for those who looking to upgrade their 2017 Nvidia Shield TV Pro, this come as a perfect timing.

You put this in the shield in place of HDD?

The Shield TV Pro comes with 500GB SSHD, can be replaced with SSD. The non-Pro version is 16GB nand storage.

  • Is this 500GB M.2 NVME from HP at $100 a better choice given the higher Read/Write speed?

The two drives are incomparable beyond the facts that they utilise solid state memory technology to provide 500GB of storage. The HP is an M.2 drive and uses NVMe. The Samsung is an 2.5" SATA drive and uses AHCI. There isn't a choice if your motherboard lacked an NVMe M.2 socket.

      • I'm aware of that. However I'm asking as if my PC supports both SATA and M.2 socket, would HP be the better one?

Better in terms of what criteria? If judged purely on sustained R/W speeds, then simply divide the prices by the corresponding speeds to give dollars per performance figures and choose the product with the lower ratio.

This of course assumes a sustained R/W workload that is usually encountered when the SSD is used as a scratch storage in video editing & transcoding. For mainly random access workloads, you will want to compare IOPS figures at 4k file size at various queue depths.

        • What's "better"?
A 2 seat ute, 2 seat sportscar, a wagon or mini van?

To give you some sort of answer, the Samsung will hold up better if you are going to thrash them.
If you aren't going to, you probably won't be able to tell any difference anyway, even if a light amount of large IOs come out faster from the HP. Most people don't do that though…

Get yourself an HP EX920 or 950 from Amazon and get the best of both worlds ;)

  • Wow thanks for the heads up. The Samsung 860 EVO 1TB is $175, has it been any cheaper than this before should I wait?
    Cheers!
