What Deodorant Do You Use That Is Effective?

I am finding now that the temp is starting to warm up I am breaking a sweat in the 10 min walk from the train station to work. By the end of the day I may not smell the best despite how much spray deodorant I put on. I have found previously that the super expensive ~$20 a pop stick deodorant where you push it through a sieve at the top kind of thing works great, however the cost is way higher than spray deos. What value for money effective deodorant do you use?

Currently using Rexona spray but it isn't very effective.

Roll on. Rexona. Around $3 at the reject shop. May need to apply several times a day if you’re a bloke.

This is how you know OP is a true Ozbargainer

    • +1

Well Qld has been pretty hot and humid this weekend :p

  • +3

I break into a sweat just thinking about a 10m walk.

I use Dove, or if you prefer perfume free Mitchum deodorant/Antiperspirant

    • Is that a spray?

    • +1

Yeah I use Dove men anti perspirant spray

It works AND it also doesn't smell like a 15yr old boy

  • +1

Dove is, Mitchum is a roll-on.

Mitchum is expensive to initially buy but lasts for ages.

    https://www.priceline.com.au/brand/mitchum?cat=115

    • Mitchum is $10 at Coles and Woolies. It's the only over the counter roll on that works for me, most of the time.

      • I saw it for $3 the other day. Where are you located.

        • Around Epping. But I'm talking about getting the clinical one that usually goes for $10-$13, not the normal roll on

    • The standard Mitchum is cheap and works extremely well.

        Nope.

If male no need to worry about sweat

If female, I sweat a lot so let's get it on

  • +1

I'm on stock standard Rexona spray. If you're concerned, take another can with you/keep at work and have a respray when you get there. Additionally, a decent eau de parfum will help keep on top of any "aroma".

    • +1

do you spray in the office? i have a friend whos work colleages get upset if you spray in the office. :)

      • +1

Of course. Helps to define my workspace.

      • Thats the one thing I hate about organised sport. Every locker room is basically a rexona gas chamber, can't stand it. I'd put it up there with second hand cigarettes in terms of disgruntledness.

  • +1

    +1 to Rexona

L'oreal for men has a special 'thermic resist' version designed specifically for higher temperatures. I started using it years ago and have never changed since. They're not cheapest but frequently on offer at Coles and Chemist Warehouse. Highly recommend them as they're fantastic for heat sweats and really does last all day.

    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/85464/l-oreal-men-ex…

    • +1 for this. I also use L'Oréal men's Thermic resist and they last whole day for me. This is my go to deo for summer days.

    • +2

I second L'Oreal too. I use the Shirt Protect ones - which don't leave yellow stains on the shirt armpits. That used to be a real problem with the Rexona and Nivea ones.
Coles currently have a 50% off on all of them.

      • Thanks for the heads up, managed to stock up at Coles for half price. Looks like they've changed the packaging now to new bottles. Hopefully formula stays the same.

    • Okay, I'll give it a go.

Any feedback on white powder stains on clothes?

      Thank you =)

      • +1

No powder or stains at all! Recommended.

  • Rexona / Brutes good to

  • +4

If you're after a toxic but effective fix, dri-clore or sweatblocks (from USA that ship here, but are expensive) will do the job.
Otherwise I've found the rexona cream roller seemed to work well

    • +1

Another plus for Driclor…..this stuff works a treat. No longer sold in Oz unfortunately but worth every cent if you want a guaranteed fix.

      • +3

        Hey guys!
I'm a pharmacist and I recommend Natio For Men Antiperspirant Deodorant. It's 18% Aluminum Chlorohydrate so the highest % you can get in Australia now . It's always been about 1/2 the price of Driclor too and alot cheaper if you are importing it :)
        Its worth a try.

        • Once my Driclor runs out maybe I'll give this a shot cheers

      • +1

Driclor is no longer sold in Oz? I use that stuff once a month and it works a treat. How do you ship it in now?

Also OP I use moo goo, it's a little pricey but I like it. But to actually stop sweating I use Driclor once a month like mentioned above

And by the end of the day, it has combined with your natural body oils to produce a unique salad dressing to have with dinner.

    • +2

Other natural alternatives are tea tree oil (wipe Mede arms), coconut oil (which has you can add essential oils to for smell factor). These rely on killing bacteria that causes odour.

Personally I buy Native deodorant from USA. It has been Rated by several sites as No1 natural deodorant. It really lasts for ages. It definitely stops moisture too. It doesn’t have all the nasty chemicals that store bought ones do.

they offer sample boxes quite often and that is 3 full sized bars at a really good price. I buy 3 st a time anyway.

Black Chicken Axilla Paste has been listed on Australian reviews as working well. I think it is Australian. They have some offers now online. I have bought it in health stores. I prefer Native though.

      • Do you buy from Native directly or from somewhere else? I'm looking for a natural deodorant as I usually use them but need to switch to a different one.

  • +4

Mix it up with other brands every now and then. I find that if using the same brand every day it tends to become less effective over time.

    • -1

Might be because the scum has built up from the same antiperspirant\deoderant compound in the pit.

When you change brands you are "shock treating" your pits.

Similar with cleaning products with a scum film building up over time. Then you need a different cleaner to clean the residue of the first cleaner. Back and forth it goes.

  • +6

Here's the secret: SHAVE YOUR PITS. Thank me later

    • Then read the list of ingredients of some sprays. Darwin getting closer. Skip cheese in summer and find something safe to roll on. Have you tried to bomb the hair with IPL?

