$20 Add-On for Optus Prepaid Plans: 10GB (14 Day) of Roaming Data for Use in HK, Indonesia, Japan, M'sia, S'pore, NZ & More

2870

Optus recently improved their pre-paid roaming and it seems to best almost all of the travel sim options going around, especially for convenience and country coverage. Buying multiple packs would net you a fair chunk of data too ($40 for 20gb for instance). The only caveat would be that you need to activate it in Aus first.

$20 Data Roaming
Up to $210 credit to use on data. At $0.02/MB that gives you 10GB

Available plan:
Prepaid Epic Data, Prepaid Epic Value, My Prepaid Ultra, My Prepaid Ultra Plus, My Prepaid Ultimate, Prepaid Ultimate Plus, My Prepaid Long Expiry, Optus Prepaid Long Expiry.

Available Destinations:
Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, UK and USA.

Expiry:
14 days

  • Damn, could have really used that when I was just in Japan for the World Cup.

  • any coverage in the middle of the ocean between Singapore and Darwin 😜

  • I'm going to Thailand soon, then China, so I have already checked around to see what's available to me for data.
what I was going to do, was to pick up a tourist sim at the airport. Thailand tourist plans starts from about $10 (199 baht) for unlimited data for 7 days, China plans start from $0.20 (1 yuan) per GB…
So, this Optus roaming sounds great! I slightly favour local sims when I travel, but otherwise the costs are quite comparable!

    • If you need to use Google service like gmail and Google map. Local sim won't connect you. Optus roaming is fine.

  • Has anyone tried this yet?

Does the $30 starter pack with included credit allow you to recharge the $10 plan plus this $20 roaming pack?

Or are we better off buying a $2 sim and buying these separately?

    • Nope you can't use the included my credit to buy this pack. You can use extra's credit but only when activated on the Epic Data plans

$30 recharge comes with $5 extra credit
$40 recharge comes with $10 extra credit
$50 recharge comes with $15 extra credit

You can't split payment's so you need to purchase more extra credit ($10 or $20 to add extras credit) or purchase using credit card. Unless you're going to actually use the Australian inclusions provided by the epic data plans then you'd be better to just add $10 on the long expiry plan.

I've got a sim with no credit on the long expiry plan and it allows me to add a roaming data pack however as Optus have the requirement of loading at least $10 to activate a sim then the minimum cost is $10 (for the activation) + $20 (via credit card for the roaming pack).

They've got a $10 sim starter kit (which sometimes sells for $5 [like right now at some officeworks] and I've once got one for $1) which would reduce the minimum cost by $5-9.
      https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-10-v…

  • Mm. If we present the information as:

Step 1: buy $2 SIM card
Step 2: top up $30 via debit/credit card
Step 3: $10 for that 186 days long expiry
    Step 4: $20 for the roaming…

Did I get it right? Any cheaper methods around?

    • +1

See the comment by @allmightyg above. You should only need a $2 Sim (can be obtained free), plus $20 via cc/etc at activation.

      • Where can you get free $2 sim?

        • See comment by @allmightyg near the beginning of this thread. Or you could just google "free optus sim".

  • edit: nvm just realised it's for travellers IN Australia.

    • If I read it right, this Sim is for visitors to Australia, providing calls/text/data for use in Australia only, while the one in the OP is for Australians roaming the world.

$2 SIM + $20 roaming data add-on during the activation process.

    • thanks.

Can someone please confirm the best method to get this deal? Can i buy a $2 sim and just buy $20 roaming data add on and that is it or do i have to recharge first for minimum $10, then buy this $20 roaming data add on.

  • Is this data only? How would I go about making calls to say, local businesses overseas? Is the $10 travel credit the best addon to take?

  • -1

    No Canada?! :(

    • +3

If it includes Canada, it will be too good to be true. Canada has one of the most expensive phone plan in the developed countries. The big 3 carriers in Canada are currently charging $75/month + tax for 10GB, while I used to pay $55 + tax for 1GB only in Canada couple years ago.

