What Deodorant Do You Use That Is Effective?

I am finding now that the temp is starting to warm up I am breaking a sweat in the 10 min walk from the train station to work. By the end of the day I may not smell the best despite how much spray deodorant I put on. I have found previously that the super expensive ~$20 a pop stick deodorant where you push it through a sieve at the top kind of thing works great, however the cost is way higher than spray deos. What value for money effective deodorant do you use?

Currently using Rexona spray but it isn't very effective.

I concur! I use the $3.50 unscented one and it works pretty good.

    • It can be had for as low as $2.40 from chemist warehouse when it's on sale!

Hands down the best I have ever tried, way better than other common brands.

  • I have never heard of this until tonight, thanks to above comment referring to No More Sweat, whose website mentions drionic devices that can stop underarm sweating for weeks. drionic.com. I am not endorsing this, just passing it on. Good luck.

  • This works for BO without any chemicals or antiperspirant, but it is so damn expensive:
    https://motherdirt.com/products/ao-mist

  • I just use Nivea and it works well and it's always on sale on Amazon for less than a dollar.

  • I work outdoors and have my fair share of 10 minute walks. Shield roll-on works for me. I've found spray isn't as effective as roll-on to stop BO.
    +-$3/stick.

  • If it's a big problem, you can get Botox injections to stop sweating.

Never done it myself but a former workmate did and swears by it.

  • Try applying deodorant at night before you sleep. And then again when you wake up for good measure. If you apply it just before going out and you immediately start breaking into a sweat when you walk out then the deodorant isn't going to work. It needs to seep into your skin and it can only do that when your armpits are dry. When you sleep your armpits are drier than if you were awake doing nothing.

  • I used to also sweat at the drop of a hat. It was really depressing. Rexona Red Roll-on was the only cheap one that worked for me. I tried the fancier ones too.

Aerosols like Lynx, Brut, etc smell cheap and stink like a high school change room. Really makes me cringe if I smell that on an adult guy 😅

  • +4

I recommend not being overweight and drinking lots of water.
This is from personal experience. When I was about 25kg heavier I use to sweat doing anything but once I lost sone weight and upped my water intake I just stopped been stinky.

    • +1

Yeah I'm drinking around 3l a day and gym 5 days a week. My BMI is above average but not from fat content though. Have always sweat like crazy all my life

  • +1

OP you need to use an antiperspirant and not deodorant if you want to stop sweating. Also it should be applied the night before you go to work, which gives time for the antiperspirant to completely dry and block up the pores.

Roll-on antiperspirants are generally more effective than the aerosol ones as well.

    • Currently using rexona antiperspirant and applying after shower at night and in the morning before heading to work. I don't necessarily want to stop sweating, just need a more effective way to control the odor.

Just have excess adrenalin, worked for Prince Andrew

  • The spices are where it's at. Life is boring without it.

    All Spice, All day

  • Get a proper perfume with appropriate longevity. EDPs usually last a lot longer.

  • Mitchum non scented is the best, lasts for freaking ever. Cologne on top of that and you're golden.

No pong works the best! can handle 24 hours and hard work in central Queensland mid-Feb! Won't buy anything else anymore! https://www.nopong.com.au/products/

I love this stuff too…anything else tries to "mask" the odour…. this stuff seems to stop the odour.
it won't stop you sweating, but your sweat won't stink!

  • Hate spray deodorants myself, but you do you.

Deodorants are also a very individual item - what works for me may/may not (more likely) work for you. And our sense of smell is a funny thing too - most people don't recognise their own odour (you smell it all the time and humans are good at ignoring regular sensations), but from my perspective I don't stink and I don't really smell the deodorant either.

I use Nivea for Men Deodorant Roll On Stress Protect; usually $3-4 for the 50ml.

Tried a few different ones a while back and stuck with this one.

    • How did you decide to stay with Nivea, was it more effective?

      • Been a while since I started using it, so this is more reasons why I continue using it.

        • seems to do the job in terms of antiperspirant
        • doesn't make my armpits feel "swampy" after application
        • not strongly scented

But again, YMMV. I have a desk job and am not overly physically active, so the amount I sweat could be drastically different to you.

Try the deodorants but also consider shaving your under arm hair, or at least trimming it. Bacteria tends to multiply more with it.
Also use a light exfoliant on your underarms and not just plain soap. Helps to clear the bacteria and smell.

  • +1

Have you considered shaving or trimming hair around those areas? I know you asked for Deodorant solutions, but thought maybe it would help

  • Try what others have suggested + drink recommended amount of water.

I use rexona spray first thing in the morning, then apply roll-on throughout the day as needed. That way the quiet open plan office doesn't hear "HISSSSSSSSSSSS" a few times a day. I'm sure i'd get someone with asthma complaining.

