Recommend a Forever Car (Budget around $18k)

Hey y'all hope everyone is doing well.

Currently looking for a 4-banger with a budget of around $18k.

Not after anything fancy just something reliable which can take mua from A to B and maybe sometimes to C and then maybe to D and E and hopefully back again. That is all.

On another note came across this offer from a reputable local Mitsubishi dealer yesterday:

2017 Mitsubishi Lancer ES Sport CF
Auto
Blue
Demo 6kms
Mitsubishi Warranty until Apr 30 2024
$17k Drive Away with $2k min trade-in (have a registered 94 Camry to take advantage of that)

Any thoughts on this Lancer offer is it any good? With the trade-in comes down to $15k Drive Away (it rhymes as well).

Cheers y'all any advice and recommendations will be much appreciated :)

Booop.

Ozb will say lancer is dinosaur.

Ozb will recommend corolla / hyundai / kia.

    • +8

Can confirm, Lancer is a POS dinosaur. Might as well buy something decent second hand.

      • +9

might be dinosaur, but definitely not a POS.

        • +5

It was a POS when it was brand new. It’s 20 years old now.

            • +7

@[Deactivated]: Of course I haven't owned one, they are giant pieces of shit. To say I know nothing is ironic, because if you'd actually driven any other car made in the last 10 years, you would know that a Lancer is ridiculously antiquated and is just junk.

              • +1

                @[Deactivated]: how is it antiquated?

                  • +22

@[Deactivated]: it runs a CVT or a 6 speed manual.it has apple carplay/android auto, it has a 5 star safety rating. shows you know nothing about cars that you dont even know what the car comes with. might be time to do a bit of carsales research before you give people advice on things you know nothing about.

                      • +12

@[Deactivated]: So you have gone from a 4 speed auto to admit it has a cvt, but that’s still not good enough for you. You would rather the Volkswagen direct shit gearbox and the lovely inefficient nox producing engine. Good to see you know about car buddy, back under your rock.

                          • +21

@[Deactivated]: Hope you’re good friends with the service advisor, if not you will be by the end of a VW owning experience.

@[Deactivated]: 😂😂 had me until you suggested golf is better 😂😂

                  • +7

@[Deactivated]: Under 5L mileage only makes sense with diesel engine or the car being smaller.

The lancers price range it only really competes with the i30 and Cerato.

                    Fuel figures are:
                    i30:
                    Fuel Consumption Combined
                    7.4 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Extra Urban
                    5.9 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Urban
                    10.1 L/100km

                    Lancer:
                    Fuel Consumption Combined
                    7.4 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Extra Urban
                    6.1 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Urban
                    9.7 L/100km

                    Cerato:
                    Fuel Consumption Combined
                    7.4 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Extra Urban
                    5.7 L/100km
                    Fuel Consumption Urban
                    10.2 L/100km

                    • -3

@Rauland: The Golf 1.4 TSI averages 5.4L/100km and can do better on a long run.

                      • +11

@[Deactivated]: The Golf costs $8000 more.

                          • +10

@[Deactivated]: But you're now comparing cars in different price ranges. A Ferrari is nice too.

                            • -6

@Name: No, this is the same category of car, it's just more expensive. It's not a different class. People would absolutely cross shop these cars, and most sensible people would buy the Golf.

                          • +7

@[Deactivated]: Also a vastly different size. The Golf is a tinny overpriced shitbox for what it is.

                            • +1

@Lichen6420: The Golf is a tinny shitbox compared to a Mitsubishi? Yeah ok. Lol.

                              • +2

@[Deactivated]: The Golf is smaller, they drive like shit and are nothing fancy inside either. If it was 17k i would say go for it and buy it over the Lancer… but it is substantially more expensive. Just not worth the money considering the higher up front cost, higher servicing costs and overall higher cost of ownership.

Lancer might not be the fanciest but they are simple and mechanically bulletproof. Can't say the same for any Volkswagen and their super reliable DSG gearboxes.

                                • +2

@Lichen6420: The Golf has the same interior space and definitely doesn’t drive like shit. To say this shows you’ve never driven one.

                      • +11

@[Deactivated]: Yeah nah, mates 1.4 doesn't do 5.4,maybe if you hypermile. More like 7-8 with 30% highway. Drinks premium to boot aswell.

                        • +1

                          @krisspy: Yeah nah

                        • +6

@krisspy: 2015 90tsi Golf sportwagon. 3200km on the trip computer with an average of 5.1. I live in ACT though, not much stop start traffic. On the highway I can get mid 4’s. Always use 98

@Bypass: What is that in $/100km approximately?

                      • +4

@[Deactivated]: golf need ron95 while the others only need 91 or e10… that is at least 25% price difference …unless u really care about the earth

                        • +2

                          @jasonbon818: 25% price difference?

Lol.. maybe if 91 was 50 cents a litre.

                      • +2

@[Deactivated]: Always consider total cost of ownership, not just fuel economy.

So servicing costs, parts, insurance etc compared to other vehicles.

                        • -2

@Oofy Doofy: Also consider the cost of embarrassment when someone you know sees you driving a Mitsubishi

I like dinosaurs especially that big purple one with tiny little hands.

      • +1

Is that because the big orange ones are Trumpasoreasses?

