Very good spec, but i bet that screen is a 60hz, correct me below.

    • -2

probably because anyone with any sense would connect it to an external monitor with faster refresh rate.. who the heck is going to want to game on a 17" screen? you may as well be using a Nintendo Switch! :)

      • -2

Yeah I dunno why people really care about the screens on a laptop tbh. Much better to just connect it to a proper monitor. Even if you're gaming on the go, it's a god damn 17" screen, chase harder at fps nerds!

      • +3

I used to do WoW raids on my 17" laptop while watching TV. I would sometimes get distracted the raid leader would yell at me to stop watching MasterChef.

      • +8

Nothing wrong with a 17” screen. In fact it makes for a better gaming experience over smaller screens. It just won’t be as smooth at 60hz compared to say 120/144hz refresh rates - Something that you would expect with a high end graphics card. But given the heavily discounted price on this unit it’s forgiven. Note it does have a 300nits display (usually 250nits) so it will be good for outside use.

P.S. comments about using this laptop, or any laptop, with an external monitor is just stupid. If that’s what you plan on doing then you should be getting yourself a desktop PC, not a laptop.

        • -1

Yeah but a laptop is a tax deduction. So take ~25% off a laptop like this and you've got a good spec desktop replacement

          • +1

            @mingofmongo: Can't a PC be a tax deduction too?

          • +1

@mingofmongo: You can do same for a PC

            • @Top G: Yes, but if your employer allows it you can salary sacrifice the full amount of a laptop all at once, rather than deducting it (and depreciation) over several years.

      • +4

we made it 20yrs or more on 60hz im sure its fine.

      • -1

why the fck are u buying a laptop if u are just gonna play at home

  • +2

60hz… why oh why, with these very capable specs otherwise.

It's like running a v8 engine in a mirage, can't unleash the full potential.

    • -1

You say that but it's not going to be able to hit constant 60fps in RDR2 on high.

    • -1

      It's a laptop.

I have the model up from this (i7 9750h and 2070 RTX). Battery is maybe 2-3 hours at best while gaming. It's incapable of gaming on battery unless you're playing old games, anything else has poor performance, games with Ray tracing will be about 0.5fps and unplayable. It's the kind of laptop you want to keep plugged in.

Expect CPU throttling especially with Intel Turbo Boost on. I ran tests on mine and had to undervolt it and cap the turbo speed to 3.4ghz to prevent any throttling. For good measure I created a custom fan curve in Alienware Command Center (the default curves keep the fans still as long as they can, up to around 60-70 degrees) and got a cooling pad.

It was idling at 60c, now it idles at 38-40c.

Overall it's great for a home laptop to keep on AC power primarily but does need some tuning preferably.

      • Custom fan curve, you mean like fan does not work until it reaches 60 to 70 degrees

        • Yes the fans don't spin at all until it heats up. You can monitor them on the Alienware Command Center which comes installed on the system and they are at 0% speed. The same software allows you to create your own profile though and set the fan speed at different temps.

          • @Saltysez: That’s so weird but I guess computers are moving towards fanless given how consumers are demanding laptops to be like tablets fanless design

  • When the fcuk was it $3300?????? Wasn't even on release date, stupidities 😂😂😂

    • mate back then ssds were expensive af, like 250gb name (assuming samsung 960 pro) is like $350.
although the cpu is 2 years old even though its i7

      • +1

350 for you when you're buying one then lol. Less then 50 for them when literally buying in millions of units. How old is this model, not even a year and a half if it's rtx. Dreaming stupidity of a price.

        • guess you're right.
but anything with a graphics card especially a gtx 20xx series the mark up is huge. Not sure how much it cost them though

      • RRP is a recommendation, G7's generally sit around $2400 and go on special to around $2000 (How much I picked up my last one from JB HiFi) That said $1449 is a pretty good price as its nearly 40% off.

  • +7

FYI, the new intel 9 series with the same RTX is around 1900 on dell, which buying old gen saves you 450 dollars which is a good deal but just to give everyone a reference price

  • +3

144Hz screen replacements are available on eBay for around $280.

    • link?

    • Bye bye warranty

      • +1

Not really, if anything fails just put the original one back in
Just don’t tamper with the stickers and you’ll be fine, unless they put a sticker on the screws then you’re f Ed

  • 144hz screen with these specs won't be priced at 1.5k. Please be more realistic before nitpicking.

    • This isn't a 1.5k laptop though, title quotes the RRP at $3299. You think it's unrealistic to get a 120/144hz screen in a $3k laptop?

      • +1

This deal is 1.5k, so comments are made accordingly. RRP is irrelevant, unless you want to nitpick the RRP.

  • +4

Interesting that there is/was only 7 in stock, but it has +60 votes and 1000 clicks. Is everyone just jumping on a gaming laptop voting bandwagon?

    • +3

I don't only upvote things I buy. I upvote as a means of sharing my opinion - "good deal".

I doubt there are thousands, even hundreds of OZBers looking to buy a gaming laptop at the moment in time. So that 7 is enough.

  • +1

7 available and that many upvotes? Like it's a good deal and all but that's like my local milkbar putting 7 units for a bargain. Ain't really FP worthy

    • Well considering it's been an hour and a half and there are still 3 available, I would say it's good enough

  • +1

Great specs on a laptop at this price, I would say these are the biggest drawbacks though.

-Weighs 3.14kg which I would really only recommend as a desktop replacement as this would NOT be something you'd want to be moving on a regular basis, let alone carrying outdoors.

-60Hz monitor, higher spec model has 144hz monitor if you're a die-hard gamer, not much use other than that I feel

-1 year warranty is not long, not sure if it can be extended???

    • only recommend as a desktop replacement as this would NOT be something you'd want to be moving on a regular basis, let alone carrying outdoors.

It's a 17" laptop so even if it weighed a little bit less it'd still be desktop replacement class and not something you want to be moving around a lot

  • Seems to be back in stock

It back up guys on guys, just got one :)

    • did you get the last one? 3 more were added, had one in my cart for 5 minutes, i go to the checkout stage and when i press pay now, i get "item is out of stock". sigh.

      • yea I rush and paid then posted it - sorry

I am still rocking 7980 + i5 4970 so this will be amazing upgrade :)

        • They added another 3 so managed to get the last one :)
I hope i would be able to play the latest games on this laptop, doesn't have to be full res.

        • Received my laptop today. It's on the heavy size for sure, I hope the specs make up for it. The screen seems different compared to the old laptop, not sure if a good thing.

  • OOS again .. but 30 sold. May be up again later.

  • that "PSLEIGH" discount code didn't work for me …. anybody had success ?
