Qantas Premier Platinum MasterCard, $199 Annual Fee, 120k Qantas Points (Min Spend $1500/Month for 6 Months)

1271

This deal has been extended, and, IMO, it's an underrated one - provided you can manage your affairs to get the minimum spend.

  • 20k Qantas points each month you reach the $1500 minimum spend, for six months.
  • Reduced annual fee of $199 (normally $299).
  • 2 x digital lounge passes - which can fetch $90 on Gumtree, offsetting some of the annual fee.

Aside from the above, the card earns 1 points per dollar for the first $10k per month, which is a very good earn rate post the RBA changes of a few years ago.

While the question of eligible purchases always pops up with minimum spend (and the answer varies between products), the answer is clear here:
Eligible purchases do not include; Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Refunds, Chargebacks and Special Promotions.

So your council rates, water bill, rego etc. will all count toward the $1500 (even if they aren't eligible for normal points earn).

Also note that next month will begin the Qantas Points Club, which will give benefits to anybody earning over 150k points per year - this deal alone will get you 80% of the way there.

Ouch $9k spend, that could be 3x $3k spend CCs. You have your trade-offs though

    • +1

Not just the spend amount but the spend period. Longer period you have to keep a track of it. Longer period to wait for your points, and therefore longer period between when you can potentially open your next card after the exclusion period is over. Plus the annual fees creeping up (not limited to this card only though) makes it a little less appealing. However 120k points is a decent chunk if you have no other deals going on.

      • Switch over some of your standard direct debits to the card for 6-12 months.

Surely entertainment subs, childcare (if applicable), utilities, gym memberships and general discretionary spending would get you there per month?

        • +2

I'm not saying the spend is hard to get to. I'm saying keeping track of it to ensure you've hit it is a small administrative burden.

          • +4

@spiff: You're completely right…in fact I'm in the process of putting together a spreadsheet to ensure I make it there each month.

Still, $199 for 120k points and two lounge passes is a deal worth putting in a couple of hours leg work.

          • +1

@spiff: Could be a completely different situation for us compared to yourself.

Our childcare, phone plans and ISP monthly bills equate to more than $1500, let alone other subs for entertainment, gym etc.

But it is a little bit of work in changing some of the direct debits where you can’t do it online.

            • @sghetti: I don't think I am speaking about a unique situation though. Again I'm not talking about the $ value of the spend that's hard to achieve. I'm laying out the cons of having an extended period of spend requirements. Not even saying it's a major hassle, and would have jumped on this deal if I wasn't in the 12 month exclusion period.

Not speaking for this card only, but in general the new card might not have the best incremental point per dollar earning rate so I may not want to use the card more than I have to. I might also have a few offers going on at the same time so I'll have to ensure I hit all targets in the month. So even though the spend target is very easy to hit, I need to login a few times to check how much is spent so I can re-direct my spending to other cards.

              • @spiff: What's the 12 month exclusion period?

            • +1

@sghetti: You don’t need to cancel any direct debit just pay the amount for that month and the direct debit won’t be taken out.

What are the benefits of Qantas Point Club?

    • +1

Not yet announced…it sounds like lounge passes at a minimum, which, while not huge, is something extra in addition to the benefits of this offer you're very likely to get.

      • Rewarding our top points earners on the ground
In an Australian first, Qantas Frequent Flyer will recognise its members who earn lots of points through non-flying related activities. The new Points Club will include two levels with entry gained based on a member passing an annual points-earned criteria. For the first time, members will be able to unlock flight and travel benefits – including lounge access and bonus status credits – as well as member-exclusive offers and discounts across Qantas Frequent Flyer through their everyday points earn.
        Coming in 2020.

So currently anywhere from a 2 - 13 month wait.
        Can’t wait 😊

        • Yeah, they mentioned in June they'd be providing the full detail in December, so I'm guessing (hoping) they'll be kicking off the program on Jan 1…just hoping the 12 month window will go back from day 1, so you don't have to start afresh.

        • “Non-flying activity”?

This kind of thing infuriated me when I was a frequent flyer.

I’d be flying from Sydney to San Francisco return 6-10 times per year on United, get to Platinum status easily, but I never once got upgraded. Instead, the people with huge amounts of points accrued from credit cards got upgraded instead.

Airline points should be reserved for people who actually fly a lot, as a nice bonus when they’re forced to take yet another 16 hour flight two weeks after the last one, instead of for irregular flyers who just have an airline credit card.

