Free DVD Rental When You Donate a Can of Food for The Needy. 100s of Locations Oz Wide

440

Hi all, this is a charity event I have been involved with and thought I should share it with everyone.
Number 1 goal of this event is to collect food for those in need - but in return you get a free weekly DVD rental. Starts on the 1st of July and goes until the 31st of July.

The idea is simple: Donate a can of food and get a free weekly DVD rental, donate 2 cans and get 3 free weekly rentals. The food then gets donated to the local hunger relief provider (eg. Salvation Army, StVincent dePaul, Foodbank etc.)

The event is supported by Network Video and hundreds of video stores are taking part across Australia.
A list of participating stores can be found at www.cans4films.com.au
I can't talk for all stores, but I don't think there is a limit on how many cans you can donate and how many free weekly video rentals you can get during the month of July. Usually the store is happy to collect as many cans as they can and help those in their local community.

This may be great timing for those with kids on school holidays as many kids DVDs are weekly rentals and you could possibly teach them that there are people less fortunate than themselves.
It is not often you come across a charity event that does not want money and gives you something in return.

Conditions from the website: Tins must be 300g or greater in size (or approved by store staff). Tinned food must not be out of date. All renters must be a member of the store (membership is free). Late fees still apply if the DVD is not returned by the required date. Not valid in conjunction with any other offer.

This is all for charity and will help feed those doing it tough this winter, if anyone can help get the word out (Twitter, facebook etc) please feel free to share the details. Thanks.

    Does dog food count?

    • +8

The stores I know do accept dog and cat food. People struggling do still have pets that need to be fed. It is really up to the specific store. I have also seen people donate rice which the charities have said is appreciated. I have added the conditions from the website above and they are just there to stop people donating tiny cans and/or not returning the DVDs. Most stores are very open minded to what they take - it is a charity event after all. I would assume the person donating has good intentions and normally dog food is more expensive than a can of soup or baked beans.

      • Awesome Love it! Great deal.

How did they manage to move Beechworth into Melbourne's inner East ???

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like the address is right but the google map link is wrong.
Will get them to fix. Appreciate you highlighting the issue.

      • If it's not too much bother, I'd rather they just move Beechworth closer, they have a nice bakery there… :)

        • Not a bad idea. Now I am hungry!
You did well, just checked the website and only found the 2 mistakes you found. Some google pins are slightly off, but the only big stuff ups seem to be Balwyn and Beechworth. (and Beechworth is actually showing in Balwyn, so that should be easy to fix).

Balwyn has also moved to Ararat ???????????

    • Cheers. Will need to get the cans4films website admin to check all links.
The stores mentioned should be correct, even if the google link is showing incorrectly.
If you find others just edit your comment above. I will check the site myself now.

Nice initiative! I don't rent DVDs anymore, but I'll gladly drop in a can or two at my local next time I go past! :)

  • Mi-goreng is the new canned food. Long expiry date, cheap, and easy to make! Tastes a lot better too.

      it's called Cans-4-films, not Noodles-4-films…

Ah mi-goreng, my 'go-to snack' for instant neoplasms. Though I'd rather donate yummy soup or canned chilli :)

Check T&C, with Mi-goreng you can only get asian movies without subtitles. ;-)

Don't think I've walked into a video store for 5 years, but for a great cause why not.

I'd donate a can, but you can keep the DVD. Do people still rent them?

    Some needy also frequent ozbargain..

  • went to one in lakemba which is closest to my home and said they not doing it =(

    • I will look in to this. Sometimes we have stores where the owner forgot to tell his staff.
Since this is the first day, I would hope this may be the issue and quickly fixed.
Also, possible but rare that they changed there minds and did not tell us.
Will see what I can find out. Worst case it may take me to Monday if it is hard to contact the owner.

Lakemba has decided to not be involved, will get the website updated.
Stores near Lakemba that are involved…….
Panania, Moorebank, Liverpool, Mortdale, Kogarah, Petersham, Waterloo, Redfern, Maroubra and Hillsdale. I am sure all will be happy to take your canned food and pass them on to someone in need.