  • +1

    Depending on what I'm doing:
Mitchum roll on unscented to actually stop perspiration and prevent odour (if put on the night before seems to still prevent sweating the next day, even after a shower)
    or
QV roll on aluminium free, which doesn't stop perspiration but does prevent odour

  • Gotta use antiperspirant instead of deodorant. I hate the sensation of wet underarms.
I find them to be equally effective and I make a choice based on the scent.

By the way, the way you perspire varies on your genetic background.
So this thread may have mixed advice.

What value for money effective deodorant do you use?

If it helps the discussion, I choose to use Brut roll on.
The spray deodorants have bruised my skin, the pressure isn't good for your skin and hold it too far away it doesn't apply well.
Brut goes on sale for $2 from $4 so it's pretty affordable.
I haven't used a lot of the brands people are mentioning here except Rexona I don't like the smell of.

Dove works the best, but smells like soap.

Adidas and Nivea Mens smell nice, but I find it doesn't last as long as Dove.

  • Apply antiperspirant before you sleep and you'll stop sweating during the day, even after a morning shower.

    • +2

      This is not true!

      • Why? It worked wonders for me.

  • Do you mean deodorant or antiperspirant?

Im looking for a good deodorant but the antiperspirants I use (Australia really doesn't define the difference well) are whatever is on special that doesn't stain. Sprays don't really work for me. I need a roll-on.

  • This is an effective combo: use an old glasses spray bottle (or something similar), fill with water and put a few drops of tea-tree oil and a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar. Spray that in your underarms and rub with one of those crystal deodorants. Now the hippy bit is over…. Let it dry. Use normal antiperspirant (Rexona or something).

I think it works because the hippy stuff kills bacterial and the other stuff stops some sweating and smell (plus a nice scent).

No pong natural deodorant.. i know the words natural might be questionable on the effectiveness of this product but i assure you its amazing and a life changer. You can purchase online or at some pricelines. After being pregnant i had issues with my body odor and heard its quite normal.. but it was not for me! Nothing worked and i started trying the strong expensive stuff and it didnt help. No pong to the rescue it works wonders! Cost under $5 if i remember correctly, it is well worth at least a try! My body got a slight red rash at first but after a few uses it went away and now no reaction besides smelling fine and fresh once for 18 hours during a crazy crazy day! Gl hope this helps you as it did me!

  • For me anything with a "nice scent" turns into a stink and I hate the smell of deodorants mixed with sweat.

I just scrub hard with a brush and plain soap but might try vinegar or tea tree oil for extra cleaning power or maybe jiff?

Then Mitchum no scent antiperspirant. There used to be another brand but they stopped producing it.

But people have different odurs that react differently with different deodorants while some people love the scent of certain people's body odour.

  • Nivea roll on

  • I use Palmolive gold soap in the shower, it claims to be a deodorant soap, but it does make a difference. Then s spice deodorant stick ….doesn't have sharp smell once put on and is fairly neutral ….under $10 combo, as at Cole's or Woolies. The morning shower makes the difference as then bacterial need to start to multiply from start again.

  • Try changing what you eat. You are literally sweating out what you have eaten but could not get rid of using the normal outlets.

  • +1

    Lynx Africa.

  • This is probably the best thing anyone can use to get rid of BO. Use it after a shower. It's a natural deo stick so no chemicals. There is a spray too, but I don't know how effective that is. You'll thank me later.

    https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/85190/Dermal-Therapy…

  • Lynx Africa, yes its effective - fending chicks off left and right.

    • +1

Works on middle-eastern chicks all the time, 60% of the time.

  • Rexona is horrible stuff.

Dove superior. Try it, or your money back.

  • The Dove/Rexona roll on that goes on half price all the time at Coles. Ends up about $4/bottle.

  • I'm still baffled seeing the number of people who use deodorant several times a day. Deodorants are suppposed to be applied when you are clean after a shower. Using deodorant after 4 or 5 hours wil it make worse later.

I see those people in the gym using deodorant in the middle of a training, that yucks man.

  • Just the Rexona/Dove Clinical. I don't like sprays- don't feel they're as effective.

  • Magnesium oil

  • +1

Dove Sensitive Roll On, No smell.

I stock up at chemist warehouse when it's half price. 1.94.

Used to use Rexona one but they stopped making it. Dove is the only one ATM who make a no smell roll on.

Even better price right now at CW, https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/buy/87748/dove-for-women…

  • Cornwells White Vinegar.

  • My dude, I am in the same boat as you. I have experimented heaps. I use Mitcham's Clinical which works the best! I recently travelled to Japan and Korea and is definitely a winner.
Others have suggested the roll-on which I haven't tried but will give it a sus! :)

  • You probably do smell, it is just that after a while your nose becomes used to it. Same as when you go to the toilet and you are laying some bricks but you don't pick up on any smell.