    • +10

Ah the Points Club… where members sit and debate what was the point. In the meantime I anxiously await my enrolment to this unannounced club!

  • How about this deal though? the fee is higher for sure but you have the credit to travel exactly the same amount per year plus more lounge entries and travel insurance.
We are still thinking which card to choose at the moment so would help if others can chip in their opinion as well:

The AMEX deal is a good one if you aren't on a current AMEX or waiting out the 18m. Signed the wife up to this the other month, now just holding it for shop small. Made another Ozbers day with a referral I hope :P

      • I'm on a current Amex (Explorer) that I'm about to cancel. Is there a cooling off period before I can sign up to this Qantas Amex?

        • No cooling off period to apply for the card itself. But to be eligible for the bonus points you need to wait 18 months.

      • Does anyone know if the 18mth exclusion applies to DJ AMEX too?

DJ AMEX used to be excluded from the 18mth waiting period, but now it says AMEX Australia issued cards and looking at the credit report DJ AMEX falls under AMEX Australia?

    • It's an easier spend to make, but yes, the fee is high - a better deal if you will definitely use the voucher (and are eligible for an Amex bonus).

    • Yeah that's a better deal if you can utilise the travel credit.

Why wouldn't take 100000 Qantas points for just $49

    https://www1.citibank.com.au/credit-cards/citi-signatureqde

    • +7

      A number of reasons:
      - Minimum $15k credit limit (if you've already got a mortgage etc) vs $6k on this card.
      - 2 Qantas passes which can effectively reduce the fee to about $100.
      - 20k more bonus points, and a much better earn rate on the actual spend.
      - Citibank vs Qantas Money. While Citi do the underwriting and the like, the application processes themselves are vastly different. No convoluted process with mixed messages, just apply, upload one payslip, then get approval in a day or two.
      - A large cohort of Ozbargainers still have one Citibank Signature free for life, courtesy of a deal back in 2013. It's unclear that we'll be offered a second Signature card.

      • Re your last point, was told by an online rep that existing signature holders are still eligible for this deal, and I can't find anything from the Qantas deal's T&c to the contrary.

        • You can definitely have Qantas and Citi cards simultaneously. I was referring to why it may not be possible to have two Citi Signatures at once, which is why this deal is better for many of us here.

          • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: I have the Qantas Premier for 120k points and the Citibank for 100k points right now and no issues, plus i closed the citibank virgin money card about 6 months ago.

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: sorry, I meant the citibank rep told me that you can still apply for the citibank signature qantas while still having your signature (free for life).

      • Why not have 🌮 ?
Edit: oh, the 6 month Citibank issued card rule
Edit-Edit: I’m supposed to inform you of something

    • +3

Surprisingly hard application process, it took them 2 payslips, 2 tax returns and a call to my employer to make sure I didn't falsify my income…

      • When did you apply Shiq1? JohnHowardsEyebrows above says only needed one payslip?

        • +1

I think thats for this qantas card.

Both offers were active when I applied about 6 weeks ago, decided to go with Citi Sig as less commitment time but I had to call at least 4 times to chase the application for approval.

    • +2

If I remember correctly, that card was on here not long ago and not a lot of people got approved.

I have a high credit score but was declined on the spot.

    • Just got approved with citibank signature qantas, and i do have an existing citibank signature. Now just need to jump through some hoops for the bonus qff points.

  • +6

$50 for each additional card holder is a bit poo though.

    • +6

And it doesn't support Apple or Android pay.

      • Crikey ..that is a good nugget of information …thanks for that @jackx

      • Dammmmmnn…I was about to apply too. But does it support GPay? (Not sure if that's different to Android pay).

        • AndroidPay has rebranded to Google Pay last year

  • This isn't a deal for me at moment, but actually it raises some good points where you just load your daily living expenses onto the credit card. Just gotta remind yourself to pay it all off within the interest free period , so that you never pay interest.

So I guess if you had a good chunk in a savings account where your work pay gets deposited, and then transfer amounts over every 30 days. Bingo, earn (rough guess) - upwards of 200K Qantas Points a year?

    • +1

for one year, then considerably less from there on.

      • Good point. Forgot that you can't apply for banks other credit cards after you've had some. Or whatnot.

Plus factor in annual card fees too. Dunno but it's something to think about I guess

  • If I already have the citibank signature (about 1 month in), will i still get the bonus points or because its underwriten by citibank I won't be eligible?