    • Wax chestbacksackncraic also

      • Given as it is already bushfire season and off the scale atm, perhaps less ppl will need to be attempting this than normal

    • +1

Tried this. A few days of regrowth later and my pits are extremely itchy and uncomfortable.

Dove Clinical Protection moisturizing cream roll on. Best one I've found so far.

For the last 15+ years, I’ve found a ‘crystal deodorant’ to be effective. Each stick is less than $10 and lasts for many months with daily use. The crystal deodorant stops/reduces the stink and I always use an aluminum free roll-on. My current usual one is this. It might sound a bit new age, but it works for me.

Plenty of water & a reasonably healthy diet makes a difference to body odors as well.

    • +1

      This!

My brother used it when he was backpacking all over Nepal, with a consistent diet of spices and a lot of hiking involved and swore by it. Introduced it to me give years ago and I was sceptical at first but have never looked back since.

It's natural, fragrance-free, without any added chemicals and actually works as opposed to masking any smells with fragrance.

    • +1

Thirding this one, crystal (potassium alum) deodorants are the best I've had in ages. Stopped getting yellow strains on my white shirts and doesn't make me stink the whole day.

    • Personally I found this stuff helps with stink a little bit but definitely does nothing for sweat levels.

      • +3

I think the name "deodorant" has something to do with that. What you're thinking of is an antiperspirant.

    • +1

Seconded, been using it for about 6 months and am very, rarely stinky - it also allows me to use cologne and not have conflicting scents.

    • Yep. I went over to this because I hated the sticky feel of normal roll-on. I don't tend to get too stinky normally anyway, but this seems to work well for me. A bit different to normal stuff as you need to wet it to apply as it is essentially a big salt crystal.

    • +1

I've used them and found they simply do not work for me. I end up smelling just as bad as I would without it. It's a real shame because I really wish they did work for me!
My Dad has used them basically his entire life, swears by them.

    • Which store can we buy this (or a similar one) from?

      Thanks

      • Try Chemist Warehouse or any of the larger chemists, or most health food stores. I can’t recall if I’ve seen them in the larger department stores?

    • I checked the ingredients of the mtromance sandalwood online: Aqua (Water), Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Fragrance, Polysorbate 20, Methylcellulose, Fusanus spicatus (Australian Sandalwood) Wood Oil, Methylisothiazolinone (and) Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Triclosan, Farnesol.
Why do you call it 'crystal deodorant'? It does not seem to be anything like 'crystal' at all? I thought crystal deodorant is something more like this: https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/85190/dermal-therapy…

  • +8

a deodorant doesn't stop you from sweating. you need an anti-perspirant. it's the aluminum in the spray that blocks the sweat pores.

  • Nivea Cool Kick, things like Lynx, Norsca and Rexona just covered up temporarily, also most made me itchy.
Lynx has such an appealing range with interesting names and advertising campaign, but it was just a cover up fragrance that I found I was relying on.

  • +1

QV antiperspirant deodorant. Has no perfume, but stops you smelling. Roll on lasts well. Sprays are not reliable - often stop working properly before they're finished.

  • +2

Like FrugalBugger, I use vinegar; not white, but Apple Cider Vinegar.

It won't stop you sweating but it really does stop the stink because it kills the bacteria. Decant some into a travel-size squirt bottle and use twice per day (morning and night) to start with. After a couple of weeks I found one daily application worked well. You will smell like vinegar but the scent disspates within a minute.

I use Aldi brand ACV. $3.29 for 500ml.

    • Does it stain or discolour clothes?

      • +1

I wear predominantly dark colours and I've not noticed any discolouration in clothes. It's close to a year since I started using ACV.

  • +5

    To stop sweat, use https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/68106/No-More-Sweat-…

Use at night, after a shower and completely dry, then spray on. You do this for a couple of days and no sweat for months - works everywhere on your body, not just armpits if you know what I mean! I have tried the deodorants with "No Aluminium"and they are absolutely useless for me

I do get what you mean ;) proceeds to apply to forehead

The guy who gets the office girls is the one who looks as if he has healthy pursuits out side of the work environment.

You can achieve this perception by smell alone. Simply buy a sports deodorant and apply liberally.

Psychologically the girls will conjure up a perceptions of you being a hero, a man that can clear obstacles, open doors and place a coat over footpath puddles.

Be this man. Walk confident to the train station. Have conviction in your stride.

Plus, take a can to work and top up during lunch.

    • Damn I'm sold, where is the link to buy the stuff you're selling?

I use Rexona Black + White Antiperspirant. You didn't mention antiperspirant specifically, so I really hope that's what you mean, because regular awful smelling spray on deodorant used by teenagers because they're not ready for real perfume/cologne obviously wouldn't do anything.

  • We use 48 hour protection deodorant/anti-perspirant from Aldi. He uses Silver Mist and I use Desire. Both are mostly used daily and on the few occasions we missed a day, the protection really did last 48+ hours, even in the summer. I tried keeping track of my use but it took well over a year to go through 2 containers.

  • Lynx 48h

  • Being a Korean heritage I don’t stink and never purchased a deodorant. Research shows that Koreans have no BO causing genes?

I tend to sweat a bit & a few years ago started on the Mitcham deo. Works well & Cincotta Chemist in Merrylands NSW has had it for 2 for $5 for a while now, not sure if other Cincotta's do.

  • -1

    Why bother ?

  • +3

Mitchum. Not even the fancy clinical one. Just the standard one. $3.50 or so. Men's and women's varieties or unscented available. It works so well. I used Dove until I found this brand a few years ago and I've never looked back.
