Spending $80,000 on a car to save the environment!!!! Hahahahahahaha, that’s the best dad joke I’ve heard today!

    • +32

Also remember that being able to use Apple Carplay requires a subscription.

    • +1

Saving the environment is not cheap though.

      • +15

Destroying the environment will only cost our future.

      • +27

Sure it is, ride a bike to take public transport.

            @Yummy:

HOW CAN I BUY BMW BICYCLES?
            1. Simply go to the BMW Bikes section of the BMW Shop.
            2. Choose the bicycle you want.
            3. Choose your preferred BMW Centre to buy online.
            4. Select from a home delivery or click & collect from your chosen BMW Centre.

How did they make buying an item sound more complicated than it actually is, make mistakes, and still skip half the steps.
Step 1 is unclear if it's the online shop or a dealership. The 2 links following are "Buy Bikes" and "Find a BMW Centre". Steps 3 and 4 don't apply to BMW Centres.
            Step 2 is redundant.
Step 3 doesn't apply for home delivery and should be part of step 4.
Step 4 should come before step 3 if they are separate.

Finally they've baby-stepped "how to buy a bike" without getting to payment or actually receiving a bike.

Kids would like our next car to be all electric. Problem is we need 7 seats and cheapest option is a Tesla X with 7 seats is $163,000.

Would it be better for the environment to buy a car under $60,000 and spend $100,000 on other purchases that reduce our environmental impact (e.g. Nissan Leaf, Solar Panels, Battery Storage, Insulation, Triple Glazing, etc.)

        • +2

Hybrid alphard can be had for half the price. Toyota quote 5.7L/KM on a van

          • +1

@krisspy: Toyota Alphard isn't cheap. approx 130k landed and if youre importing the JDM Velfire it's about 160k. But top of the like luxury mpv

        • +10

Cheaper to just bribe all your kids with a new phone or the likes, then pocket the other $98k

        • +16

          Who’s the bloody parent here?!

          • @fantombloo: Sure remove the most nutrient dense food from your diet because thevofa said so.

            • +3

@paul04: Without splitting or fusing atoms, hydrocarbons are the most energy dense fuels you can use in a car.

              See the relevance?

          • -1
        • +7

Keep using the car you have, don't buy a new car. When you buy a new car you force the materials to make it to come out of the ground, those materials have to be shipped all over the world, the car has to be shipped all over the world.

Spend a small amount of money buying things, such as the ones you mentioned, to offset your impact. Plant trees if you have any land. Consume less, generally.

        • +1

Theres a lot of rhetoric posted so i will try to answer your question without adding too much to it.

Yeah its painful that there isnt more 7 seater options. I'm the first instance solar generation is a bit of a no brainer, anyone doing the numbers will quickly realise it pays for itself. A real no brainer. Batteries on the other hand will make more sense in a few years. Insulations is a must if your home isnt already well insulated

As far as 7 seaters go, you can get a hybrid Toyota Prius V, they are quite economical and goes half what this bmw costs. Not completely electric but still much better on fuel than your typical internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.

If you are a two car family, its probably also a no brainer to make t2our second car electric, especially if you dont often need more than 5 seats. If looking second hand a Leaf or if new a Hyundai kona EV or a Ioniq are probably better options than the current leaf.

Then you can do lots of other things to reduce your environmental impact e.g. dont hoon, take PB Trans or walk or ride a bike when you can, eat a bit less meat and more veg, run your appliances or the fastest wash settings, wear a jumper rather than use the AC etc.

        • +3

          Nissan eNV200 7 Seater.around $30k

Import via Prestige Motorsport or J-Spec to name a couple of options.

        • +2

Tell the kids if they want an electric car, then they can buy it.

          • +2

@TheOtherLeft: Lol, I just can't fathom a household where the children have a say on how the income is spent.

            • @Joey Jo Jo: When I was 12 my dad traded in his second hand Magna for a new one after I asked him why we dodnt just buy a new one. Was only a few grand difference ans we kept that car for many years so it was worth it. These days I wouldnt follow my own advice but the difference between models was more pronounced back then

        • +4

My kids would like our next car to be a Ferrari Enzo.

