    ^— i like the idea of the BT-R7 .. how's that work ?

any chance of an OzB only deal with the BT-R7 + the receiver ? :)

    • +3

We have set the pricing as low as possible for OzB members.

Unfortunately the truth of the matter is this deal includes free shipping Australia wide around $18-$20 for a 11kg item + paypal fees which I might add are exorbitant at around 2% total price + 30 cents admin fee. Happy to take off $4 if anyone wants to pay via direct deposit if that helps

The BT-R7 is also discounted from normal retail around $119 :)

      • +2

This is a bona fide deal and I can see the rep has went to alot of effort to get the price as low as possible. Much better than the last Sherwood amp advertised on here. Now to convince my parents that I really need an amp so I can hopefully build a home theatre eventually :)

        • +1

Hey wolfenator87, I'm guessing you were born in 1987? I suspect that makes you 24-ish… isn't it time you top asking your parents to buy $200 amps for you? ;)

P.S. I +1'd your post, it is a good deal and well done rep.

      • BT-R7 available from Crazystu for about $107 incl. delivery.

        • Honestly, if you want bluetooth for your amp you could save yourself some money & just get the Belkin one from Dell (or wherever) for around $40:

          http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&l…

IMHO $100+ for any proprietary BT adapter is outrageous!

        • +1

I wouldn't bother with bluetooth at all. I've tried one of the belkin units, and although connection and range is no problem the quality of audio (music) over bluetooth is rubbish. BT is fine for a phone call, but not for music.

        • Yep, watts is absolutely correct…I would just rather waste $40 than $100 to get a mediocre result! ;)

        • Yeah, it's 'cool', but a $5 3.5mm RCA lead would be a better bet.

I use BT Audio in my car, it does sound a little off the mark (mind you it's a good system, on a so-so system maybe it would make no difference)

Does anyone know if DNLA better quality? It should be if it was designed to do video, right?

  • +8

User's should note this model is "pass through" HDMI only.

It can not decode/play audio from the HDMI inputs, a separate digital(coax, optical) or analogue connection is required for audio.

    • doesnt that kinda defeat the purpose of the hdmi inputs ?

      • +1

Yep it does, however there were models like this that only supported "pass through" mode, most of them are discontinued models now.

The receiver needs to support "HDMI repeater" mode to be able to play back the audio from the HDMI input.

    • +1

This is true and not really an issue if you consider the fact most people don't even have HDMI on their amps per se. The fact is this offer gives people a cheap opportunity to upgrade to a unit with HDMI video 1080 support. Coax & optical cables are cheap around $5-6 and are supported on all the HD STB's and PVR's I know of. The other major fact is that this amp is well respected for audio quality and many good reviews, supports DTS etc etc

      • +2

Yes but it does not support hi-res formats found on Blu-ray(Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio).

You need HDMI inputs(with audio) to support these, coax/optical can not support them.

You could use the multi-channel external 5.1 input if the user has a Blu-ray player with 5.1 analogue outputs.

        • Thanks for the heads up, mate. I really don't know much about amps.
I'm presuming most BR players of today exclude the 5.1 audio outputs in favour of a single, streamlined HDMI cable?
This amp is not particularly future-proof but some may still find it a good deal if this not required. As for me, I'm gonna do some research before I even contemplate buying one.

        • Yeah generally Blu-ray players that have 5.1 analogue outputs cost $500+.

With lower cost models you need to use HDMI if you want the hi-res audio.

        • -1

          wolfenator,
when Blu-ray was designed, the marketing people told the engineers they had to "upgrade" the audio over DVD, not matter how good it was already. So we get 7.1 and more bits. It is a bit like the Schick/Gillete razor blade wars.

Most of us are very happy with the DD/DTS 5.1 . The quality of amp and speakers is much more important.
BD (not called BR) players all have digital s/pdif output, same as DVD.

