Great time to try snag a relocation booking from Alice Springs to Sydney/Melb.

I used a one way a few years ago from Alice to MEL after busing up from Adelaide. Much better view from the plane :)

      • +1

Cant stop by coober pedy or woomera on the plane though! Driving through the outback is definitely an experience you should try once!

        • +1

For sure. The bus was still amazing, as was a drive out to Broken Hill a couple of years back!

        FYI:

To be not just culturally sensitive, but to simply be correct, this destination should be listed as "Uluru / Ayers Rock". (There's certainly never an apostrophe, as it was once named after Sir Henry Ayers.)

This is consistent with the Macquarie dictionary and Wikipedia.

The Jetstar website lists this destination as "Uluru (Ayers Rock)".

        From the Macquarie:
"In 1993 the monolith was officially dual named Ayers Rock / Uluru. In 2002 the order of the dual names was reversed to Uluru / Ayers Rock."

So the listing on your website is 26 years out-of-date.

          What's the airport called?

          • @coxymla: A very valid point! I had noticed that its IATA code was AYQ (no doubt referencing "Ayers") (meanwhile, its ICAO code is YAYE, presumably referencing its location – Yulara), but I hadn't checked to see that the airport itself is known as Ayers Rock Airport or Connellan Airport.

Nonetheless, the apostrophe that was in the title of this listing was certainly incorrect. (It's now been fixed.)

  • bear in mind Uluru in feb is very hot 34-40 degrees.

    • Perfect weather for cooking some snags on the barbie

      • +1

Wait until it gets hot enough and you can cook snags on ANYTHING

    • Bear in mind Uluru at night can plummet to single digits (if the clouds are gone) and stays around 30 (if the clouds are there)

  • Bear in mind everything is a rip off in Uluru…

    • Yes, but there is a large IGA supermarket that's not much dearer than the rest of AUS.

Expect to pay 70cents per litre more for fuel though.

      • +1

        So the claimed $1.70 + 0.7 = $2.4 per litre. Crikey.

I camped at Yulara last month and can confirm some things were a rip off, but others were surprisingly cheap. 1L of no name UHT milk was $2.50 (!!) at IGA, but other items like chocolates on special were the same price as everywhere else in the country. The supermarket had everything, including curious items I would have never thought there'd be a demand for in the middle of a desert. Like two varieties of Rollmops.

There's only one fuel station within ~100km so you'd better like petrol at $2.05 and diesel at $2.10/L. You don't have an option.

Oh, and if you want a 10L box of water, it's $4.50 at IGA and $7 at Shell. Also it's a brand name Shell only. No Coles fuel vouches accepted.

    • Camping on the red soil is awesome

Bear in mind I am thinking of a large, carnivorous mammal

    • The bear… That's in your mind..?

  • There's a reason this sale is for November-March: it's obviously the hottest time and very much the off peak season. Also current airfares are in the range of $1100+ (cheaper to fly to Europe!) and plummet in price after 26 October. Guess why…

Even now most days are between 35 and 39C. Still, it's a beautiful place and a visit is highly recommended.

    • Well I hope the planes aren't the ones doing the plummetting since it is so hot on the tarmac…

  • Can't climb it by then unfortunately :(
