  • With this deal, you can get a Pixel 3a and 60GB of data per month for 12 months for $829.

    I think that's a pretty good deal.

  • -8

Crap plan.. I pay $49/m Telstra and get 60GB POM, unlimited calls and text.. signed up two years ago via JB and got a $200 gift card

    • +3

Erm, this is a better deal than that if you want the gift card. $780pa with $500 gift card vs $588pa with $200 gift card.

      • -5

My plan is different to this one. After your calcs, I pay an extra $8.3 a month for Unlimited data? Yes please

        • +1

You said 60GB and now you're saying unlimited data. Which is it?

          • -1

@dazweeja: Lol. From unlimited calls to Unlimited Data. Amazing

          • @dazweeja: Peace Of Mind. POM. ??

            • @Pub Envelope: I have a 500GB broadband plan with shaping. I don't claim to have unlimited data… And are you really exceeding your 60GB every month to make that extra $8.30 good value?

But honestly, do you really think a majority of people would find your plan better value to justify calling this one "crap" by comparison? Or did you stuff up the maths and now you're back-tracking?

              • -2

@dazweeja: I work FIFO and don't have internet at home, so in fact I rarely come in under 60GB a month. 4G speeds are very good so no need for it. I hotspot for smart tv, laptop, game systems.

Anyway what I use it for is irrelevant. I was simply looking at the plans, which is why I said crap plan, and not crap deal. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

edit: and yeah, I definitely claim it as unlimited, because that's what it is. You could continuously download things 24/7 for the entirety of the month and it would not stop.

                • @Pub Envelope: You work FIFO and your employer doesn't provide wifi in the camp?
                  Wow. That sucks.

  • May I buy 2 of these to stack up to 24 months and get the 1000 credit card?

    • +5

      You may not.

    • You may buy multiple services, but not stack the same deal on a single service.

  • can I claim TRS if i use a Gift Card to buy a mobile phone etc ?

    • +2

I don't think that would be a problem. My girlfriend did this yesterday and the gift card is just listed as a payment method along with her credit card on the receipt.

      • thanks

  • I'm hoping for the $45pm 30gb plan with a $200 gift card. Right now good guys are doing a $100 gift card.

    • +2

      $45 x 12 = $540
      $540 - $200 = $340

      $69 x 12 = $828
      $780 - $500 = $280

Would seem that the $65 is a better deal?

  • Can you sell the gift card? Like can I sell the $500 gift card for like $450?

What's a reasonable price to sell it for?

    • +1

Yes the gift cards are often sold around 8-10% off ($450-$460) on Classifieds.

  • So do a lot of people bother to do this just for free gc?

    • +2

Literally took me fifteen minutes in JB and port was immediate

    • Getting compensated $500 for up to an hour's effort?

My salary doesn't make that much sadly…

  • Managed to get the $10 p.m port-in bonus via Telstra Chat, 2 weeks ago. Even got the discount applied albeit pro-rated for the first month.
It was a smooth process (maybe I was lucky). But I believe the $45 p.m plan is not eligible, only $65 p.m onwards (from what I was advised when I called up a few months ago)

    • +1

Nice. Telstra chat reps keep saying it's a JB HIFI plan so no port in

  • Took up this deal a few days ago. Porting took a little longer than expected but was happy to grab a $500 gift card to put towards a new Apple Watch.

  • +1

All of JB and TGG Telstra plans makes genuine Telstra postpaid customers (and loyalty customers) feels totally ripped off

    • +1

      Telstra's fault. Imagine the franchisees.

Well. Government contract too, I suppose. So all taxpayers are getting screwed by Telstra.

  • Is this better or the TGG?

  • If 10 to 15 gb is enough per month, 300$ telsrta prepaid is a better option. You also get unlimited calls to many countries. Good if you have WiFi at home and office.

  • To put it another way, this 500gc just covers the first 7 months free..

Furthermore about $27 per month for 60gb each month..

  • This deal is at its best if you use a decent amount of data, buy your phones outright and buy iPhones.
It’s also a good deal for those that buy android outright but you are more likely to find an Android phone cheaper elsewhere which starts to offset the benefit.
iPhone prices are pretty consistent due to Apples stingy margin.

    • surely you could just get JB to price match?

      • Alot of the best Android deals are Grey phones which won't be matched.
Agreed though if it's local stock then it's worth it for sure.

  • Any recommendations on a iPhone plan for the missus?

She got the Telstra JB $200 gift card deal last year (20Gb data I think), which is about right for her.

This means she is using her iPhone 6s, which is apparently getting old. Don't need the latest iPhone, just whatever does the job better than a 6s. Saw someone mentioned the iPhone 7 on her (I know nothing about iPhones, always been android). Trying to convince her to get an A20, but her family has iPhones and iChat or something like that??

