Rubra Chantico or Jazz Coffee Beans 1kg $10 Delivered @ Rubra

1560

Never thought I would see the day when you can get beans cheaper than Aldi’s. I’ve tried their beans once (emergency run to an IGA when we ran out of beans), thought that they were only ok, but $10 for a kilo of beans is pretty hard to say no to. You get a choice of either their Chantiri or Jazz blends, not sure how long the promotion will run for but it’s supposedly only for a limited time, for new customers only. Enjoy!

Lol we posted the deal at the same time…

I wonder how rubra coffee compares to other Roasters, but at $10 per kg delivered its hard to pass up on this

    • +1

Haha, yours is far more detailed, maybe I should edit my post..:)

  • Aldi beans for $2 more a kilo is worth the risk, given Columbia is back and the new Honduras single origin has been released.

    • -2

It annoys me they don't put a roast date on there though. Also none of the bags are actually sealed. I've check through about 30 bags at 3 different stores and they all had holes where the vacuum seal is :/

      • +17

Holes? Did you mean the one-way degassing valve for CO2 to escape?

        • +4

Really? Hahaha that's embarrassing, I'm kinda new to coffee and I hadn't noticed it from other more boutiquey brands I bought before.
It's really a one way valve? I coulda swore the bags expanded again after I squeezed them, but also could have just been my imagination

          • @SKobb: That's gas from the beans yo

      • Not sure what you mean as I've been buying a kilo every month or two for years now and never seen holes or leaky seals. I am fussy and push air through valve for storage before opening to grind.

I'm sure there would be the odd one here or there with a seal leaking, but what your describing is a big faulty batch. Did you tell staff about it?

      • +3

Isn't it there so u can smell how good it is?

        • +1

It is to let the fumes out so the bag doesnt explode.

        • Oh yeah when you pick that baby up in the store. Everyone gets a nice whiff of that beautiful coffee smell.

    • Is Columbia better than Medium Roast?

    • Is Columbia in all stores? Still only seeing Peru/Brazil in mine, and I might prefer the Columbian beans. Very interested in the single origin too…

    • How does the Columbian compare to the Brazilian? Like the smooth/ toffee notes of the Brazilian, but could be a little more robust, if that makes sense.

  • +2

Just as a bit of an insight - I've been a solid drinker of Rubra for a couple of years now, this is our go to coffee, to see it at this price is a no-brainer.
Everyone has their different tastes, and I'm sure there are some out there that would prefer something different, but if you haven't tried this yet, I'd definitely recommend.

I just ordered a kilo of the Chantico. Interesting to note though, when I tried to order 3 bags, it came up with a disclaimer about it being a 1 kilo only promotional price, and then changed the order to 1 bag for me. It did however, at the Checkout Cart allow me to then increase the number past 1. I ended up just ordering the one bag anyway, but you could potentially use this backdoor method to order more, just not sure if they'd honour it.

    • Yeah Chantico is my go-to as well. They roast it about 15km from where I live. Also for the soy drinkers, this is low acid so doesn't curdle.

  • +3

I routinely purchase Chantico for $40/kg at our IGA. It's our favourite coffee.

    Thanks OP.

  • Thanks OP, ordered Chantico

  • Will give chantico a try - thanks OP!

    • +2

You mean you will give Chantico a chance? :)

  • Worth a shot, local IGA has 200gm bags of this at $12 amongst other boutique local roasters.

    • +1

A single shot or a double shot? ;)

  • Chantico is one of my favorite beans. I got my today but confused by the date, they usually have roasted date but this time 2009/20/20. Don't know how fresh as I still got half bag from blacklist left.

  • Are these arabica or robusta beans? Aldi Peru beans are arabica. I am new-ish to coffee but I heard that the more expensive arabica beans make better coffee…

edit: ignore me, it says arabica on the bag. Could be worth a shot at this price!

  • For $10 delivered I'll give it a go. Thanks OP.

  • Bought, hopefully the beans are not overburnt Starbucks type of crap.

    • Yeah the small roasters do it all the time. Tastes like ash. I've been enjoying the Costco coffee lately. Kirkland is it?

