  • Hi rep, I'm not really a techie person but want to get a decent low spec desktop for light/old games gaming. I can't find any mention of graphics card they come with. Can you tell me please so I can research myself if it will run. I only want to play Battlefield 2 on it.

    • It will have onboard graphics. However I have heard of some people putting low profile 1030 cards in them?

    • +4

Hacking together a budget gaming box from one of these i5 refurbs will cost almost as much as a new PC if you're not prepared to scrounge up a GPU second hand.

The AMD Ryzen deals mean the cost of these Dell refurbs will need to drop to about $150 to keep them viable, which is overdue anyway given these boxes have been selling for the same price for the last two years and all the while the tech is aging.

Techfast had a deal a couple weeks ago, hang on a sec…
      Here, try this one:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/478521

      • plus you are limited by GPU choice
so most only option is the 1050 low profile etc..

also adding the extra GPU makes this also half price of the techfast deals..

        • +2

          Dell i5 $250
1050 GPU $150 - if you can find one in low profile

The Techfast deal is just $90 more for brand new parts under warranty.

          • +1

@jcon: plus techfast has more upgradeable options we can do later on
            or add more hdd etc

            this is only good
if you specifically want a SFF pc

            • @pinkybrain: What is SFF? Man I am old.

              • +1

@savemesomemoney: SFF = Small Form Factor

              • @savemesomemoney: Check out the sizes here.

Size limits how many HDD's you can fit in it - i've got a couple of these and you can fit either (a) 2x 2.5" SSD/HDD, or (b) 1x 2.5" SSD/HDD + 1x 3.5" HDD (but only if it's thin enough).

It also limits the profile of any graphics card, if you need it above the on-board graphics.

                • @[Deactivated]: Man these things are complicated. It's like building an ironman suit for me. I'll go buy the techfast gear recommended by @jcon above. I broke my acer ax3960 when I went for a free upgrade to win 8 maybe 2 years ago. I took it to the shop today and they said the hard drive is broken. They want $200 just for the 500gb ssd before labour. I think I'll just buy a desktop altogether.

          • @jcon: The difference is actually more like $250, as the refurb Dells all include Windows while the Techfast base price does not include any os.

The real comparison I think is whether to spend ~$250 for a low end PC (a refurb Dell; forget any GPU upgrade) or ~$650 for a new, expandable and more capable PC (a Techfast).

  • @melbourne-estore

    Not sure if typo, but:
"Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF i7-3770 3.4GHz 8GB NEW 240GB SSD Win10Pro @$229 Delivered" - looks like only the 120gb SSD form is $229? 240gb would be $259 by the looks of it?

  • +2

    these prices aren't that great

the i5 model has been cheaper

  • Can you double check the CPU's that are on the systems? Specifically are they T variants for instance?

  • +9

Not a deal with this as competition - gives you $110 spare to source the 120G SSD and 4G RAM.

You really should check your competitors before posting these things…

    • OP may already check. How can you know if OP did not?
In my opinion, to survive in the marker, especially the second-hand market where prices, quality and services are really murky, a successful seller does not need to offer the lowest prices :)

      • +3

If they did check and post anyway then that's even worse.

I've bought from the seller i've linked to - the systems were clean, and they're a non-profit outfit - probably part of the reason their systems are so cheap.

        • I can see your point which is based on your own experience.
However, your personal good experience with a non-profit source is not strong enough to secure your statement about OP to check before posting (and from which you rose a negative). Indeed, in your above post, your source is a "non-profit" company, so your comment about a "profit" one is not fair.

I agree with @monkp that the price is not the lowest one, but it may be sustainable in long term with their own business.

          • +3

@badinh: Mate, i don't have time for nick-picking arguments about whether they checked or not. It's not a good look either way.

I negged because the price is crap. Try not to make too many assumptions about my motives.

…but it may be sustainable in long term with their own business.

I couldn't care less about whether this is good for their business or not. I care about whether it's a deal for OB members. There's a separate driver that i'm happy to back the other outfit given the work they do.

    • +1

Perhaps "TAX Invoice Provided" and warranty are factored in to their asking price. It's certainly not competitive, but sustainable for their business.

      • One plus from me :)

      • Each has 30 days - they're not offering anything extra…

        • TAX Invoice means consumer is protected under ACL.

          • +2

@monkp: You're protected anyway - ask for one if they don't provide one - i forget what i got with mine. They're an established business and have been around for ages.

But look, if you'd rather pay more for this outfit then knock yourselves out - i really don't care. But in my view $199 for an i3-4130 is a joke, especially with all the i5-4570's+ getting flogged around the place for less.

    • +2

You could even buy 2 of those to get the 8gb of ram and still have enough to buy an SSD

I bought 2 of these when eBay had the "buy one get one 15% off" deal. They don't specify CPU model, but both came with i3-4130.

    • +1

We should really neg this deal so they start getting competitive with the prices. This is clearly not a bargain

    • not in their interest to check other competitior's prices since the poster is likely the seller or works for this store..
they want people to think it is a bargain price (since it is on ozbargain) and buy it without them checking if this is such a good price..

good thing is there are heaps of ozbargainers who did monitor the prices
and can post their comments + votes on here to inform others..

I know for myself the i5-4570 has been much cheaper than the price listed here.

I currently have an HTPC running an old school i5 760. Would this be much of an upgrade, if at all? Looks like a drop two cores but get better single-threaded performance. I could also not use my 660ti.

    • The gain in CPU speed will not be worth the hassle.
The integrated graphics is probably a lot better, but you have a GPU card.

But if it is just an HTPC, why bother with a graphics card? Were the first gen i5 not capable of good video decoding?

Nowadays, you are better off with a fanless ARM-based box for HTPC, not Intel.

    • that i7-3770 in 7010, is heaps better than i5-760

  • Forgetting the fact this is overpriced, if you want to turn this into a gaming PC then please source a second hand low profile gtx 1050 ti first before buying this. The cards are much more hard to find at a decent price.

    • Many, many people have combined an ex-office Optiplex with a new graphics card.
The market is awash with cheap used SFF PCs, but not gaming cards.
So what if the GPU costs more than the PC? That's economics.

    • Yeah a gtx 1050 ti low profile is going for above $300 AUD delivered atm which is crazy.. $285 AUD click and collect.

You can try your luck on the bidding items but not gonna recommend a gamble unless you are in the gambling mood (and if you are it is probably better to get a pre-built system with much faster and newer hardware and just make some extra space to accommodate it or look into something else).

  • +3

Since the new entry level Techfast deals have been appeared, these Dell boxes are no longer value for budget gaming.