  • +2

Provided by Citibank, careful if you have had a citibank card, they will most likely reject you.

    • Nah, I have a Citi Signature (have had it for years), and just approved for this one. The only issue with Citi is the multiple applications in 3 or 6 month rule.

      • So I cant apply this card if im only less than 6 months with my citibank sig card then? Thanks for the inside info

        • Not 100% sure if it's 3 or 6 months.

          • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: What if I got declined for the citi card? Worth applying for this one or no chance?

            • +1

@Bytelover: Depends when you applied. May be an idea to call and check the timeframe.

              • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: It is 6 months with Citi, however if you are a serial switcher then don't apply.

                • @nadan: Interesting…sounds like they're finally started considering commercial risks (as opposed to just credit risks).

                  • +1

@JohnHowardsEyebrows: Either that, or they have realized that with serial switchers they are losing money and no point in approving them. Given how automated and quick the decline is.

    • I’ve had a Coles MasterCard for a few years now. Will that exclude me from getting this card?

      • No

      • -1

The old Coles mastercard shows up on my Credit Savvy account as a Latitude Finance Credit card the latest coles is a Citibank one I think. Is Latitude=Shitty bank?

      • I have a Coles MasterCard as well.

    • Yeh I'd be keen to take this up - but defo needs a bonus points promo ;-)

  • I assume there are rules about what you can spend it on? ie Can I put my tax bill and mortgage through the card?

  • Apple Pay?

Both my wife and I got rejected for the card. I had a citibank card but my wife didn't have one, but she still got rejected.

    • +1

      thanks for sharing.

i've got a citi debit card as well, wondering if that would be an issue.

my understanding is, credit card application, given that the applicant has a good credit record, can be rejected if multiple credit inquiries have been recorded recently or not having a 'stable' income.

    • +1

Rejected as well, no Citibank card. *shrug

      • +1

Made me wonder if anyone has got approved

  • Does anyone know if payment to the ATO count towards the spend requirement?

I know it says “ Eligible purchases do not include; Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Refunds, Chargebacks and Special Promotions.” but some banks also specifically mentions no ATO payments…

  • +1

So far , decline/rejection count from comments is about 8 people on here so please be careful with this one everybody.

Citi credit card posts are "… have credit rating of 875 & three times the minimum income got declined" … they don't want people who can pay their credit card bills on time . Citi's sweet spot customer is someone who is half functional but not functional enough to have a high credit rating.

    • +1

Thanks Doctor. I am interested to apply but hate to be "Rejected"…
      Thanks for the heads-up

  • Anyone know if it's the same minimum spend before the offer extension? I applied this card on 31/10/19 and approved now. Just want to make sure if my minimum spend is $1500 as well.

    • Same

      • Thank you!

    • lol, how many times of the minimum requirement do you earn to get approved? You seem to be the first one who is successful in this thred.

      • +1

I am actually a low income earner compare to most of the people here. I put 60K annual income in the application.

        • Thanks mate!

  • Seems to be a lack of deals compared to last year, from memory I've gone through the following since last September:

Amex / Qantas dual card deal
    St George
    Westpac
    Citi Bank

Waiting on another one outside of my waiting limits to get some more juicy points..!

  • Just be careful if you are self funding. I’ve got appreciable money in the banks, shares, own my own home and have a very good amount in super. I also met the income requirements based on income from my shares and interest, but they still knocked me back on this card. I queried it but still got knocked back. They refused to tell exactly what the issue was, but I can only assume it was because I don’t have an actual ongoing job. It can’t be based on ability to repay as I have enough, just in my bank accounts, to meet the income requirement for the next ten years. A person could lose their job at any time but substantial assets came to nothing. very frustrating but it saved me the fee.

    • Presumably your credit rating is also top notch with how diligent you are at saving?

      • I’m going to check that out now to see if they’ve trashed it but our only ongoing debt is a credit card we pay off every month. The house was paid off in 2001. There can’t be anything that should be a concern. What really annoyed me is they refused to, actually, tell me why we were knocked back. I realise it is “their card” but how can I clarify the issue if I don’t know what it is. It means I don’t feel I can apply for any card from now on, which is a concern. I wanted to live on my savings until I’m 65 to maximise my super but I’m reconsidering so I have a regular “income”.

    • No income = No credit

      • I have income from my shares and bank accounts. What I don’t have is an employer.

  • +2

Approved one day after application, hassle free application, good credit score with 2 active low limit cards.
