Is the upgrade to the 512GB SSD worth it? I don't really need the extra space for saved files and I don't plan to do any gaming, but I usually run lots of tabs (20+) in Chrome at any given time along with Photoshop in the background. I understand a 512GB SSD might be a bit faster over 256GB. I'm thinking it would be most economical to specify a 256GB SSD and just add to or replace the current SSD in a few years when needed?

Get the 512GB SSD if you can afford it. By the time you need to upgrade, you'll want to get a whole new machine by then.

Is the 3-year onsite support worth it? Doesn't seem like it would offer much beyond the ACL.

    • If your machine is time-critical for work, it's worth it.

  • Could someone please check the CPU stepping?

    On Windows:

    wmic cpu get caption

    On *nix:

    cat /proc/cpuinfo | head -7 | tail -5

    Thanks in advance!

  • Why'd they decide on 3 usb a? Could've put a second usb c in instead

  • Hi where/when do I enter the discount code please? I almost purchased the laptop going through the whole checkout, can't see where to enter it. Thanks

When you get to Cart Summary, under the Item Subtotal there is a field 'Enter Cart eCoupon'

  • Even though the SSD upgrade says 'ships in more than 4 weeks' in the cart it says it ships 27-29 September. I confirmed with a sales rep that it ships as per the cart date and takes 5-7 business days from then til arrival, no 4 week wait time.

Thanks OP, sweet deal. And perfect timing for me to use TRS.

  • whats the difference between the hard drive types? 256GB SSD M.2 2280 SATA versus 256GB SSD M.2 PCIe NVMe ? same price

    • Pcie is newer tech. Enhanced speeds not that you will notice in everyday consumer usage

  • Thank you TA - My old ASUS just failed. now I need a new whisky deal to restore data and apps from backups.

  • Struggling to work out whether I should jump on this deal. If only it lasted a few more days. My 5-year old HP Envy 15 is on death's door (has been running hot and slow the last few months and now boots into startup repair in 3 out of 4 restarts), but I think it could be fixed and brought into the modern age simply by replacing the HDD with an SSD. Or am I wrong and is it probably the CPU that's about to cease (and therefore justify replacing the laptop entirely)?

    • If you're getting frequent startup repairs I'd be far more inclined to say your Windows installation is corrupt and you need a fresh install. It's also possible that the HDD itself is faulty/has bad sectors.

Either way when something is 5+ years old it's usually best to replace it.

M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD is no longer available in customization. I almost ordered but I guess I will pass for now. Rep said they might be out of stock on those SSDs.

    • Same, was just going to buy one now. What a pity!

    • Me too. Pity. I was offloading some of my old systems/laptop to fund one of these but now I might just hold off.

  • Are there different form factors in m2 drives. If is was to get a 1TB, what do should I look out for?

How does solidness of this compare to T or X series? Is it closer to them or to the ideapads in retail shops?

  • How come I can't choose the 512gb ssd during customization?

  • +1

TA any chance of a T490 deal?

  • Later post: Does anyone know if this laptop ordered with a M.2 SATA can be upgraded to an M.2 PCIe NVMe later? Is it a different motherboard or compatible?

    • +1

i'm fairly certain it can be because it was an option earlier on.

      • Thanks! I got the M.2 SATA but have a PCIe NVMe at home so will look to upgrade.

      • +1

Hope so, I bought a 1TB to go with this

ugh, so upset to miss out on this. please give us the same offer again!

  • A novice here, hope someone can help.

Which one has a better spec and value?

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge/… - $989.45

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-edge/… - $1,139.40

    Noticeable difference:

    E490
    AMD Radeon RX 550X 2GB GDDR5 / Hard drive - none / Second Hard Drive - 256GB Solid State Drive, M.2 2280, PCIe-NVMe, TLC / Battery 45Wh

    E490S
    AMD Radeon RX 540X 2GB GDDR5 / Hard drive - 256GB SSD M.2 2280 SATA / Second Hard Drive - None / Battery 42Wh

    Thanks in advance!

don't bother with either. both i5s for more than the price of an i7 on TA's deal.

that said, eagerly waiting on the next thinkpad deal from TA.

      • Thanks for pointing out. I didn't notice i7 vs i5!