    • How much do you want to spend on a plan and iPhone?

iPhone 6s was released in 2015 and probably has 1 more year before Apple stop releasing iOS software updates for it.

It's called iMessage which is like a Apple only version of WhatsApp.

      • Well..I would like to spend $160 on a Samsung A20+ a plan/ prepaid with 20gb data/ calls (no international required). But I'd assume the camera isnt that great on the A20 compared to Apples offering? OS's are getting closer to being the same I guess and might cope.

If she goes another iPhone it would have to be under 6inches in size. What's the best bang for buck iPhone with a good camera (doesn't need 3 lenses, just good colour definition), that's not huge and rediculously over priced.

        • Have a look at the camera comparisons on YouTube.

It really depends how much you want to spend on monthly device repayments.

Under 6" in size is the iPhone 7, 8, XR, XS, 11 and 11 Pro. The best bang for buck is the iPhone XR.

          • @Twix: Thanks. Just read the 7+ has a better camera, bit slower chip (no issue other than Snapchat filters is guess as she doesn't play games). Might be the go.

  • What is the expiry date of the gift card?

    • +1

Gift cards at JB no longer have expiry dates.

  • Any similar deal in TGG???

  • Can I use this with a 4G modem router? Or does telstra put some sort of restriction?
Planning to get rid of my TPG FTTB and just use this instead at home. I don’t use that much internet anymore, just Netflix and Spotify here.

  • +7

I got myself this deal over the weekend. Here was my experience:

    • I was porting over from the free Circles.Life deal and the account number has letters in it. JB staff was adamant it should only have numbers in it and after 45 minutes of trialling other methods, they figured out that you can still have letters in an account number to successfully port over. So if JB staff tell you the same thing, let them know it'll work with letters!

    • I bought the Iphone XS 64GB which was $1099 (reduced from a higher price) which is better value than the XR. With the $500 voucher, this became $599.

    • I logged into 24x7 Chat and successfully got the $10 port in discount per month on the $65, so I'm only paying $55 a month until December 2020. My mindset is I've paid $1099 for the phone and paying $13.33 a month for 60GB of data!

    This is good if you:

    • Are looking to get a new higher end product and use the $500 voucher.

    • Are a moderate user of data and don't spend a lot of time watching Netflix or playing games. We will plan to tether the data to replace our NBN.

    • Are going overseas soon and bringing the items with you to gift so you can get most of the GST back.

I'm quite satisfied with this deal and feel like it is worth it!

    • Awesome work mate!! 😊

    • +2

Can you elaborate how you got the port-in discount? Cheers

    • Thank you! I'll try to do the same, sounds amazing to be able to get the $10 port-in discount monthly (I thought it was only a one-time 10$ off)
Could you advise us how to do it?
Or is it really as simple as logging onto 24x7 chat, and having luck with a good Telstra staff?

    • Interested in the port in bonus too. Was it pre going to on or post signing up?

    • which chat? and how did you get the discount?

        • +1

they told me they can't change jbhifi plans. so I need to talk with jbhifi customer service. what did you ask exactly to get the discount?

      • +1

Here's a chat I just had today - got the discount, but I had a chat around a month ago to fall back onto… they didn't seem to check though, as they asked questions about content that were plainly in the chat - give it a go!

