Nintendo 3DS - $248 with a Free Game

110

Nintendo have announced a price cut for their Nintendo 3DS, and in Australia, EBGames will be selling them for $248 with a free game (Super Monkey Ball 3D) from August 12th.

Other retailers will probably be offering a similar price around the same time.

  • Nice move.. a more realistic price and also competitive range to fight against upcoming Vita!

Nintendo's problem is not the Vita, it is iphone and android.

      • I think you will find it will be the vita. Even then, the Vita is still targeting a different market within the same market, the same way the PSP did against the DS.

For those who are ill informed on the handheld worldwide market, the PSP actually sold fantastically well and was by no means a fail on any level (not including the PSPGo of course which bombed). It is still widely popular throughout asia.

iPhone and Android are a completely different market to handheld consoles.

  • $199-$219 sale price around Christmas is expected then ?

It's a shame they're region locked, as they'll only $150AUD in the USofA once they get their price drop :(

    • They are?

I have a US DSi, and the games here still works.

      • Yep, only US games will work on it, as well as the 3DS store being region locked too apparently.

        • It is region locked. I am going to buy one from Amazon and get the games in the US. Cheaper anyway

      • The 3DS supports all DS/DS Lite (essentially the same thing) titles regardless of region locking. foreign DSi enchanced games (of which there are only a few) are not supported on the 3DS due to DSi enchanced games being region locked.

You will often find EB games selling american versions of DS games due to this. Its also why you can trade in your foreign games as long as they have been rated by OFLC.

I think the US price will be US$170 from Aug 12, so AU$248 is still a rip off.

  • I was wondering what our price drop would be on the back of the $150 in US, and as usual we get screwed over - I'm going to wait till the next batch of 3DS's come out before I get one anyway, but that region locking was a dog move from Nintendo.

  • Is the Nintendo 3DS A NEED or a WANT.. :) I'd just wait IMO

    • A need, its amazing

    • A want. It sits in my draw.

    • if it was a need youd have one by now and wouldnt be asking lol

    • a video game console is never a need. If you arent sure, dont buy it at a price when its newish to the market. wait a year from release at least and the price will drop substantially. There are AMAZING DS games out there that eclipse everything on the 3DS (except maybe OoT) by a country mile.

if you buy it before aug 12, you get 20 free games

    • Huh?

      • lol, free from their virtual store, which are the crappy 8bit nintendo games from yore

I agree with that post except for the word 'crappy'. Such games are awesome!

        • I would say those games are not crappy. Better to say it will bring old memory back while playing Mario kind of games. & To play advance games, we have PC, PS3 & Xbox. Yeah, it's a fact that right now, there are not much good games for 3DS but there are so many in development & going to release soon. like NFS - The Run.

  • This is an attractive price, but i'm more interested in DSi XL.. It's still selling at about $250, anyone knows if this is going to come down in August as well?

    • It was $180 at myer…

I presume its over now. Look online they had it there with about $8 shipping.

      • Still $180

    • I saw one at dick smith for $198 I think

    • Thanks guy … will try out the Myers store tomorrow to save that $8.

  • So I guess the earlier DJ deal of $199 is the standard price.

Had a 3DS, then sold it.
Issues : The 3D screen gets scratched from the side bars on the touch screen, and really the games aren't that great at the moment and not many of them. Very poor design from Nintendo. This will probably be fixed in version 2. (3DS XL ?)
And the damn thing is region locked with no flash card for 3D games.

Other than that, the 3D works great and isn't a gimmick.

Still looking forward to the vita

This model of the 3DS has a lot of design problems, many reports of loose hinges and the bottom screen permanently scratching the top screen. I suspect that the price drop is because of this and that they're going to release a slim/lite version next year.

I already got it for $199 in April. Now looking forward to have 20 free games.

Meh, still aren't any killer games to justify getting one. I've been a big Nintendo fan since day 1 but I'll admit that they have been going down hill since the Wii came out, and this has made me some what annoyed. Will wait for the 3DS Lite if I do even decide to get a 3DS. Hopefully they'll have a stronger library of games by then because atm, it's looking to be going down the same path as the Wii. It annoys me that Nintendo seem to be just milking ports of old classics on the 3DS. They're just taking advantage of the nostalgia associated with them. They have to do better than that. The Wii U doesn't look like it's going to change how I see things atm either. I'm actually worried for the first time since the NES, that I'm going to stop buying Nintendo consoles.