  • If you want something that works and will stop wetness then try Driclor. It is the ONLY antiperspirant that will work. But word of warning. It is strong. Your armpits will sting and become itchy. But it absolutely stops any wetness, even here in hot and humid Queensland. I have tried everything and only this will do the job.

Also on this, the sting will go away and then you are dry for well over a week. It depends if you want to put up with the pain to begin with.

  • Native Deodourant. nativecos.com

Deodourant not an anti-perspirant. I use the no-scent one.
I found supermarket products were actually making me sweat more and I tried HEAPS.

Fun fact: The scent of a healthy man contains a chemical (andrastadienone) that is known to change moods, regulate the menstrual cycle, increase sexual and physiological arousal and brain activation in women.

Compared to their response when sniffing a control odor (yeast), the women who sniffed androstadienone reported an improved mood and significantly higher sexual arousal, while their physiological response, including blood pressure, heart rate and breathing, also increased. This was consistent with previous studies.

    In another study,

researchers applied extracts of underarm secretions from male volunteers to the upper lips of 18 women between the ages of 25 and 45. None of the women knew that male sweat had been applied to their lips, and some thought they were involved in a study of alcohol or perfume or even lemon floor wax. The women then rated their moods over six hours of exposure; they consistently reported feeling less tension and more relaxed.(…)

"This may open the door to pharmacological approaches to manage onset of ovulation or the effects of premenstrual syndrome or even natural products to aid relaxation," said one of the researchers.

Op,consider charging women to sit next to you on public transport. Your sweat, assuming you're healthy, is more potent than those snake oil scented candles, essential oils and what-nots that many women spend a fortune on.

    • Yes but if they let it fester for half a day the study may have different results

  • Remove your sweat glands like Bruce Lee

  • reduce sweating: antiperspirant, any thing that's not a spray should work.
    reduce odour: hand sanitiser.

  • Use Adidas silver can. There are only a few that work well for the whole day.

  • Follow up question.

Ok so I'm good with different antiperspirants for a while but are there any good body wash or soaps that you guys or girls use?

  • +1

I've used 'No More Sweat' from Chemist Warehouse for a while. It's been great at reducing overall perspiration and stopping sweat marks on clothes. You only need to apply it every couple of weeks and it actually works.

  • Lancome - Bocage Deodorant Stick

  • Stupid question here. Is antiperspirants safe?

  • +2

FWIW if your underarms look like a squirrel's tucked under them - that'll give any deodorant a workout - remember at Uni it came up in a microbiology class that the bacteria that causes most body odour (comes from multiple things) thrives if there's a lot of hair as they live on it.

Hence think if it as habit destruction and by either keeping your arm pits trimmed or shaved (which I do and FWIW I'm in the RFS and work a rural property so not a 'pretty boy') you'll find that it's much easier to keep body stink at bay with just regular products.

Haha why not run your own experiment if you like and shave one, while keeping the other looking like a French leading ladies' and use the same products on each and see how you go.

  • Windex

works 60% of the time everytime

  • The only antiperspirant I've found that works for me (generalised anxiety disorder, so I sweat a lot) is a cream called Dove for Men Clinical Protection Antiperspirant Deodorant Clean Comfort. I go through it quickly though so it can get expensive.

    • Yeah the Dove clinical protection stick things have worked GREAT for me in the past, that is what I have had a few times. The only problem was the $$ so I was hoping to find an intermediate value option from the ozb community. Got a few options to try here

  • I'm fortunate in that I rarely sweat and never stink.

Stinky friends though have had great success with bi-carb soda. Look it up.

  • Have you tried anti antiperspirant

Ask friends if you stink, after a day,

Not everyone stink, as I found out recently and this confirm of my SE Asia trips, most Asians dont stink, its genetic.
I couldnt find deodorant when I was Thailand a while back

Some westerners luck out, but few and far between.

  • Turn that 10min walk into a 15min walk and you might not sweat, just force yourself to walk slowly.

I do the same biking to work, minimal exertion on the way to work, full power on the way home. Trip home takes half the time.

  • Hello kitty is my favorite bubble gum is on sale at chemist wharehouse

  • Another thing to try besides deodorant is laundry sanitiser.
It could be that your clothes are stinky, rather than you. Try adding laundry sanitiser to your fabric conditioner when you do your washing (don't put it in with the laundry powder).
Dettol do a version https://www.dettol.com.au/products/laundry/dettol-anti-bacte… and Aldi have a cheaper alternative.
I find that using laundry sanitiser really helps - I used to have to change tshirts after every one-hour aerobics class, now I can get away with wearing them for another class.

  • There is a baby powder deodorant spray you can get called dry idea. You could try that one.