        • The benefit of the hi-res audio on Blu-ray is that they are lossless, compared to the lossy versions of DD/DTS it gives improved clarity, detail and greater dynamics.

It's like comparing MP3's to CD.

        • +3

It's like comparing MP3's to CD.

With a good encoder and sufficient bitrate (192k for most people, 256k for you), they are indistinguishable in a double-blind test.

        • That's a debate that is best left to other forums.

I use MP3's in my car but prefer CD's on my home system.

        • Yeah, once you open that can of worms you'll then find the old analog/vinyl vs digital/CD debate might rear its head again too! ;)

        • Haha very true StewBalls that's the one that usually follows the other :)

  • Seems like a great deal to me, if I didn't already have a receiver, I'd be on this like white on rice - considering places like WoW have the no-name brands that look like they're made by a 12 year old for similar price - great work rep - keep them coming!

  • +1. Really good deal, If I needed a cheap AMP this is where i would come.

  • Does this amp decode AAC? My old one does not, which is a bit annoying, as I have to manually switch to analogue.
Its not in the specs, but then neither is MP3.

    • No I don't think it supports AAC or MP3 natively.

  • So this + Xbox 360 or HD STB via HDMI would give me full 5.1 channel surround sound?

    • +2

No you need coax or optical connection for digital 5.1 sound, sound over HDMI will not work.

If want you full HDMI audio look around a few stores for a Pioneer VSX-520 you should be able to get it for $250, it supports all the hi-res formats on Blu-ray and 3D video passthrough.

      • Please let us know where the 520 can be had for close to $250? It is $350 at pioneer's online outlet.

        • +3

Go into any JB, HN etc and offer them $250 for one, it's likely they will accept as the 520 is now a discontinued model so stores will be clearing them out.
JB have it on there website for $307 you should be able to get $50 off that, the lowest I have seen is $230.

You can get the replacement model 521 for $399 so anything above $250 now for the 520 would be a bit high http://www.rio.com.au/product/4/7/783/pioneer-vsx-521/

      • legendary advice. good work!

      • or yes with coax or optical. Glass half full?

      • +1

or this refurb deal with HMDI audio @ $209 delivered

        http://junglejumble.com.au/sherwood-rd-6505-5-1-channel-av-r…

        • That's a good deal delivered for that price.

  • is there any mic input on this receiver? i need to get something cheap for karaoke for my inlaws

    • yes & no mic input is really only designed for auto speaker setup

  • reading above comments, i note down: Blackrose knows a lot about amp, etc. one day if i really want to set up my home theatre, i will ask blackrose for help :P

    • Thanks alwayseric :)

      You can message me anytime.

    • Agreed.blackrose's knowledges are respected and much better than most salesperson i met in the past.ozbargain is much better place now coz of the person like blackrose.

  • Out of curiosity, what is "one touch automated speaker set-up"?
Am hoping it uses a microphone at your seating position to automatically balance the 5+1 channels.
Or am I asking too much?

  • I'm tempted to get this for my pc. arggggh….

  • Sorry..a noob question…can this be used to drives Beyerdynamic DT880 PRO 250ohms phones?

    thanks

    • They would work on this amp but not very well and you would not get very high levels out of them, a separate headphone amp would be the best option.

  • Guys, Im a noob when it comes to AMPs, I already got a Panasonnic BD with 5.1 connected to my LCD and Desktop (Media Center) which also support 5.1 via HDMI (Audio+Video). Can I use this AMP to get good sounds via my BD player? If it does, Im really interested on this.

    • It will work but you need to use an optical or coax digital connection with the main amp in the listing.

You may want to consider the other amp listed by the jumblejumble rep http://junglejumble.com.au/sherwood-rd-6505-5-1-channel-av-r…

That one will accept audio over HDMI, you just need to set your Blu-ray player to decode the audio and send multi-channel PCM over HDMI with no loss of quality, and the amp will play this back fine.