      • I went to Costco yesterday and I was not sure which beans to try out, is there a couple Kirkland options or is it just the 1?

        • Oh I don't know, my wife went there. I have Kirkland Colombian Supremo. Silver 1.36Kg bag, medium roast.

  • +1

Aldi is surprisingly good (don't know how the Vittoria beans gets away with it), but willing to give this a go!

    • -1

Agree, surprisingly good, but I do find they're dead after about 2 weeks.

      • +1

Keep them in a vacuum-sealed bag in the freezer.

        • Not sure about freezer, but at least air as possible and cool cupboard, definitely yes.

          • @ozhunter68: Freezing is fine, they’re dried out. You just need to keep moisture away, and vacuum-sealing does that.

I divide mine into hopper-sized portions, freeze them and they stay fresh for months.

        • I keep them in one of these:

          https://alternativebrewing.com.au/product/friis-ebony-silver…

I'll try freezing again now that I have a vaccuum sealer as well.

  • +1

rep says promo could end at anytime (was supposed to be end of this month)

also sent out in 1x 1kg bag, instead of 4x 250gm bags, if that makes any difference

  • Thanks OP ordered Chantico

  • They send by Fastway, if you are on the East side you could be waiting up to 10 days for delivery. Hope the beans are freshly roasted.

  • +1

Also appears to be valid for ground as well as whole beans - if you wern't interested in grinding yourself.

  • +1

Just ordered the Chantico. Wow 10 bucks delivered to Sydney is pretty awesome. Had some issues with checkout but I purged my browser history and tried again and worked fine

  • Has the deal ended? Link goes to a 404 page. Tried adding 1kg from their shop page and total is $37

    • +1

Possibly…I'll mark it as expired unless someone can let me know otherwise…

  • Aww missed it. Rubra is my go to. The beans usually come super fresh when you order direct.

  • +1

Just got in before it expired, great price so more than willing to try it!
Also grabbed some tea as well, always looking for decent alternatives to T2!

    • Any things a decent alternative to T2

  • +1

        • Thanks, ordered

  • Thank you for your order!
Here's a couple of things we'd like to bring to your attention…
Firstly, thank you very much for ordering a kilo of our Chantico or Jazz blend from our online store and becoming a part of our Rubra family. We have been humbled by the sheer amount of people taking up our great offer.

We'd like to take this opportunity to make you aware that, due to the higher than expected orders, we will be sending out very fresh coffee. To help with the flavour development, please follow these steps when you receive your order:

    1. Open the bag and let it breathe for 18 hours
    2. After 18 hours, seal the bag squeezing out any air
    3. Store the coffee in a cool, dark place

Please note, the optimal time to drink your coffee will be 7 days after the date on the bag. The date on the bag is the Best Before Date. The roast date will be the day before the best before date, of this year.
E.g. If the Best Before date is 8/10/2020 our roast date will be 7/10/2019

Our delivery times will also be affected due to the high number of orders. We will endeavour to get your order out as soon as possible and appreciate your patience.

Thank you again for purchasing from Rubra Coffee. We are here Monday to Friday 8 am - 4 pm AWST to answer any questions you have. Please feel free to reply to this email or click the button below.

    Kind Regards,

    The Rubra Team

  • Damn, I can't believe I missed this! This is bloody nice coffee

  • wow, that's great service! Ordered on 8-10-19 and delivered today via courier no less!!

  • +1

Not due for delivery until 17 October. Will need to use beans pretty quickly, would have preferred if they sent Aus Post rather than Fastway, they are too slow interstate, must be using road transport only..

    • +1

Due to arrive in Sydney on 23 October.. that's a long long time

      • +2

Yeah 11+ days for delivery in Australia is crazy.
Guess I won't need to air them out for 18 hours.

    • +1

expected delivery date 24th here. Has anyone told Rubra that their interstate courier is crazy slow? Free shipping I suppose we can't complain too much.

When I first ordered coffee beans from one of the other regular coffee roasters you see on OzB, I emailed them when the order hadn't arrived in like a week from Syd to Bris. They expressed another bag out for free, then they both arrived the next day :) Bonus coffee baby!

