Original description

Hi all,

First deal post as I'd not seen this one come up yet.

Optus are offering the Oppo Reno 5G with bonus Bose QCII headphones (by redemption) until October 24.
They're also offering a bonus 20GB/month data on the $85/m plan until October 25th.

Poor timing for myself, as I'm not due to upgrade until the start of December, but hopefully some OzBargainers can make use of this deal.

    Minimum term
These plans are available as 36-month contract plans.

    • Can have them as 24 or 36 month terms. The 36 month offering just reduces the MRO per month due to being over a longer period.

      • Thanks. Just saw the tab for 24 months. Anyway here's the total minimum cost assuming one chooses the bonus data plan:

        24 month plan: $85 + $20 = $105/mo or $2520 in total
        36 month plan: $85 + $5 = $90/mo or $3240 in total

    • +4

36 no plans are such a joke. It should be a legal requirement that warranty = contract length.

      • It is tho…. Australian Consumer Law says a product must have a reasonable life, and if it is a 36mo contract that means a 36mo ACL warranty.

  • +10

Hold up, so Optus is offering that we pay $85 a month for a cheapo phone, with limited data, on a 36 month contract, and for that they give us a $300 headphone?

    No deal.

    • +3

The Reno is the flagship of Oppo's current product range - this isn't a $200 phone.

      • +1

Not really current. The Oppo Reno Ace with 90hz screen, Snapdragon 855+ and 65 Watt charging will out in China by next Thursday according to rumours.

        • +1

Sure, that will take the flagship title, but it isn't out yet. I have no doubt this offer is to clear excess stock.

      • You can buy a Reno 4g for less than $700. You would be better off buying Xiaomi K20 or something right - they have the same specs.

        • +2

          I don't see how that's relevant?

          • +1

@Deceiver: Total cost of this deal: $3060

Cost of sim only deal over same period: $1440.
You are paying $1660 for this phone and the headphones. The headphones are roughly $300, so you are paying roughly $1300 for the phone.

You will get more data with sim only plan too.

            • @onlinepred: This is the 5G model in the deal, not 4G

              • +1

@Deceiver: Here you can buy the phone for $1242. There will be cheaper deals very soon as it is still new.

                https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-OPPO-Reno-10x-Zoom-5G-Latest…

Overall you will get a better plan and still save money.

Transfer to telstra and you will get a $400 to put towards a $1500 phone, also cheaper.

                • +1

@onlinepred: OP @Deceiver has been deceived by OPPOration or Optusration

                • @onlinepred: Not exactly a viable solution for those like me who are locked into a contract with an upgrade option just around the corner, though - is it?

                  • @Deceiver: If you are having this problem now, it's not advised to sign up on 36 month contract. If you start from the end of your current contract on a 12 month for example, you will be more open to better deals down the road saving you more money, and offering better plans.

Upgrade options are to entice you to stay on a carrier, not save you money. The best option is to try and reduce your contract times while saving money.

                    • @onlinepred: I'm not signing up for a 36 month contract - 24 months is long enough for me.

I take the upgrade option because I'm happy with Optus as a carrier. I'm sure there's plenty more people like me too. Just because this isn't for you, it doesn't make it unsuitable for everyone else.

                      • @Deceiver: I'm purely stating that it isn't a good deal. You can buy the components separately for less and have a better plan with half the plan length.

                        • @onlinepred: And most of the time, for other phones as well, works out cheaper to buy separately than in a bundle contract. So I see where you're getting at because I do the same

                        • @onlinepred: How so? The Reno 5G is $1150 on eBay (more with the link you provided)

                          The headphones are $350

                          Therefore that’s $1500 in value

                          But you’re only paying $2400 for a 24month contract

Thus you may view this deal in two ways

                          1) it’s a 900$ plan over 24 months (2400-1500) meaning it’s $37.50 for 60gb plan which is cheap

                          Or

                          2) it’s a $65 plan(65*2400=$1560) and you’re paying $840 for a phone and a new pair of headphones - again, also cheap

Did you not work that out?

                          • @000lynx: I posted 10 days ago. It was a 36 month plan then. If you really want to pay full price for the phone and headphones, and want optus for 24 months, then this is a deal.

                            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/489595

                            • @onlinepred: It was always a 24 months plan.

In my calculation I priced the headphones at $350 despite them being full price rrp at 499 and I priced the phone at $1150 depspite the RRP being around $1400 (dicksmith have it for $1350)

So in actual fact, I didnt price anything at full value.

