  • Pretty good price and a very decent NAS. Tempted although I need more bays.

    • Buy two! They're scalable ;) Maybe just go for a the DS1019

      • Not buying two, they need the DX-517 instead.

Looking for a little more CPU also as I need a bit more grunt with that many disks.

    • It has an add on doesn't it? Not sure how useful it is though….

  • Anything for the DS1019?
I dont have ebayplus so cant see what is eligible.

so much just for 4 bays

    • I wouldn't call this cheap, nor expensive.
It's a fair price for this particular unit.
They do a lot more than store data and are probably better said to be an 'Prosumer' NAS or something for a small - medium office depending on needs.
The DSM OS is brilliant, support is A1 and features are great, all of which make the price more palatable if these things are of any value to the user.

If the warranty/support/intelx86 performance etc..etc.. is not required then a cheaper Qnap or netgear unit might be ideal.

I would however say that these are best avoided for surveillance, they only come come with 2 camera licences and additional licences are horrifically priced.

      tl;dr
Price is about fair, reasonable value for money, you do get what you pay for.
Avoid for surveillance though, additional camera licences are obscenely priced.

      • I agree to a point. After running six cameras on my Xpenology NAS for 3-4 years and having zero problems I had to review my NAS & surveillance setup earlier this year because the version of Xpenology I was running prevented me from installing updates which then had flow on affects which meant that I couldn't run later versions of Surveillance Station and other small annoyances. Before going down the route of buying a proper Synology NAS I decided to get myself a proper NVR to trial and see if it was a good alternative so I bought a HIKVISION NVR with 8x POE Ports and reasonable Bells & Whistles and threw a couple of 4TB HDDs in it. It was terrible! Extremely loud fan/air noise, very poor on-screen setup interface plus an equally as bad process for setup via a networked PC and just really klunky & awkward user interfaces for general monitoring & reviewing moving forward. It did work but after using Surveillance Station for so long I was shocked at how poor the NVR experience is but the real clincher was the fact that the NVR cost more than the extra camera licenses for Surveillance Station anyway! I happily sold it a week later and only made a $50 loss then went out and got the Synology 918+ the day after. Threw my HDDs in it and was back up and running within hours, six cameras and all!

  • Is this seller legit? Read their reviews has something mixed. Like "Item not as described", or "Item does not show up"

  • Do these support something similar to the readynas raid-x?? (Where you can add different sized drives). Or are you stuck with straight raid1/5/10 ? Thanks.

    • According to the spec sheet
"File self-healing: Btrfs file system can auto-detect corrupted files with mirrored
metadata, and recover broken data using the supported RAID volumes, which include
      RAID1, 5, 6, and 10."

      • Thanks mate.

Yup, they do Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR).

      More details here: https://www.synology.com/en-global/knowledgebase/DSM/tutoria…

      • Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.

        • Yep I've got a 6,4,4 and 8tb drives in mine. Works great . Just need to get a couple of m.2s for the caching speed up

  • Can anyone recommend cheap NAS for Media streaming and video recording from security cameras under $300? Two bays would be enough for that I guess.
Will appreciate if someone can guide me on this.

    • Try WD My Cloud Home Duo 4TB

  • Futu Online has the DS918+ 667.20 If you dont have ebay plus with coupon POSTIE

  • Thanks Marto77

  • Any good HDD deals? My NAS has arrived from the last deal but haven't found any cheap drive deals yet :(.

  • Isn't this deal from amazon is better when you use shopback/cashreward to get 3% or 4$ back ?

  • I have recently bought the DS218+ and used Samsung EVO 860 pro as the 2 drives without any mirror/raid. It works great. Prior to that I was using readynas etc.. Too much stress from tinkering the readynas and it could not work as flawlessly as the Synology softwares. They are just amazingly simple and robust. I love my DS218+ which is plenty power for my usage. I have not managed to use more than 40% CPU and the 2GB ram is enough with no ram swap being detected by the unit. I wish I have done this earlier.

Do remember this quad cores unit uses more power while hibernate 12.6 W vs 10.59 W = 19% more power consumption at hibernation.
Just for interest, the DS218+ uses 5.4 W at hibernation. In Victoria it costs 28c/kwh. This aquates to 0.35c, 0.30c, and 0.15c respectively per hour. This equals to $3, $2.6, $1.3 per year respectively. I can tell my wife that I have saved $1.7 per year with this smaller unit :).

  • This item is back in stock now to be purchased for 627.3 using PANTHER code.
