Tenda NOVA MW3 3-Pack Home Wi-Fi Mesh System $95.20 + $12.95 Freight ($0 with Plus) @ Futu Online eBay

470
PILOT20

Original Coupon Deal

Not the cheapest in OZB (cheapest was $89)
But still a great price for a budget mesh network pack

Note that these routers have few issues to be aware
- only support 100Mbps Ethernet
- only can config the router via mobile app, no web interface
- doesn’t have fixed IP address for local devices

However if you are not using any advance feature like QoS, port forwarding etc this router is the still one of the best at this price range

Besides, 100Mbps Ethernet is good enough for Australia atm since NBN fastest speed is 100Mbps. Reviews from Amazon mentioned people are able to get over solid 80Mbps download in reality

Can I use my own router and use the Tendas as wireless APs?

    • want to know that too~ Maybe I should google it first :P

    • +3

yes, change the default dhcp mode to bridge

      • +2

I believe these are the same as the Kogan ones? Kogan just rebranded the MW3’s?

I’ve got the Kogan ones plugged into my router in bridge mode, you lose some of the functions in the mesh app when in bridge mode, but I wasn’t planning to use them anyway.

I believe if you’re using them with your router as the gateway you must put them in bridge mode, I had countless issues to begin with where connection kept dropping with the mesh points in DHCP.

    • I do that with my MW6. Just use bridge mode as suggested. They work well.

  • Yeah, can I use something like an edgerouter and have this as a wifi ap for one of the ports/vlans?

    • +2

      Yep that's exactly what I do. Edgerouter-X into 2 MW3's and 1 MW6.

Highly recommend this unit. For the cost it can't be beat.

Any questions feel free to ask.

  • No idea how these work tbh - I have some range issues with just a Netgear archer router - was hoping to somehow improve range by plugging in an old router further away and get it piggy backing off the network to provide better range (especially to the deck). Assume the second router needs to be wired to the first one though.. sorry, noob

    • +3

One MW3 needs to be hard wired and the other two just plugged into a power point. You then place them around the house so they can talk to each other allowing you to 'roam' across them and get better reception.

You can either use your archer as your router and the MW3 just for WIFI or you can use the main MW3 as a simple router also.

  • Hi all just a quick qn.

I have just installed 30 brilliant wifi lights. does it slow down the wifi speed?

    sam

    • +6

      congratulations on your brilliant lights.

If you keep the windows closed it should make sure the wifi doesn't escape.

      • putting into context I just bought the m3 and found it interesting that my internet speed went half.

        • As in you lost half your speed? That shouldn't be happening with mesh - moreso standard repeaters

          • +1

@SevenSmurfs: yup. that was why I was surprise.

does 2.4hertz dropped in speed by half generally?

I am not sure if that is the reason as the m3 can only go 5hertz or 2.4 hertz. and because the lights can only do 2.4 hertz, the whole mesh went to 2.4 hertz and speed slowed down.

I moved 18 lights off my mesh network and speed went back to 45 mbps

    • What is the draw of wifi lights? Is it so you can turn them on and off without walking over to the switch? Has technology made us a bunch of lazy buggers?

      • +3

it was just more cost effective.

the WiFi lights at a discount allow change in colour between warm light and cool light and dimming.

Plate and installation of dimming alone cost 110 for every four lights.

With the added ability to change from cool light to warm light.

Note that it was only cost effective because I got the lights each under 30 and electrician was charging 22 for normal downlights.

        • How often do you find yourself wanting to change your colour temp? For me, every room that I want cool white has cool white, and every room that I want warm light I have warm. I never find myself wishing to change it.

          • @lostn: It's actually surprisingly useful once you start using it. About 4000k in the morning/daytime wakes you up a a bit more and is better for getting things done. Yellower 2700k is more cozy for evenings.

With Hue wall switches, I just have the first click for turning on, and a second to change the temperature so it's not like I'm going into the app or anything. It's even more convenient when it's automated rather than manually changing it.

Another regular use is a "house cleaning" routine that turns all the lights on bright white is useful for rooms where you normally just want dim yellowy lights but need some extra brightness for cleaning.

Full RGB colour is fun for about five minutes over christmas.

  • Better off getting MW6 over MW3?

    • +1

Review showing MW6 has better signal coverage and signal strength than MW3
also MW6 comes with gigabit lan
However, coming back to real scenario most people are satisfy with MW3
So at the end it really depends on your use case whether you need MW6 or not
eg. a standard 200m2 house with NBN50 speed and 4 household will probably be enough with 3 packs of MW3

      • Should it be better to have 3x MW3 or 2x MW6 in 2 story 30sq house

        • 2 MW6 will work well and they are faster

    • If cost is not a problem MW6 can be over kill. Better overkill or MW3 does the job. It is up to you

  • +1

I bought it on the previous deal 89, best money I have spent I have paired it with a netgear router and it works flawlessly

    • Totally agree. The MW3 is a solid piece of kit. I have mine running in bridged mode connected to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 (flashed with ASUSWRT-Merlin) and haven't needed to reboot it once since installing 3 months ago. Very good bang for buck.

      • +2

Could you please enlighten me on how it works? I have similar gears at home. Does it mean you connect one MW3 to R7000, then with the MW3 on bridged mode it will create the mesh wifi network while the wifi from R7000 is disabled (i.e. R7000 is just a wired router and nothing else)? Many thanks.

        • Yes, that is how I have mine setup. Alternatively, you could setup the MW3's with the same SSID and password as your R7000 and keep wifi running on your router, but I didn't see any point doing this as the master node is sitting right next to the R7000. If you had ethernet throughout your house and could put the master node a good distance from the router, the router would then effectively act as a 4th node.

          • @aldroid: Thanks. But if you use the wifi from R7000 as a 4th node it will not be "mesh" (i.e. seamless switching) then there is no difference to buying a normal wireless AP right? I guess it would work if the area around the 4th node is somewhere you don't walk in and out of a lot.

            • @ymmf: Correct, not true mesh. What I plan to do at my house is have the R7000 upstairs. Then run ethernet through the floor and have the mesh master node and 2 slaves downstairs. Upstairs is mainly used for guests.

              • @aldroid: Thanks that clarifies everything. Much appreciated.

  • Bought these for a similar price a few months ago. Completely fixed wifi dead spots in my house. Highly recommend.

  • Why is the cheapest mw6 in stock $220
Was $100 a few weeks ago

  • MW6 $184 here for 3 Pack, for those interested:

  • Google Wifi or MW6?

  • How do these compare to their 3 times as expensive cousins the google wifi mesh? Will it do the job for the average household?

  • Guys,
If you going for this and really wanna enjoy the mesh system , you need to have them wired back-haul for best performance.

There is no issue with Wireless back-haul and works fine for normal browsing/netflix….etc but you'll have the similar WiFi distance/interference issues for heavy duty stuff(not necessarily but probably).

I were to buy this at one stage but got Deco M5 instead.

  • Would these be compatible with the Telstra Smart Modem?

  • Did a quick search and Tech Mall has AU stock with 3yr warranty 3-pack MW3 for $103.20 delivered with PILOT20. A little cheaper if you don't have (or won't resubscribe to) ebay plus
