  • Is this compliant on a cruise?

    • +7

They are compliant, but just remember the walls on the cruise are mostly metal so don't expect the best results with these, they will work on islands and walking around the ship but won't be perfect. Cruises did used to offer them as a option so they do work, but not perfectly.

      • Thank you for your response

        • +1

Oh and check local laws with islands too, as some countries don't allow it :)

Good price - I've got these and the kids have blast with them

    • Thanks

  • you think these would work 500m in suburbia between houses and no hills? I was assuming a 2watt min. Or do major Australian cities have duplex. Thanks, noob. And kid-safe means people can still listen

    • No.
I usually use the similarly powered Oricom ones you can get from supercheap or repco on road trips/convoys.

Distances of more than 2-300m already has pretty bad reception.

They do look pretty good for the price. $15 more for 2 watts and privacy codes. Mighty Thanks, Joe

The Ansoko look outside the legal channels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB

        • Thanks. Could you explain what not to do like im an idiot? is it the adjustable frequency range?

          • @white-rhino: Buy one in a store in Australia. Then you have come back.

            • @ShipShapeRC: as you can probably pressume, Im cheap. Amazon's choice on Amazon.com.au is enough ''Australia'' bought I think for negligence sake.

      500m in suburbia between houses

As much as I like old-school radios, mobile phones would probably cover that scenario pretty well ?

    • I have got close to 100km range from an older 0.5w uniden. I needed to be 6000 feet above ground level though (paragliding). Its the obstacles that are a problem rather than distance.

Kid-Zone is just Uniden's marketing term for CTCSS. By enabling it, you can suppress other (outside) conversations on the same channel, which helps prevent your kids from listening to truckies swearing, but it doesn't prevent other people from listening in on yours if they wanted to.

    • +10

Truckies would probably learn a few new swears from kids these days

Bought it. Now where we could get the 12x reliable AAA rechargeable batteries? Any deal for Panasonic eneloop ones?

    • ALDI?

    • ALDI/IKEA

    • I use the coles rechargeables - work great

  • +1

Rechargeable batteries from IKEA - supposedly/apparently their LADDA batteries are genuine ENLOOPS, at a price which makes them by far best value around.

  • 1/2 a watt, that's not a lot of power. Ok for the beach perhaps, kids in the backyard or playground.

Wish I had these as a kid lol

      • -1

I wish I had my 5W uhf handhelds as a kid. We had walkie talkies, but we could do better with a Koo-Wee in the bush.

  • I used to have "Bob the builder" walkie talkies when I was a kid, used to pick up the work sites up the road so we'd annoy them haha.

  • My daughter just got the 35 for her birthday. Work really well compared to the Dora Explorer etc walky talkies. The kids zone isn't on the 35 and would be handy, but really just need to move past the first few channels to get a free one.

  • Anyone know if these motorola t600 would work in Australia since they are ordered from amazon US? Motorola T600 Talkabout Radio, 2 Pack https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01DM7AKOI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i…

    • They don't rely on existing infrastructure so should be fine, don't know about legalities though.

    • +1

Illegal to transmit, would get a visit from the ACMA party van.

If you want something more powerful get Uniden or GME

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/uniden-uh820s-2tp-80-chan…

      • Those uniden uh820s might be a lot more money, but they are really good! And LEGAL, which is peace of mind. 5W is still better, but I have used 2W in shopping centres and the like. They will be much better than 1/2 watt ones in this post.

  • +4

Upvoting because I wish I had these as a kid.

  • Looking for a built-in battery for the kids. Any suggestions?

    • The uniden UH820s mentioned above have built in battery packs and chargers. Much better units.

  • I got this set for my kids, not a long range but way better than your basic you shop walkie talkies. Batteries seem to last a fair while.

    • +1

How much range are we talking?

      You in the suburbs?

      • I've got this exact set, and surprisingly was able to hear my husband 500m away. He was at home, which is up a hill, and I was walking to the local dog park. It dropped out as I turned the corner (would have had more buildings in the way).

      • +1

We're on farmland and it gets about 200 to 300m with a couple of trees before it dies out. Not sure how it would go with buildings. Great quality within that range for us!

  • question - are these legal to use when driving?

  • +1

2W or go home. Good for 500m if you're lucky.

  • Any idea if there any issues with using this overseas eg in US ?

I bought thinking it would be useful to stay in contact with family members when on overseas trips and we split up at the mall, and not everyone has mobile data.

    • Lots of stories of police drilling holes through if caught with one in Switzerland, don't know about USA.

      • What's wrong with them!

        • Just not the correct frequency to be allowed to be used there. I think you need 2m band radios there.
