  • Awesome find! Thanks TA!

  • Thanks, just signed up for $1

  • +3

Got the $1 notice on ebay's front page.
Signed up, and before payment, I saw the message -
"You have already tested eBay Plus for free. If you sign up now, the annual membership fee is due immediately."

As it also said twice I am getting ebay plus for $1, I just paid.

The membership went through. As I had only $2 in the debit card I assume I get 12m anyway.
Just checked the bank and no money was withdrawn from debit card, yet ebay plus membership is active to Oct 10 2020.

I figured this may be useful to share.

    • +1

Did you use paypal? If so it usually takes a while for them to deduct the payment. I just did the same thing, fingers crossed won't be cancelled a while later like what happened to some.

  • Thanks TA. Finally a price I can justify accepting :)

I wonder - can I simply delete the Paypal payment agreement to avoid it extending automatically?

P.S. in terms of eligibility, I did not get the email (never get any from eBay), never signed up for a trial, am long-term member and medium spender on eBay.

    • +1

You can cancel in the ebay plus section of ebay. It will keep your subscription active until 2020 but will not automatically renew (unless you accept their $20 gift card offer when trying to cancel). I literally just signed up for this deal then cancelled straight away. End date is still 2020.

      • I did the same thing and just received an email from ebay saying my payment method failed and my ebay plus has been removed. There is no reason why my $1 PayPal payment would have failed. Seems dodgy

        • My $1 payment failed (still in bank), I am trying not cancelling membership to see if they leave my ebay plus intact. Ebay Plus still shows active in my account after two days.

      • Thanks, that worked. Payment had gone through already.

  • Got it. Thanks!

  • Can you cancel an existing 3-month trial to become eligible or does the membership have to be expired?

  • Thank you TA. If any one does not get an invite, just log into ebay and select plus (for existing ebay users). I have opted to join like that and had to pay only $1 for a year.

    • +3

Did the eBay Plus page shown that you had to Pay $1 or it was still showing $49 till the final checkout where the final amount was later reduced to $1?

      • ^ yep that’s what I’d like to know as well as mine is showing $49 p.a on both accounts.

  • I got this deal and have previously had a 3 month trial about 6-8 months ago.

    • Me too. See above as I signed up anyway for $1, and it worked. My account shows 12m ebay plus is active.

  • 10+ years on eBay, and don't get a single offer!

It says $39 for me tho, which might be ok if I got offered the $20 gift card making it $19.

It's so ridiculous to offer members $1, and others nothing. Such bad practice, good way to annoy customers.

I tried going through payment system, but unsure how far forward to go, before it charges you! I got up to Sign me up and just closed the window 😂

    • +1

they know they own you :)

    • I believe if you see this you're good to go

"To join eBay Plus, you need to provide a payment method. eBay Plus normally costs AU $49.00 per year, but by joining now, you'll pay just AU $1.00 for your first year. Your membership will be automatically renewed each year, unless you've cancelled it."

  • +2

    Completely unrelated and unpopular opinion:

If you scroll down on the https://www.ebay.com.au/ebayplus/home page, the guy with the dog looks very similar to same guy with a dog from the eharmony TV ad (https://youtu.be/Thg_z49M-kY?t=12).

  • +1

Awesome, worked for me. Thanks for the heads up TA!!!

  • No joy here. Signed up for the 1 month trial which expired in mid September but did not renew annual membership and plus sign up still showing $49 fee.

Not enough of a draw at full price to sign up again…

  • Thanks TA just signed up.

  • +1

    Anyone else received this email?

"Unfortunately, the payment for your eBay Plus subscription was declined. Please contact your bank for more information regarding the cause of the decline.

As we didn’t receive the payment, we have cancelled your eBay Plus membership. If you want to continue to be a member of eBay Plus, you can sign up again."

    • +1

Yep I just received the same email. Very suss!

      • How can it be declined when I paid by Paypal…
They mucked this up and starting cancelling the subscription.

        • +1

I paid with PayPal also. No way the $1 fee could have failed. Seems like a scam to get people to sign up and then when they go to cancel offer $20 for extension.

          • @sendcoupons: The funny thing is, when I went back to my ebay, I can still see the banner 'unlock ebay plus for $1'

            • +1

@kolorijo: Same here but when I went to do the process again it has a blue exclamation mark saying “you have already tested ebay plus and will be charged $49” but every where else on the page says $1. I’m on the phone to them now.