Telstra: You're now chatting with Codi.
Codi: Hi! I'm Telstra's Virtual Assistant. In a short sentence, let me know how I can help you today.
<my name>: $10 discount should be applied to my plan
<my name>: connect me to a person please
Codi: Okay, let me connect you with someone to help with this. I'll also pass on the history of our chat.
Codi: So I can transfer you, please provide your full name.
Telstra: You're now chatting with <todays-rep>.
        <my name>: Hi there!
<todays-rep>: Hi, <my name>. I can help you out with your $10 discount.
        <my name>: I had a chat with… can't remember name… :( about a fortnight ago
<todays-rep>: To clarify it's for your mobile plan, right?
<my name>: came from optus -> telstra just today
        <my name>: yes
<todays-rep>: Ohhh, I see. No worries, I can definitely help you out with that.
<todays-rep>: Let me just pull up your account first.
        <my name>: sure!
<todays-rep>: While pulling up your account. You mentioned that you should have the $10 discount for porting in from Optus to Telstra. May I know how did you process it?
<my name>: I chatted with someone about 2-3 weeks ago
<my name>: they said if I sign up with telstra before xmas they'd apply a $10 credit monthly
<my name>: chatted with telstra rep on this chat
<todays-rep>: Ohh, no worries, though, I'll check it here.
<todays-rep>: What I'm going to do now is to check the notes regarding with the $10 discount and help you out with it. Sounds good?
        <my name>: sure thing!
<my name>: I can dig up the chat session time date and who it was with
<my name>: no ref number though as your systems seem to strip it out
<todays-rep>: No worries, I can check it here.
<my name>: isn't there a up to $120 off thing on anyway - isn't that the same thing?
<my name>: I enquired well before that, but just curious
<todays-rep>: I see. No worries, found it here as well.
<todays-rep>: As per checking, you were offered a $10 discount if you will port-in your service to Telstra.
<todays-rep>: Cause actually yes, we currently have a promotion on which you'll get $10 discount for 12 months if you switch to Telstra Plans.
And as per checking here, your current plan is a JB Hi Fi Plan.
        <my name>: that's the one!
<todays-rep>: Though Jb Hi Fi and Telstra are affiliated, they have different set of plans and promotions.
        <my name>: that's right
<my name>: that's why I chatted and clarified the offer
        <my name>: check the chat
<todays-rep>: The $10 disccount <old-rep> mentioned before was for Telstra Plans only and JB Hi Fi Plans are not included.
<my name>: I mentioned I'd be coming via jb - and the operator said something like it doesn't matter
        <my name>: check the chat
<todays-rep>: I see. May I know if you have a copy of that transcript?
        <my name>: I do indeed!
<todays-rep>: Oh, I just need the part where my colleague said that it didn't matter and I can coordinate it with my supervisor to check on what we can do about it.
        <my name>: yep - the relevant line is from <old-rep> -
        <todays-rep>: <my name>: "I see I agree to you, its fine it's still a telstra'
<my name>: the subject of the whole chat was whether I'd get the $10 discount if I came back via jb
<my name>: I think she asked, but not sure at all - but certainly above line was said, sounded fine, so I've ported in
<my name>: I doubt such an offer would be available on the likes of belong or aldi, but this is a co-hosted plan, on Telstra's systems - I even spoke with a Telstra account person when I signed up
<todays-rep>: I totally understand, <my name>. And I have alerady coordinated this with my supervisor.
        <my name>: ok
<todays-rep>: And as per checking, he mentioned that we can definitley honour it.
<todays-rep>: And for us to apply it, you will have to go to your nearest JB Hifi store and provide this reference numbers.
<my name>: yikes! JB hifi quite a ways away from me
<my name>: made a special trip there today
<my name>: how come I've got to go back there?
        <my name>: seems a bit strange
<todays-rep>: Ohh, I totally understand, cause again, JB Hifi and Telstra Plans are different with different promotions. no worries though
<todays-rep>: Thanks for waiting, <my name>. What we can do here is to apply the discount of $10 for 12 months through lump sum amount of $120. How's that sound?
        <my name>: that's perfect - same thing really
        <todays-rep>: Yepp. I'll process this now, <my name>.
<my name>: great! thanks again for checking!
<todays-rep>: It's my pleasure. To confirm, have I resolved your enquiry today?
<my name>: yes, thanks for your time and assistance!
Telstra: Thanks for chatting with us.

        • +1

ps JB Hifi is probably 5 minutes from me, but I was going to stick to my guns on that one…

The JB rep was quite adamant that no $10 discount applied, btw, when I signed up.

          • -4

@crazyj: if possible, can you provide the reference number to this chat so us other ozbargainers can utilise this too.

    • In addition to this, just learnt the Iphone XS was reduced to $999 today at JB, so will go back into JB to get another $100 off. Everything's coming up Milhouse.

  • When does the gift card expire

    • It doesn't.

  • how would you compare this with the $64/month s10e on optus deal. only downside to that i can see is that it is 24 months

    • Well… you mostly just answered your own question! :P
It's Optus, 24 months, and I'm sure you can compare the plan inclusions to validate the rest of the differences.

I think you just missed out on the $99 upfront S10e deal on the same JB Hi-Fi Telstra 12 month plan.
If I knew this offer would re-appear, I'd be telling you to wait for that one! It's been offered twice now, so I wouldn't be surprised if it comes back!

  • Has anyone from Boost or Telstra managed to Port out and then take this deal without waiting 31 days?
How do they know if you have been on Boost prepaid?

    • +1

I have heard Telstra can see when that number was last active on their network, but again that's only second hand information.

I have personally previously ported out and back in within 10 days. I was simply asked how long I'd been with Optus for.

Your experience may differ, and it might mean you need to cycle through a few JB HiFi stores before you get someone that will help you.

    • I reckon it depends what JBHIFI employee you get. I have never been with Telstra so I was fine, but before we started the process the lady that served me checked my full name and mobile number in their system and it showed that there was no record of any current or past Telstra service. I don't know if it picks up Boost in this search.

  • I'm with Optus atm, if I change from post-paid to pre-paid to avoid port out fee, should I use Optus pre-paid at least a month? then can I port in to this deal or post-paid / pre-paid deal?

