Agreed. Planted mine Sep 1st
the prices will drop then.
Shit I have forgotten to plant mine, looks like I will be doing that tonight! They might cop a fair bit of fertiliser to try catch up…
Just get seedlings at this point
Cheapest place for seedlings?
@Power Penguin: Small local nurseries maybe, I've even picked some up at garage sales for $1 each over the years. This year I just got mine from my local independent supermarket for $2.80 each. When you consider the time and effort to get a good seedling, $2.80 isn't that much.\
Bunnings is always there too.
@Power Penguin: Woolworths /s
Where I am tomatoes grow late for whatever reason, I planted a heap way later than this last year and got a good crop, hopefully will be alright. Gardening is more of a challenge when you plant everything late anyway, brings out the best in me.
@pdtmathieson: Who pays for tomato seeds, just cut a 1cm slice lightly cover with soil itll grow, or take a cherry tomato, squirt seeds into a trench and lightly cover. I had 90 cherry tomato plants from 2 tomatos i picked up off the ground at the servo…
@Seedy seed: I harvest all my own seeds, but I dry them out first - cut the slices as you said, but leave them out on some flyer wire and let everything else dissolve through. I wait until there is tomatoes in the fridge that haven't been used and are compost bin bound, and get enough for the next season over the winter.
@pdtmathieson: ;) a fellow gardener
Guess it depends where in Vic you are but in my experience most that are listed before the onions should do ok with a mid October planting, not sure about the last few. We have planted a number of those listed as late as November with adequate results.
Lettuce would certainly be okay. You don't have to wait for the fruit to come.
I’ve noticed the 99c ones they sell seem to have significantly less seeds compared to other brands and packets… I could be wrong but maybe people see it as ooo cheap but in fact it’s very similar in quantity per seed count
Given the increasingly long summers here in Australia, most of these should still be okay I guess.
It's too late for tomato seeds this year in VIC (and the wrong time of the year for probably most of these seeds now we're in mid spring).
