mobile plan with this? Or can you just get the phone?

      • Plan plus phone repayments

  • This is for phone + $50’plan per month :)

  • So $66 per month for 36 months

    • Note that the $50 / month for the 60GB plan is only the first 12 months

  • +1

Generally they will provide a montly discount on the phone cost. If you want to bail, you forfeit the monthly discount and have to pay the amount based on the FULL price of the phone.

e.g. phone is normally 720 but you only pay 360 with the discount but if you bail, you will pay the remaining amounts based on the 720

    • if you cancel the discount is removed & you will be up $16pm remaining months + $792 if you cancel early, would get them to say on chat you are only up for $16pm if you cancel & ask for the transcript

This is the sms, I got it too:

Yeah nah, plan is a rip-off.

    • Of course rip off. Telstra has maybe like 50 people in marketing team they will think and rethink before launching any promo make sure they are the winner. And what 36 months? No thanks.

    • +1

I repeatedly confirmed with operator that the min. cost was only $576 for the phone as she said there was no cancellation fee for plan. I guess I'll find out if I change service providers…

      • Yes, for the phone. To get the deal though you have to have the $50 phone plan with it. So while there is no cancellation fee, you get footed with the full cost of the phone.

    • TARGETED * just got off live chat , this is what he said - Upon checking for the S10 offers. this is for exclusively selected customers. If you see this on the My Account or on the 24x7 app then you are been selected for the s10 offers discount for 36 months.

    36 months? Crickey

    • +1

I am looking to bail after 24 months. I usually do 24 months
      That means handset repayment of 24x$16 + 12x$20 = $624

  • +1

For those who are thinking to hop on and cancel / bail out asap - Min cost $720 over 36 months plus your chosen plan costs (m2m) still, and u get charged for a full priced phone @ $20 per month (36 month contract).

    • chances are you'll want something new and shiny long before 36 months.

      • exactly. so 36 months is a bloody long time.

and this is from the chat: If you disconnect the service, the remaining cost of the device will be charge and original price is the basis not the discounted one. Min is $720.

        • or direct from the online offer itself?

"Discount applies as a credit over the device payment period. If you cancel your plan, the discount will not apply to any remaining amount outstanding."

  • "Only prism white and green currently available. Black will be available sometime in January if you want to wait."
I went in store and showed them the deal. Got a black phone in hand. Good option if you want one under the xmas tree

  • Saw this the other day. Says somewhere that the discount gets applied at the checkout stage.
Better option is probably over 24 months as you then pay $30 per month for the phone = $720. Not sure if there's any discount applied at checkout for that time period.
If you're not targeted the $16 p/month is $20 by the looks of it, so being targeted gives you a saving of 36 x $4 in effect… but you're there for 3 years unless you buy out your phone.
They're being pretty clever by "saving you" $144 whilst getting a minimum $1800 in monthly call/data fees from you.

    36 months for a phone plan isn't a deal

    • -3

      that's an opinion right?

    • +1

agree, not worth it at all

  • My 2 year S8 plan just expired. I was paying $59 per month for unli calls/texts in Australia - that also included payment for the handset.

Swapped to the $150 6-month pre-paid SIM ($100 at Woolworths) - so paying $16.67 or so per month for unli calls/texts PLUS unlimited calls to about 10 overseas destinations.

That makes the post-paid plans look like pretty crap value given its the same network.

My only gripe on the new plan is that voicemails arent sent as hyperlinked files like they were on post paid - instead now they just say someone left a message, call 101 to listen.

Apparently it's $5 extra per month for "Voicemail plus" which was free on post-paid…

    I'd buy a S10 from Amazon and a 6 pre-paid SIMs - over 3 years you will be miles in front….

    • +1

Consider Boost; full Telstra network (all locations, not speed capped at 100mbps) and you get voicemail delivered over "Telstra Messaging" (RCS) as you're used to. Also, currently $135 for 12 months unlimited calls/texts + 80gb data.

Edit: FWIW I just ported to boost from $59 Telstra plan (with $0 device, and $10/Mo port in discount)

  • +1

Discount applies as a credit over the device payment period. If you cancel your plan, the discount will not apply to any remaining amount outstanding.

    • Just got off the phone with them, confirmed that there is no payout of the service plan (i.e. $50/mth) if I was to D/C at any time. Would only have to pay the remaining of the $16/mth x 36 mths for the device only.

The min. cost stated in SMS is provided to give indication how much it would cost to have minimum service + phone for 36 months. Doesn't stop you from cancelling the month to month when you want to.

      • I queried in store today and got a different feedback- if I cancelled anytime prior to the end of 36 months the phone cost reverts to the RRP (Which is $13xx), the discount is tied to to the duration you'll have to stay with a supposedly "M2M" plan making it a terrible offer.

I will double check with another Telstra store close to work tomorrow and report back; I'd just be very careful with the T&Cs and get everything in writing (i.e. only $16/month for 36 months device repayment; regardless of when you cancel).

  • Strange I got this sms too but slightly different, they offered me $16 a month device repayment with a $60 plan, minimum cost $2736.