    • The rule is simply not to have been with Telstra for a month. :)

      • What do you mean? there's no port out fee for porting in to Telstra?

  • Tried twice with Telstra live chat and I wasn't able to get the discount. how many people managed to get it so far?

  • Is this 60gb per month or 60gb for 12 months?

    • 60gb per month but this deal is $50/m for 60gb/m atm

  • Also is this the same deal?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/496486

    • same content but different deal. this deal ends 24/Dec

    • and in store only

    • Yep it is. So technically a dupe but since it was extended from 15th to 24th so good reminder for everyone!

  • Ported from Telstra to Circles.Life a week or so ago. Wouldn't mind porting back for this deal, but I was told by the JB staff that you have to be ported away for a minimum of 3 months :/

    • +1

It's technically 31 days but I successfully ported back in within 3 days.

      • I was told that it gets flagged in the system if you've been a recent Telstra customer? Is there a special way that the port needs to be done?

Someone at another store told me 30 days… Confusing

        • +2

Nup. The second they pull up your account after you give them name and ID, they'll see when you've last been on Telstra.
It's up to the employee to give two craps about that.

At the first store I was told a blanket "no, you literally ported out 2 days ago"
Second store I was told "I know what you're up to but lets see if your application goes through"

    • +1

Visit another store and just SAY you've been out of Telstra for a couple months! lol

    • Just get a $2 sim from kogan or amaysim or anyone else then give them that number once activated.
It might take a week to go through - but it works fine.
Unless your using a single sim phone, it works a treat

      • I don't really want a new number, though

  • +1

so there is no chance to get that 10$ discount as few people said before?

  • So I enquired todayat JB hi-fi.. This JB Hi-fi plan doesnt come with international calling. And they said, this plan cannot be topped up with 10 bucks international calling like Telstra plans. Has anyone done that before?

    • +1

it says its available on my plan - but the international calling top up is a rip off

      • Hey mate, so you are on JB Hi-fi plan and you have option for 10$ international calling top-up? Wow, I would buy the JB Sim in that case as I do need international calling.

The internet call on WhatsApp seem to lag and distort all the time.

    • The JB HIFI $65pm 12m contract states that all international calls are PAYG. I know a lot of people are deterred by this because international calls are important but afaik the $10 bonus pack is only available on normal Telstra plans.

  • +2

Signed up for this deal today and I rang Telstra 30 minutes after and got it switched to $60M2M! The phone convo was:
“it is possible for me to please get $10 off for porting from Optus?” And the guy had a look and said,
“the jnhifi plan gives you 20gb bonus data so I can’t give you $10 off”
    And then I said
“I’m pretty sure I only get 60gb, if I can’t get the $10 could I change to the 60gb for $60 Telstra plan, because that’s $5 cheaper than what I just signed up for?
And the guy asked his supervisor and I didn’t have to pay the ECF! Yewww!

    • +1

Noiiiice! … ring again, talk to someone else, and get the $10pm port in credit. ;)

    • Wow M2M with no ETC !!

  • +2

Got off live chat. First guy was completely on top of the scheme and didn't give me credit or let me go on M2M. Explicitly said I was on JB HIFI plan and can't change! Second person, super nice, applied the $10 credit "every month till I recontract or cancel", their words, without one question. Amazing.

    • damn nice going!
I've tried quite a few times but haven't been able to get anything :/

      • I've tried a second time and I was even told that I've previously asked before and was already told that it was not possible lmfao.
Seems like Telstra has closed the loopholes and it is just the select few who get lucky with clueless people.

(It also seems like I get quite a few people who have pretty bad English - I've had someone talk to me as if I was his mate from high school in very colloquial terms, and others who have copy and pasted large chunks. From reading through this thread I think the people here who got a $10/month discount or change of plans had people who had far better English than the agents I've talked to)

  • Has anyone actually got the 500 gc… then paid $390 ETC and be done with it? I got a second number that I was about to cancel with Optus but won't mind getting the $500 for $390 if it will work.

    • what's ETC?

      • early termination charges

        • so you'll earn $110 doing nothing?

          • @nicozam: Pretty much yes.

            • @diazepam: going to jbhifi now, I hope it's still valid

              • @nicozam: It is still valid.
I’m not sure if it comes up under your credit checks btw - my Optus and Virgin ones came up but never seen a Telstra check. But perhaps something to consider if you don’t have a strong credit history…

                • @diazepam: they didn't want to apply the port in bonus discount. even if I showed them the chat transcript with Telstra..

                  • @nicozam: Yeah it's been a real struggle getting it applied.
It's not something done from JB's end - it's from Telstra's end so you'll need to chat or call them.

I've tried 3 different people, all have come back with a resounding no. :(

          • @nicozam: Well not nothing, u still gotta rock up and have all ur ID.