    • +1

I paid via CC not paypal - no email to say no payment as yet, but no charge on my card yet either.

Edit: No email received, but Ebay now says I am not ebay plus and need to pay $49 ..

      • +1

I am predicting angry backlash from lots of people today… I have revoke my +1 on this deal due to the incompetency of ebay.

        • +3

It seems dodgy. Like, get everyone baited with $1 and the people who try to cancel the auto renew magically get bank declined and loose ebay plus. What a headache they’ve caused their own phone and chat support plus customers.

    • +1

Yeah, I just got this email from them also.

    • +2

did you cancel before the $1 payment went through? I can see why that would cause a problem. The system must flag the account to stop charging plus fees so it rejects processing the $1.

  • Yeah, wasn't targeted, but had also never used the free trial. Signed up and immediately cancelled, but then they offered $20 if I stayed… So I'll stay a lil while.

  • Thanks. Worked for me but not three others at work. Sucks to be them

  • Got it !!

  • Got it via ebay app. Just go to ebay plus and was offered the $1 ebay plus. Thanks OP!

  • I got the $1 email and a banner message on the ebay front page with the $1 offer. I joined plus, it didn't charge my paypal account anything. So it was free for me.

    • charge will come later.

    • Same here. No charge on PayPal. Now I have to keep an eye on it until the charge comes through to ensure I wasn't charged full amount. How annoying.

  • +1

OK - like someone else here also said, I signed up for this, it accepted, and then 30 mins later get an email saying the payment was declined from my paypal - which is strange since in the 10 odd years I have used paypal have never had an issue. So the subscription got cancelled.

Not that I care that much, ebay Plus is pretty useless overall (which is probably why they are trying to get people to join with an offer like this).

    • Did you cancel the auto renew?

    • +1

what did you do in the 30 mins duration between signing up and getting payment was declined?

      did you cancel the agreement?

      • Just re-did it and waited till it charged before cancelling - this time, I didn't get the rejection ;)

  • Thanks! Worked for me. Trialled eBay plus when it was first released but haven't signed up again until this offer

  • No debits on my PayPal yet. But by the looks of recent comments might get a cancellation email soon. Another reason to hate eBay!

    • it came through on paypal about an hour later…"eBay Marketplaces GmbH $0.99"

  • Putting my tin foil hat on but does these free returns hurt these types of sellers?

  • Missed the previous ones but finally got it this time, thanks!

  • now we're talking…

  • Mine still says $49.
"To start a free trial, you need to provide a payment method. eBay Plus costs AU $49.00 per year after the free trial period. Your membership will automatically continue after the trial period, unless you've cancelled it."

  • Doesn't work . What should i do?

    • +7

      Call the cops

      • Make sure it's not Hong Kong cops.
Coz they can not do shits.
Get Yankee cops and they can fire up real bullets!!!!

    • Call Jeff Bezos!

  • Can anyone please upload a screenshot of the email offer? It's only appearing on myEbay for me and clicking that prompts with an error :( Thank you so much

  • +1

I received the email and signed up. I hate auto renewals, especially annual ones, so was going to cancel straight away. At that stage nothing had been charged to Paypal so I decided best not to cancel until everything was confirmed, including payment. A couple of hours later received a confirmation of payment $0.99 from Paypal.
Just posting for info…in case cancelling early triggers payment declined email.

    • +3

Yeah I just signed up again and will wait till the payment comes through before cancelling this time.

    • Yes, as indicated by the previous comments this is what has been happening.

    • yes that is the only logical reason of getting cancelled.

  • Just received this email

"The payment for your eBay Plus subscription fee was declined"

    I paid with paypal..

  • I signed up a week ago for $39, but thankfully eBay was happy to cancel and refund it. Signed up for $1 straight after. Very happy!

    • That's nice of them.

  • +6

i can understand why so many of your subscription fees were declined. its because you guys cancelled the service agreement before getting charged.

dont do anything before they charge you!

    • Right on, brother!

  • Thanks TA! subscribed even though it said I've previously done the trial :)

  • Still seeing $49 = (

  • For those who never joined in the first place (like me) the only offer I see is a free 30 day trial then $49 for the first year.

  • Saying $39 for me :(

Will wait for a better deal.