Therefore, this is not only a better deal when priced at full value but its also still a good deal at the lower values I used.

In summary, its either a Very good deal or its just a standard deal.

In no situation is it not a good deal as you contended 10 days ago.

                              • @000lynx: I'm just pointing out that you are 10 days late to the convo. At the time, the ebay discount brought the phone for $1242 which was the cheapest I found.

Anyway glad you find value in the plan! I went on the telstra jb deal so $55 a month (after call in discount) with 60gb plus a $500 voucher. Straight up you get better value than this deal. But who am I to say that. In a month or two the reno 5g will be much cheaper and you will save hundreds. If you need this phone and these headphones on optus right now, this is the best deal. Is it a good deal, no. This is OZB

                                • @onlinepred: Yeah…

Jbhifi have the Oppo Reno 5g for $1499 so buying it via JB with your $500 voucher would still render your idea a worse deal.

so, how aobut you sell the JB voucher for say $450 (unlikely you'll sell a voucher for its face value). Buy the Oppo for $1242, the headphones for $350 and have your $55 plan.

                                  $55 * 24 months = $1320
                                  1150 (phone) + 350 (headphones) minus $450 cash received for JB Voucher = $1050

                                  Total value of your idea costs $1320 + 1050= $ 2370

Your way means you spend $2370 assuming you get $450 for the gift card.

This deal costs $2400. There is a $30 advantage going your way + the concept that Telstra is a better network (which in my opinon it is) but assuming all other factors e.g you get the phone for $1150 which is cheap and the headphones on a OZB deal for $350.

Your "Deal" is definitly only arguably better on paper. Practically, signing up to this deal is alot more convenient and $30 on a $2400 spend doesnt really make or break the "deal" for me.

For me, this isnt a deal I will take because Optus sucks and like you would prefer to buy the phone desperately once prices come down.

                                  • @000lynx: Just letting you konw, you can use the voucher for anything, so you can buy that microwave that is on special that you need, or the food processor.

Anyway, enjoy! And my deal is better, as it's not 24 month contract, and as you rightly pointed out with a better carrier.

                                    • @onlinepred: Ah yes, Good point about not being locked in. That is one of those "cant put a figure on it, but its important" factors. :)

  • how much?

    • Available on all plans.

  • +2

You can't really compare the price of a phone out right to that of a plan. Both have pro's and cons depending on your needs.

  • Why would ozbs even consider phone plans when it's cheaper to get great cheap prepaids and buying a phone out right??

A plan like the one here is insanely stupid to me.

    • +1

Not everyone is in a position to pay for something out right. This is why plans exist.

      • +1

This is true but god damn 36 months!? Even 2 years is shithouse

        • It's not only on 36 month plans - they're just an alternate to the 24 month plan if you wanted to drag it out (why you would, I don't know).

      • To be fair, if you are not able to pay a thousand bucks up front, then you would be better off on a cheaper plan as to have a savings account you can use for all things.

        • Same could be said for buying a car, but people are willing to take out a loan to get a better ride.

          • @Ryanek: Having a thousand bucks in savings, is very different to having $40k in savings. Using your common sense, clearly this logic doesn't also apply to buying a house.

All I'm saying is that if you can't afford a thousand bucks upfront, maybe you should look at going on a cheaper plan, putting some money into a savings for emergencies or luxury items.

            • +1

@onlinepred: I second that. If you can't stump up the money to buy it outright at x dollars, you can't afford it. Keeping up with the Joneses is also really stupid. Money you own gets you something. Plans you sign up for puts you in debt.

  • Yeah, but Optus. No thanks!

  • +1

Just had a look at the Optus 5G coverage in Brisbane -> https://www.optus.com.au/for-you/5g#5g-mobile-coverage
No real need to rush to buy a 5G device on a plan, IMHO…

  • Jesus that's a long plan.

  • +1

I literally bought my Razer Phone for $599 at JB, bought 50gig a month data/sim from Vodaphone for 40$ a month (1 yr contract), and sony wh-1000mx3 for 270$ (lucky price-match). Unless the camera is all you're after, Razer Phones are awesome (120hz screen, awesome battery life, one of the best for gaming and browsing etc). You can feel how smooth apps are with the 120hz screen.

I can't believe people would get $100/month contracts over 24 months, when it's cheaper buying phones outright, and buying much cheaper data plans separately.

My aforementioned phone/sim/headphones cost me me no more than $1350 total.

    • +1

this is why I never get phone bundle plans. You literally save hundreds by buying the phone, sim, etc all separately.