      • One little known loophole about North America is that SIMs bought in any of the three NAFTA countries (USA/Canada/Mexico) work in any of the three jurisdictions with no roaming charges. This means a $10 SIM bought in Mexico will have you covered with the same amount of data at a fraction of the price you've quoted.

        • Ermm don't know why I'm being negged, but, in case it wasn't clear enough - one way to avoid high charges in Canada is to get a SIM for USA or Mexico (the former being easier, the latter being far cheaper).

        • That's an awesome hack (assuming true).

Am curious as to why you got negged… are you wrong? LOL.

      • I checked this out on the Canadian Whistleout site. WTF!?! on their mobile phone plans!!

        • +1

FYI: Their additional data charge is ridiculous as well. $10 for 100MB. That's even worse than living in a third world country.

  • i just realised that this $20 pack is specifically for roaming in those countries. Not for use in Australia!

i was trying to test if my newly-activated SIM + $20 roaming would work in AU before my 0530am flight tomorrow… nope!

    • Did it work ok in your destination country?

      • +2

yes, it worked perfectly once my flight landed in singapore. no worries at all. just set the phone to connect to the service provider automatically.

  • Hey guys I’m a bit confused with this offer.
To do this i would have to:

Buy a $2 SIM card, then purchase the $20 add on?
Do I have to buy a pre paid plan, or can I just use the sim for roaming?

  • +9

This is the best way I have found to be working

Order a free sim card from Optus website here (https://offer.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid-mobile-broadband/sim…)

Activate and recharge using this plan (https://imgur.com/a/KyO5YlM)

    $20 Total cost.

    • So you dont have to recharge into a long expiry plan first? Just the $20 add on?

      • No you do not! Just select that recharge :)

        • +3

Thanks heaps. Going OS tmr and saved another $10 not having to do long expiry. Can confirm works.

          • +1

            @aant22: Did it work oversea's?

            • @wortho: Sorry mate for the late reply - don't know how I missed the notification to your post. Yes it definitely worked O/S (USA) but I had to manually lock it to AT&T. Although it would sometimes lock to T-Mobile 3G, it would've been quicker to fly a pigeon to get the information (in case you are off to the states).

    • Does the 14 day period start from the day of activation ?

      • Yes!

    • +2

Looks like this is the wrong SIM. The mobile broadband SIM linked above cannot be activated on the Epic Data plan. The free sim you want is: https://offer.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/sim-card/2-sim

      • Read this comment way too late… oh well… vending machine sim it is.

      • +1

The other sim type does work, you just need to chat with an optus rep online to activate it first.

        • Thanks! This worked for me!

    • The Epic data prepaid $20 only last 10 days according to this https://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile/prepaid/plans?SID=con:p… is this the same thing?

    • Don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I can't seem to activate that deal when i I activate my sim card

    • Just be warned. I pressed the "$20 Data Roaming Only Optus Prepaid Epic Data" and it activated me on the regular $20 Optus Prepaid Epic Data.

Instead of 10GB/14 days of roaming data, I got given 12GB of Australian domestic data over 10 days. This is not the button I clicked at all!

I went through the activation screen again with another new SIM and it does the same thing.

Press roaming plan -> site gives you the domestic plan.

Just to see what would happen I also pressed the domestic plan and it gives you the domestic plan…

  • Has anyone tried activating the roaming pack once overseas? Already have an elgible Optus plan but want to delay the start period by a couple of days after landing.

    • +5

Yes. Did it in the USA.

  • Anyone know which free SIM to use? Is it the "$2 Prepaid Mobile Broadband SIM Starter Kit" or just the "$2 Prepaid SIM"? Thanks.

  • Excellent! I can use this for my upcoming trips! Saved me the hassle of having to find a local SIM card.

  • I recently got a local sim in Spain. Waaaaay cheaper than any roaming or travel sim deal. I left my Aussie sim in an old phone for my wife to answer the business calls, and only the select few knew my travel number. Made for a nice enjoyable holiday and my wife only relayed the big issues.

    • +1

Now that's a real holiday, holiday away from the wife!

  • +1

I used optus roaming at Japan for 14 days and it's awesome. I will use it again next time when I travel overseas. This is cheaper than starhub prepaid sim roaming for me.

