144Hz, IPS, 1080P, g-sync compatible combo? Had no idea this existed. Very, very tempted.

    • "Free sync"

    • +7

Because AMD free sync is an open standard it didn't take NVIDIA much tinkering in their drivers to support it :)

Nvidia tried their hardest to monopolise the market with their locked down vsync tech and are trying again with RTX cores. Both do not look to be working out the way NVIDIA wants

      • -1

Many Freesync displays are crap (because of the whole open no standards thing) and RTX has nothing to do with locking anything out, it's simply hardware acceleration for DXR.

        • +4

Free sync displays are not crap.. That's something Nvidia marketing has brainwashed people with.

RTX cores added to cuda cores is something AMD doesn't have and if all developers exclusively used RTX cores then AMD cards would look slow and couldn't compete at all.

Developers didn't take and its another gimmick that runs at under 30FPS on a RTX2080Ti

Nvidia try do this this all the time with their gaming programs as without a x86 CPU core license their days are numbered.

      • Agreed. But because they are limiting their best cards to RTX, in a few years time, everyone will have RT cores.

I would buy a 1680 Ti card if they made one. To me, when you show me a game with RT on and RT off side by side, I can see a subtle difference, but I can't tell which is which. If you don't show me the side by side, I wouldn't even know if RT was on or not except by looking at the frame rate (significantly lower = RT enabled).

That's why I was hoping they would release more 16xx cards, but it seems 1660 is the only one they're interested in.

AMD unfortunately still don't have anything that can compete with nVidia's high end.

QHD at 60Hz with free sync at this price is a sharper buy if you are willing to sacrifice fps for crisp image and screen estate

    ips - check
    144 hz - check
    1 ms - check
    free sync - check

this combination looks awesome. any downsides?

Not 1440p and IMO on a 27" 1080p is really pushing it.

For the price though its doesn't seem too shabby if you're into the other features

      • are there cheap or enough other options that include 1440p instead of 1080p? and how much should the screen size be ideally for this resolution? 31?

        • +4

Probably looking at a $200~ premium over this monitor. Not sure if it's the best in the price but something like a MG279Q would be the equivalent.

          IMO..
1080p is good for 21"-24" (though 1440p on 24 is apparently pretty damn good)
          1440p sweet spot is 27"
          4k for anything 31"~+

Just ordered this last night https://www.pccasegear.com/products/44940
          144hz, 1440p, 31.5", good reviews.

          • @Ravensbane: does it happen to be found cheaper than that? via ebay deals?

          • @Ravensbane: That CQ32G1 is a VA NOT IPS ..

You can get 27" 144Hz 1ms VA monitors for $290 on ebay sales.

But they are not as good as IPS.. not as smooth and have more ghosting then IPS and TN

VA does have the best black levels though.

            • @vid_ghost: Is ghosting really that bad today with VA?

              • +1

@cnut: Not as bad as old VA but still not as good as TN or IPS.

it goes TN then IPS then VA for ghosting and smoothness

All have improved in their shortcomings over the years.
144hz TN's look ok, viewing angles suck and colours are still not as good as IPS or VA ( i have one )

144hz IPS with 1ms looks smooth but IPS is expensive and manufacturer defects like IPS glow are prevalent

144hz VA with 1ms also looks smooth but still lags behind TN and IPS for pixel transition times. (ghosting) Colour's and viewing angles are way better then TN and not too far off IPS

Any 144hz monitor will be better then a 60hz :) no matter the tech unless your doing Photoshop clour accuracy and require IPS

      1080P

      • 1080P = 144FPS without needing to spend big on a graphics card

        • +1

I think 24" should be about the max for 1080p, but everyone has their own preference.