  • +4

Coffee was shipped on 10th of October, Fastway estimated delivery date is 21st of October. Do they use sea freight or camels ?

  • Got mine yesterday, can't read the BB date very well on the pack but it looks like 9/9/2020 so beans might be over a month old. I ordered before this deal was posted here. They make a pretty good coffee though, but expected a richer crema.

  • +1

Picked up on the 11th, delivery to Brisbane expected on the 25th. There goes the hope of trying these beans freshly roasted…. :-(

  • +1

Mine had similar delivery estimate but arrived yesterday. Although Earlier I'd read 4 days estimated delivery. Did you see an email from them saying:

"we will be sending out very fresh coffee.
The roast date will be the day before the best before date, of this year."

I can tell it is fresh but, alas i can find no best before date. Still for $10 delivered…

    • +2

Mine was estimated to be delivered on Oct 21 (Newcastle), but just arrived too.

The best before date is imprinted on the very top opening of the bag. So if you've ripped the top off to open the bag, it's probably in your bin.

  • +1

Just received mine in Syd - is everyone opening the bag to let it breathe? Wondering if its better to leave it sealed so I keep it until I finish my current big bag of coffee

    • its really full of gas so i did let it breathe today and even when i resealed the bag it puffed up very fast.

    • +1

Update, made my first shot (see photo) after have beans in the hopper for a day so had plenty of time to air and still very gassy so definitely worth leaving open.
      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/160676/73468/img_5830_…
      Still wasn't bad.

      • That's an impressive crema

        • Thanks years of obsessive compulsive coffee disorder and practise. But a lot of it is because beans have too much gas.

  • They are very gassy. Quite happy with the coffee but would have liked to know the roast date, as I suspect my batch (ordered before the deal was posted on OzB) might be September rather than October roast. I also sent them an email letting them know that shipping interstate was extremely slow, they didn't even respond. Does not exactly fill me with confidence and doubt I would order again at full price.

  • Anyone feel the coffee is a bit burnt? reminds me of badabeans during their initial specials.
The beans are very dark and oily, as well as a strong acrid burnt smell and same aftertaste.
Crema is really impressive but doesn't mean jackall if you can't drink it.

    • Which one did you order?

      • The chantico. Jazz I read is an Italian roast wouldve been much darker.

        • I am yet to try my Chantico, but will be very pissed off if the beans are overburnt.

          • @Sidor: let me know curious to see if it's just me.

    • Just opened my bag of Chantico and it has a strong burnt toast / dog food smell! Not what I expected.

Will try it tomorrow morning, but not confident.

      • let me know how you go.
I find it a bit better after airing it out for 2 days.

        • +1

Like your name, definitely a bit Charzy!

Aired out overnight. Grinded up this morning. Body was good, but the burnt taste is there. Not as strong as it smells, but you don't really want that at all. I'll give it more time. Batch date 0810

          • @tunzafun001: Yeah similar batch. Could be a bad roast, or expected to let it rest for longer

  • +1

Fastway, the worst courier in Australia. Always a big sigh and eye roll when I find out something I have bought has been sent using them.

Sorry, we are currently experiencing high volumes of parcels in our network, please allow up to a couple of extra business days for delivery.
For further information please send a parcel enquiry.

  • Received today in Brisbane. Bag is not swollen, the degassing valve seems to be doing the job. I think my hopper will be ready to receive the new beans tomorrow.

  • +1

Been following the tracking since I ordered. Long story short, it is now sitting at Dandenong depot and never got delivered to my house. I didnt even have get calling card.

I am not driving 30 mins to collect a $10 bag of coffee so I have requested for a refund.

Fastway is a really pathetic shipping company.

    • +1

Just got an email saying nobody was home and to collect at depot. My security cameras don't lie, there was no attempted delivery. Pathetic

      • hope they give you a full refund and give that courier a tongue lashing

    • Seems like they no longer have a parcel connect network and everything just gets sent back to the depot in bloody Dandenong. All the amazon parcels from the US the past week are coming via Fastway… omg.