        • +2

He means Toyota Camaro was that hard :p

  • +5

I don't think your 94 camry will get $2000 trade in

    • +6

it's a trade in deal at 2k min. (arguably they recoup it from OP overpaying 2017 lancer at 15k)

      like phone trade in deals

  • +8

Off topic, but I originally read this as “forever cat” budget $18k…
First though was, this is gonna be an interesting question

    • +8

That was going to be my next forum topic. Thanks a lot for letting the cat out of the Gucci bag.

    • +2

Teach a cat to eat and it will probably live for 15 years. stuff a cat, and you'll never have to feed it again forever

  • +20

I'd say look up the newest Kia Ceratos the 2019 BD model, they are really good value ~20k brand new & they come with 7 Year warranty

    • +1

      Hi, what is BD?

      • +2

It's the latest model of the cerato

  • +7

forever? then yea corolla is the stereotype that applies. or toyota generally, at least. followed by honda/mazda etc

ive had a couple of toyota echos (before the yaris), gf recently got a tiny daihatsu (owned by toyota).
all 15+ years old, going strong. more fun to drive than you'd think too, especially the daihatsu with its puny 3cyl engine
old manager had an echo that hadn't seen a mechanic in over 10 years, 100k km.

ive been advised against mitsubishi. i think my aunt had one and it was problems over the years. theyre a bit of a lower tier in terms of reliability, apparently

    hows the camry doing?

    • +2

Camry is a bit dusty and has a giant male genitalia on it (might increase the trade-in value I'm hoping) but other than that doing pretty well. Thanks for asking.

      • +1

glad i did. thats some good intel

    • +2

      A matiz?

      • +3

        thats a daewoo. no.
        daihatsu sirion

its a tiny old car with a 1l, 3cyl engine. but a lot of fun to drive
basically feels like a gokart, with a torquey engine that doesnt have to pull any weight and sounds good

        • +1

I drove one around nz, including up the steepest street in the world. Considered buying one when I got home, it was a blast.

          Edit: A Sirion manual.

          • +2

@BartholemewH: Nice, that sounds like an awesome road trip.
They're super cheap if you ever make the choice. Even better might be the Cuore. Same engine, but somehow an even smaller car.

btw That's not the steepest street anymore. Some new street in USA I think, took the spot. Although apparently a surveyor from NZ is heading over to question the measurement method used.

        • +1

My missus drives a sirion as well, can confirm its a lot of fun to drive, great car.

A downside is that it requires premium 95+ unleaded, but even factoring in the pricier petrol it has insane fuel economy

    • +2

Yep, I'll can always recommend the Echo/Yaris. Sure it's bit of a shopping trolley and lacks a bit of power, but it's rock solid and has never let me down. Been driving them since I first got my license, has always been trouble free, reliable, and gotten me where I wanted to be. Of course they are also pretty cheap, easy to park, and sips fuel.

  • +10

I have a ten year old Lancer and I am not sure they have changed the car substantially in that time. In my experience they are reliable and cheap to service. A decent a to b car, but worse fuel economy ad limited active safety compared to basically everything else.

  • +5

    Ford Falcon XR6

Have a BA2 XR6 from brand new and still going strong @ 315K Kms

Make up artist? If so, Mazda MX5.

    • +1

Are you implying that I'm ugly?

      • +3

Nope, make up artists aren't typically ugly. Booop.

        • +2

          Interesting. Booop.

  • +7

I'd buy something like a used Corolla, Mazda 3 or Camry.

  • +15

    Corolla, 3, i30.

(There is no such thing as a forever car)

    • +7

Of course there is, just dont drive it…..

  • +3

Any car can be a forever car provided you've got the desire to keep it for that long and a fat enough wallet when things starting to go pop.

  • +10

corolla. I just sold my 2004 corolla to my niece. had nearly 300k on the clock not one single problem with it ever. serviced every 10k. only thing other than fluids and filter I changed was the brake pads. best car I ever had. only reason I sold it as I needed a Ute.

    • +3

Ditto on all the above, Its a late 2004 (built in Japan), sold it to my Brother and its still goes well, the paintwork is also fantastic, I just love taking it for a little drive everytime I visit him (its interstate)

    • +4

      Toyota camry

    • +3

I'm still driving my 2002 corolla. Anyone else still driving an even older one?

      • +1

Not older, but a couple of years ago we inherited a 2002 with just 28,000 kms on the clock. It's a good basic little car, if you look after this car it will treat you right.

      • 1996 - still good

      • +1

2003 corolla here and it still goes pretty well. Had to fix up oil leaks with new seals and a new radiator, but that's to be expected from a car with over 140K on the odometer.

    • +1

curious to ask how much you offloaded the rolla to your niece?

    • +1

Same here. Ute crossover. Corolla is as close as you get to a forever car. And you aren't ripping off your nice selling it to her.

    • +1

Can also confirm. Prior to my current car I had a hand-me-down 2001 Corolla which ended up being sold (regrettably) in 2017. That car really served us well!

    • +1

2004, the death box. only 2 star rated. Nice of you to pass it on to your niece.

  • +2

I was always told to get a Camry. Regret not getting one.

    • +35

Got a 94 Camry if you want one. Hit me up.

    • +1

      They're boring anyway

    • +1

Out of curiosity why Camry instead or Corolla? 2019 Corolla is almost the same size, but Corolla design gives you much more room for putting the seats down to fit skis surfboard, etc.

  • +3

Hyundai i30- I bought a 2012 model in 2014 and it’s now 7 years old and still going strong. Otherwise get a Kia with 7 year warranty and capped price servicing.

    • +1

      Does new card around $18k?

      • +1

Yes. The OP is looking at a demo car to put it into context too.
