  • I guess the rumors of these not selling very well have some merit to them

    • +3

The market for Panasonic is definitely more niche, and the L-Mount is it infancy which maybe why people are hesitant.
Their size is definitely not for everyone either. They are DSLR sized, which is great if you're a pro shooter that will hold the camera for hours at a time, but not so good if you're travelling and don't want to lug around heavy gear or look inconspicuous. Hopefully this price will convince some shooters to upgrade 🤞

      • They look like fine cameras, I think the market is saturated and the high price of the Panasonic bodies did not help. Should sell better with these prices.

  • how would you sell a customer to purchase a panasonic over a sony/canon/nikon? interested to know why anyone would want to get a panasonic

    • +1

You mean this or any Panasonic? For these, they're not consumer focussed. From what I recall reading (quite briefly) was that the AF and IS was meant to be very good on these, and the larger body is more comfortable to hold for long sessions. The biggest issue here is the system/L-mount.

Panasonic definitely has some avid supporters. Their GH5 and G9 series are very popular. They do very well in the hybrid photo/video space. Technically, they're extremely capable, well thought out cameras. But I think because they don't have the big marketing budgets of the larger companies, they're not as well received with the general public, and only gain traction with people who heavily research their purchase.

    • +3

Panasonic is the No.1 in terms of videography.

    • +2

If you want video, the GH5 and GH5s are the knees of the bee.

      • +1

I agree for the most part but also keep in mind there are other cameras (like the BMPCC 4K) that are giving the GH5/GH5s a run for their money.

It's starting to come down to how you're going to use the camera and in what situation as cameras are increasing their video quality and features so no matter what you choose you'll get very good results (unless your Canon, in which case you hobble your dslr range so as to not hurt your professional range)

Sony for the past few years has been making great progress with creating a camera ecosystem to give Canon / Nikon some decent competition.

I would have bought this S1 if it was this price when I was choosing between it and the Canon EOS R. At that time I could get the EOS R for $1000 less than the S1 less so it became the obvious buy. The main pros over EOS R are in-body stabilisation, less crop in 4k video mode (1.5 vs 1.8), dual slot SD cards, better ISO performance, better DXOMark score… https://cameradecision.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DC-S1-vs-…

    • I think many people were in the same situation. If the S1 was the camera Canon launched, then maybe people would have paid the premium.

  • Hey any deals for the Sony A7 III?

  • +1

I really wanted this camera when I was still deciding what brand to go with. Eventually ended up with Canon purely as it was cheaper and getting used lenses was far easier. I still think this camera is far more capable than most in this price range. Wish it were this price 2 months ago when I made my decision, would have snapped it up.

    • The lens range is a very valid argument.
What do you think of that slide bar thing on the EOS R?

      • A useful gimmick. I use it sometimes. It is useful once you are familiar to how it operates but not a killer feature to buy for…
I am not so concerned about lenses as most people (except those who make a living from photography) would have 99% of their needs covered with a pair of fast prime 35mm and all purpose 24-105mm F4. I have several others fast primes, wide angles and zooms but they are for specific occasional usage… only see the light (pun not intended) once in a month or two. I am sure after market lenses will eventually come out (Sigma, Tamron etc) just like the Sony A7 when it came out.

      • Honestly, I don't use it, I don't really see the use in it.

Would have much preferred the joystick + wheel which are both lacking in the R & RP.

SONY A7R IV is a strong contender and made more pressure on other (actually all) manufacturers.
I am very tempted but I already have SONY A7RII and Nikon Z6 (which I prefer).

waiting for Sigma Foveon camera now (also L- Mount)

    • +2

You are a camera retailers dream.

      • :D …but money better spent than on booze, fast cars or hookers

    • I also have the Nikon Z6 with the Ninja V 4K recorder. I switched from a Sony A7S and haven't looked back. The Panasonic looks interesting but the Canon mirrorless is a no go - wait for Gen2.

  • Are the micro 4/3 lenses compatible, or is an adaptor needed?

    • +1

I very much doubt it, firstly m4/3 and L-mounts are way different, secondly you'd be crippling the purpose of a full frame camera (if a manufacturer is silly enough to make such adapter). Without going into technical camera jargons, it's like buying a BMW M5 then putting on a set of 13 inch alloy wheels, even if the latter are high quality alloys and gripiest set of tires LOL

    • There is a Canon EF > L-Mount Adapter that opens up compatibility with many Sigma EF-Mount lenses.

  • Digital camera warehouse, any chance of some Sony sales soon considering the announcement coming today/tomorrow for new cameras and lenses?

I want to upgrade to an A7iii + the 90mm G macro but holding off for a bargain to come up

    • The A7III is currently $100 off, plus it comes with a bonus SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB SD Card and Bag valued at $188.
I don't think the rumoured announcements will affect the price of the A7III and force Sony to have a sale.

      • +1

Hmmm okay, I did shop around and I think you guys have the best price on the A7iii at the moment but I might just wait and see