    • same… Best $39 I've never spent! & I'm saving more not buying microSD cards.

  • Thanks ta.
Had eBay plus up until a month or 2 ago and didn't resub(at 49 bucks, who would…)

At $0.99c I can justify another year :)

  • +2

Nice. I never received the email, but when I went to ebay.com.au, there was a banner ad for the $1 ebay plus deal.

    I signed up.

  • Got an error on payment. Checked ebay plus saying joined in today. No charge on my paypal account.

    Edit: nvm read above comments

  • I’m never lucky

    • Did you check the ebay homepage? I didn't get an email but it did show on the front page in the scrolling banner.

  • Didn't work for me :/ Nevertheless still an awesome deal !

  • +1

    Ta, TA!

Got it for $1. I never had Ebay Plus/trial before and I didn't bother to check for the targeted email. Clicked the Join Ebay Plus which was indicating $49. Once inside the page it changed to $1.

Wife used the Ebay Plus trial a few months ago. Didn't get the offer.

I am not cancelling instantly. I mean I don't understand why some people can't just wait a few hours, a few days or even a few months.

  • worked for me. Was also able to redeem the $20voucher by cancelling it then accepting the coupon

  • This reminded me to cancel my ebay plus on my other ebay account. I was due to get a $20 ebay gift card from this deal soon but I can cancel that now- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/471908

  • .
Did not get the $1 deal (I'd tried it ages ago), followed the tip to ignore and keep clicking……ended up $49 poorer !!!!
cancelled ……got the $20 Gift Coupon offer if I stay ……thought ….all adds up to $80 for 2 years ……so I chose to stay…..hope it's better than Amazon has been !

  • Very much a targeted deal I would have thought. I have 3 expired eplus accounts and unfortunately all still show as $49 for renewal. Interesting how random it is as my three accounts all expired during different periods and are different names, paypal accounts, addresses so non specific to myself. One day hopefully it will pop up at $1 but until then can just create new accounts and use 1 month trials whenever I require anything on ebay so not a major loss I suppose :-)

  • Awesome deal.
Shame i couldnt use any cash back on it though :(

  • +1

    3 ebay accounts.
    None have the offer :(

  • Thanks for posting. Worked for me!

  • Bah no deal for me :(

  • I don't get what the criteria is. There's people in the thread who've done the trial and even those already on the $1 year and still got the deal.

  • I tried to sign up but it says:

"Sorry, this program is currently only available for users registered on eBay.com.au and whose billing currency is Australian Dollars."

I've been using the .au site in Australian currency since for over 5 years. Even if I'm not targeted for the deal, I'm unable to to sign up for Plus whatsoever. Anyone else facing this problem?

    • +1

Your account may be still based in the country where you first registered it.
The AU currency that EBay pages default to is not an indication of what country your account is tied to.

I had this problem before when I tried to register for an eBay Plus trial.
There is no way to check or change this on your own.
You have to contact their call centre and get their support staff to change your account's base country. Should take no longer than 5 minutes to get this done.

    • +1

I received the same error. Contacted through the Live Chat & I received a call back and verified account details. A minute later, they updated the country & currency in the account & confirmed to retry.

  • Worked for me. I previously had ebay plus as part of last year’s promo where you got a $50 voucher if you signed up for eBay plus. Cancelled the auto renewal about a month ago and got the targeted email overnight. It took around 5 hours for my paypal account to be charged but the transaction has gone through now for $0.99c to eBay gmbh.

  • I wasn't targeted but $0.99 worked for me, took about half an hour for the paypal receipt to come through.

  • +1

Got the deal by clicking link and signing in. After I selected payment it said welcome to ebay plus then next page after clicking ok it took me to the ‘You have successfully changed your password’ page. Very weird.

Pretty sure I have offers turned off.

    • Same!

  • I only got 30 days free promotion. So I called to see if they could set it up for me manually, the lady said NO! it was random targeted people who got the deal and they would know via an email.

    • Hah. rude!

  • +2

And I went to signup tonight at 10:25pm, deal finished 10pm local time not 11pm as displayed :(

  • +2

Just letting you all know, I was hit with a $48.99 charge overnight (5am) on my Paypal account from eBay after responding last week and paying and being charged for the $1 deal. Chasing it with eBay now. Check your Paypal account.

    • did you receive the targeted email from ebay?
