Note that these are 2018 models with subtle differences.

They are basically the entry 2017 MBPs. Apple just didn't bother refresh them in 2018.

      • Not subtle difference… pretty major difference. These are only the dual core processor whilst the 2019 has the 8th gen quad core. Depending on the applications that you run, the 2019 is nearly twice as fast… also no touchbar but that’s fairly useless tbh.

How come at these prices Apple still uses dual core and old generation processors?

    • +1

How come they charge $200 extra for $20 worth of storage?

Is 128GB considered usable on a Macbook, because I need to buy my daughter one of these for school soon? Can it be upgraded at a later date?

      • +1

It can’t be upgraded. Nor can the RAM.

Whether it’s usable depends on what you want to do with it. I’m sure many people can get by or would put the money towards an external drive. If you use iCloud or similar then a lot of data can be pushed to cloud storage and only pulled locally when you need it. If it’s just the odd school documents then 128GB should be sufficient, but hard to say. If she’s doing film and TV classes I’d want more.

Personally I wouldn’t want below 512GB for my use but that’s probably more than what most people need.

      • What is your daughter studying at school? My nephew did Visual Communication Design (Year 12 - graduated last year) and he had a 13' MacBook Pro with 256GB.

Apple's official tag line is that it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage of a MacBook after purchase. But I think some people have done so outside of the Apple framework.

      • 128G is useless IMO.

Bought 128G Macbook pro for school use few years ago, had office and adobe, school related software installed, guess what, they complained not enough Storage within 6 months.

They now have to carry 128G USB or 1TB portable with their 128G macbook bricks.

I have an early 2015 MBA with 128GB of storage and for 'school use' 128GB has been plenty, but I have a seperate PC that I use for most 'non-school' use.

      • You can always get a fast USB dongle for extra storage

      • My son had a 128gb Air, was perfectly fine for school years, in fact he still uses it.

Any school work she should alway backup so anything old can just move to a hard drive you have at home.

New MBP’s are rumoured to be announcing later this month

    • The rumoured model is a 16” one with around a $3k USD (so ~4k AUD pre GST) price tag. Maybe they’ll fiddle around with the rest of the lineup with some price adjustments or spec bumps but the main entry looks to be a system in a very different price bracket to these models.

A lot of the 13” models also had incremental updates in July so I wouldn’t hold my breath for too much in this price bracket, but it might be worth waiting 2 or 3 weeks. Not like 10% off sales on Macs are uncommon anyway.

The keyboards on these are such garbage, I've got a MacBook and a MBP and they've both been in for repairs.

    • Was thinking the same. Had these had the more durable keyboard type of its predecessor they i may have been interested.
