Major Price drop in Nintendo 3DS - $250 August 12th

Problem: Not enough people buying your handheld system. Solution: Lower the price drastically. Nintendo announced those very measures today, with a retail price drop for the Nintendo 3DS that takes the price from $249.99 to $169.99, effective August 12.

Nintendo is positioning their new low price point right next to the cavalcade of incoming big-name titles, such as Star Fox 64 3D (September 9), Super Mario 3D Land (November), Mario Kart 7 (December) and Kid Icarus: Uprising (holidays).

In addition to the price cut, those who purchased a 3DS prior to the August 12 markdown will be able to download 20 free games from the 3DS eShop. What could that net you? How about ten NES Virtual Console games, which will be available after September 1, and ten Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games, which are on their way further down the line. NES titles that will be available range from Super Mario Bros. to The Legend of Zelda, and some of the GBA titles include Yoshi's Island and Metroid Fusion.

The price cut isn't just limited to North America. In Japan 3DS is dropping from ¥25,000 to ¥15,000; in Australia, AUD$350 to AUD$250; and in Europe, Nintendo says the price is dropping by about a third.

  • that's a pretty sweet deal especially for those who currently own a 3ds too! 20 free games on some classic gaming.
If you can get it on the cheap just before august 12th anywhere under 299 then those 20 free games look a lot more apetitising.

  • But still, $169.99 in the US, and $250 here, another example of oz getting overcharged.

    • indeed! stupid region lock :(

  • It's very nice of Nintendo to this, and also reward it's previous customers as well.

I think mostly it's because of the new PlayStation Vita that is coming out too.

    Nevertheless, good consumer satisfaction.

  • Silly Question, but if there is that much of a price difference between the US and the AU model, and the same goes for games, why dont you just buy the US version and import US version games?

  • I think it's probably due to the fact that some online retailers aren't allowed to ship a 3DS over to here.

    • where there's a will, there's a way.

  • they are sh*t scared of how the PSvita is gonna roll them