    • Sorry for the random question, but did you activate it over there or before you went?

      • Yes you have to activate the sim card in Australia first then recharge with $20 before get on the plane.

        • Thanks!

  • Too easy.
Signed up with the epic data pack . Paid $20 .
Now have 14days and $210 roaming data credit

  • Just to clarify, has anyone successfully combined the $10 included extras credit with a $10 recharge to use for international roaming? I am being told by their live chat this cannot be done and you must select their $20 data roaming add-on.

Edit: this is referring to a $40 starter pack with included $10 extras credit

  • Can this be used in Taiwan?

  • just following the process to activate the sim, i feel as though I can do it while overseas.. has anyone activated onto Optus Prepaid Epic Data while overseas?

    • You have to activiate it locally first.

  • been following this thread, and noted that people and post are saying you need to activate the service in australia first? Just curious where are people getting this info from, i tried communicating with optus chat which informed me that you are able to activate the sim while overseas.

    • +1

Its mentioned on the roaming website under What is the $20 Data Roaming add on?

New customers can now activate a $2 SIM via optus.com.au/activate and choose the $20 Data Roaming option in the activation journey. The $20 roaming option will only be available for activation on the Optus Prepaid Epic Data. All SIM activations must occur within Australia.

While it could be technically possible the sim can be activated overseas (I imagine its handy for post paid business customers who may have lost their sim while overseas), it seems like a bit of a risk. Since this deal is long running, I'll edit the post if I hear of any success of people activating a fresh sim overseas.

      • Thanks for pointing out where the info was as it was not listed in the critical information summary which i read. Well this is confusing then between information given by optus chat and what's listed on website.

  • thanks for this. heading to bali and just rechaged twice to get $420 (20gb) ovr 28 days. Hopefully it works when i get there!

  • +2

    Can confirm it works.

Get free sim online, activate it in oz, by selecting epic data and $20 data roaming. All up I paid $20 only.

  • So can I activate on the epic prepaid data plan first and then apply the $20 roaming add-on at a later date (when I travel o/s)? Or does the activation and $20 recharge have to be performed at the same time?

    • You can, but you will be paying for the epic prepaid data plan as well.

If you only want to pay the $20, you can activate just the roaming without having to pair it with any plan. I'm pretty sure the time starts ticking as soon as you buy it though.

  • Going to NZ in December for about 2 weeks. Here's hoping this deal is still active around then.

  • +1

Just ordered the sim. Going to Japan in May.

  • +1

Did this for my 2 week trip to japan which I just came back from. Can confirm it works perfectly. I ordered 2 free sims online (one for me, one for my partner). Note: do this well in advanced because it took about 1 week and a half for them to show up.

Activated them the day before we left and put $20 travel credit choosing the epic plan on each. Got to japan, worked straight away. After 13 and a half days I had only used 6.8gb out of the 10gb. I used my phone a lot to search things and book things, but I had pre downloaded offline maps just in case. Great for $40 for two people considered I was looking at travel sims and they were way more expensive for less data.

  • Would this work with the $1 a day plan? Pay for 1 day then roam?

    • +1

Looks like it does but you might have to pay the $1 for each day too.

Better to get a $2 sim card and just activate the plan the day you board the plane, I did this recently on a trip.

  • Hopefully this deal is around until September, Does anyone know what carriers optus roams onto in New Zealand?

  • +1

Now there is a better way to do this deal.
You can get a free 7-day trial eSIM, and this add-on. Only cost $20 including sim and you can do this on the day of travel. Activation completes usually in minutes.
    https://www.optus.com.au/prepaid/plans/flex?&ca_chid=2003037…

    • If I buy the 7 day free Sim trial and the 14 day data roaming add on, do I need to pay for the additional 7 days, beyond the free trial period to continue to use my add on for the full 14 days?

  • Does anyone know if I can use this on a data-only optus sim?

  • Can anyone comment on the speeds you get now? This thread mentions speeds being really poor on this Optus roaming plan.

    • +1

Can confirm speeds were really poor when I used this in Hawaii just last week.