          • @Joey Jo Jo: As it's a two seater, choose your favourite and sell the other kids to fund the ferrari.

            Win-win-win-win-win

      • +1

think it’s is not so much as saving the environment as it is for some people saving money on petrol …. we have charge stations at work in our building.

    • +25

I wonder how many Ozbargainers consider the environment when we're snapping up free/cheap Chinese deals we don't need and we'll probably never use?

When you look at what China/India/Russia and the likes are doing for the environment, what we do here is insignificant and pointless…

      (tongue in cheek)

      • +2

Unlike the good old "leader of the free world", the USA! the true champions of the environment.

        • What global warming?

      • +3

When you look at what China/India/Russia and the likes are doing for the environment

Remember, the hitman is not more guilty than his contractor, usually less so.

        • +1

          What

          • @dangerdanger: Obvious reference to the movie Hitman starring Danny Cordray

          • @dangerdanger: I think s/he is making the point that we exports resources that trash the environment.

            • @Scribblers: That would make us the arms dealer / gun runner, not the contractor. I forgot we were that too. The more you think about it the more we find ourselves at every end and the hitman's culpability keeps diminishing in the overall scheme of things.

      • Australia being the 3rd largest exporter of fossil fuels (coal). A change of government would have helped push along better policy not just for our environment, but our economy as well.

    • And charging vehicles with power generated by coal haha

      • +4

Well it's not the most viable in a country where power is from coal and not hydroelectric, solar or wind.

You could still charge via solar panel at home if you have a battery to store all the power from the sun during the day.

        • good point

      • +1

I can afford one, it's still stupid.

        • Ever driven an electric vehicle?
The new Porsche will be game changing. Charges 80% in 15 mins and can do about 500km per charge. And 0-100 in 3.2s.
          Price is $200k

          • +8

            @Bruno28: 80% in 15 mins

            Not a chance in hell

            • @Samsungnote10: They usually set 100% at the 70% mark and then quote how long to get to 80% of that.
The first 50% is quick to charge, hence the usually under half an hour times you get for modern charging.
              Phones do the same.

            • -1

@Samsungnote10: well they said 400km charge in 15 mins.

          • -1

@Bruno28: I'd buy a Prius or something similarly small if I wanted to save the world with a car. I've driven a Tesla, great car but seriously overpriced.

            • @[Deactivated]: i never said its over priced. They are a bit, because its new technology and the first ones have to pay for the future designs.

          • +6

@Bruno28: It can’t do 500km a charge. More like 350km. It’s got less range than a Tesla 75D. And the $200k version doesn’t do 0-100kmh in 3.2. That’s the Turbo S version which will be more like $350k.

It also hasn’t been able to make its claimed 350kw charging. It will launch with 250kw charging. The game changing car you want is the Tesla Model 3 Performance. It charges at 250kw, but is more efficient so puts on more km/h, it’s as fast to 100kmh as the $300k Porsche Taycan Turbo S, has autopilot and only costs $100k. Oh, and it will actually do 500kms.

        • Not when it's cheaper than a standard 530i m sport

      • HAHAHAHA1

    • +10

      What a joke.

    • +5

      this shit is per year??

      • +4

Yep, BMW scam. No other brand makes you pay for it on a subscription.

        • +14

If you can afford an $80,000 vehicle I don't think $80/year is going to break the bank and BMW know that lol. Surprised they don't charge a $2 fee to unlock the fuel cap!

          • +4

@Levathian: Sshhh. Don’t give them ideas

          • @Levathian: 50 cents every time you start the car. Thats a bargain right?

            • +2

@Wootwootwoot: It's just a matter of time till cars are licensed for a yearly maintenance and/or usage fee rather than sold outright.

              • +1

@fantombloo: It's called a lease, and it's existed for a very long time.

    • +1

You can pay about $30 USD off eBay and get it activated for life.

      • +1

        Would it void the warranty?

        • It creates a backup of the original state, and you can revert back anytime. You would do that before getting it service, then re-apply afterwards.

      • Do you have a link? I can’t find anything?

Seller has increased the price since (sold history).

You'll need an enet cable, you can order one from eBay/Amazon/Aliexpress for about $10-15 AUD.

    • At least it's available! They don't offer Android Auto even as an option.
