Crofton Oval Cast Iron Roaster 4.7L $24.99 @ ALDI

160

According to the reviews I have read online (eg: Cast Iron https://www.reddit.com/r/aldi/comments/9hkcr6/cast_iron_cook…) it seems to be a good quality BiFL Le Crueset knock off for one tenth of the price.

To quote a random Redditor:
"I bought the 12 inch enameled on the outside, ceramic coated on the inside over a year ago. Didn't realize it was coated on the inside. I tried to remove the coating with a drill and sanding pads. Even got down to 40 grit, not a scratch! I now ignore the instructions about not using metal utensils, this baby is tough. Great pan would definitely recommend Aldi cast iron."

I'd love to hear some reviews if some OzBargineers have bought this previously.

I bought a similar Crofton cast iron pan from Aldi few months back at the same price.

Pretty happy with it for its easy-clean and nonstick features although it's heavy.

    Will buy this one either

Don't have an expensive French one to compare with but it stews foods better than a Maxwell & Williams casserole made in France.

We have one, and we use it all the time, or the expensive French one, which was a present. They are both excellent, and which one we use only depends on the size of what we need to cook.
The Aldi one is first-class. Suffice to say, we gave one to a nephew when he moved into his first house, and will get one for #1 son, who has just moved into a share house.

Bought one of the original ones when they came out years ago, still going strong..

The lid handle broke after being dropped, but we "upgraded" to a Le Creuset one off ebay - cost about as much as the pot!!

Couldn't get parts from Aldi, literally my only complaint.

Is this usable and safe on a charcoal grill?

    • I'd assume so, but if I was only going to use it on a charcoal grill I'd rather get a Lodge, better off with just seasoned Cast Iron without the ceramic coating. Probably be about the same price on sale.

I have a few from previous promotions (pans, pots, grill pan etc) and they are great for daily use (once they are seasoned and you get used to them). I guess you can say I Crofton often.

    "All stovetops" includes induction yeah?

Edit: Sorry, weird displayed formatting on that monospace font hid that part of the post. The answer is "Yeah!"

For the price they are excellent. If you have no other cast iron cookware and cooking a meal is a requirement of living, they are perfect. Considering you need to go through 15-20 to come close to the cost of a Le Crueset, they are a great product on a budget. I've got a small saucepan I use regularly because it is the perfect size for cooking rice to two, I've only used plastic utensils in it and it's scratched quite badly. I also got a big round roasting dish with a lid, I've only used it once because everything stuck to it and it's hand wash only. It needed an overnight soak to get clean. On the plus side the lid fits my big non-stick frying pan so that gets occasional use! I also got the dutch oven because it was a bit smaller than my Le Creuset, which is a size more suited to batch cooking rather than just one meal.

I got mine the last time they went on sale, maybe 6 months ago? I'm wondering if that round had a different supplier to what they had previously because I was a little disappointed by how roughly made they were, given how much hype and rave reviews I saw.

If you are a keen home cook, I'd fork out for the Le Creuset if you value good quality cookware and have the cash - even if just one! Keeps the heat more even, cleans up easier (dishwasher safe!), doesn't scratch and somehow just cooks easier and better. Go to a shop and look at the difference - the cast iron is thinner and the coatings are smoother. I'm sure in this place no chump here would pay full price for one and they go on sale constantly.

I'd compare the difference between something like a $15 hand mixer vs a $500 Kenwood or KitchenAid mixer, or a $10 knife vs a $150 Global. They all do what they were intended to, just one does it better than the other.

    • Strange you're saying they scratch easily with only plastic when most other reviews says they're pretty much impossible to scratch. Maybe take it back and try your luck with another one, they have a 5yr warranty. I'd rather pay top dollar for a Le Crueset if these won't last, but this model is pretty small so I'll take the risk and if I'm not happy just buy a Le Crueset when I want to get something bigger.

Nah I don't live near an Aldi, it's a special trip so more trouble than it's worth for a $15 saucepan. I will add it's not not super deep scratches all the way through the enamel, but considering it's newer and gets less use than the Le Crueset (which is still immaculate) and mostly used to cook rice, I thought it worth mentioning.
