After reading below review, I would happy to stay away from this product

    Surprisingly Unacceptable Demands from Bose
I had been eagerly waiting for this new model to be released, but I have to say that it's going right back. First, I was shocked to discover that Bose forces you to download their app to even make the headphones work at all - the headphones will not function at all without it. Good luck if you are in an area without a live internet connection. I was not happy having to do this, but I downloaded the app. I then found out that you are FORCED to open a Bose account or your new headphones will stay non-functional! Further, unless you agreed with their privacy policy, AND give your headphones full-time access to your microphone, AND allow your location history to be downloaded, etc., YOUR HEADPHONES ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL!!! Even the new design is a step backward in my opinion as it tries to make the headphones do too many things with swipes and taps to the ear cups, etc. Sure, you can vary the volume by "swiping", but good luck in making small changes to get a desired level.

    • +20

      WTF fark that.

    • +1

I am hesitant with these as I'm not a fan of the non-fold design. Can't say I've read any reviews that mention any of these requirements… will be interesting to get feedback from bargainers when they get their hands on them!

    • +6

If this is a Chinese product, then US will claim that China is again trying to steal their information.

    • sounds like DOA, like literally! this may turn into a flop compared to the QC35.

    • +38

I have the 700s so I can provide some info here.

First, I was shocked to discover that Bose forces you to download their app to even make the headphones work at all - the headphones will not function at all without it.

That's not correct. The headphones work out of the box as any standard bluetooth headset would. The activation requirement in the app is definitely dumb, but you could simply skip using the app if you were concerned about it. AFAIK the only thing the app provides is more fine-grained control over noise cancellation and auto-sleep.

AND give your headphones full-time access to your microphone, AND allow your location history to be downloaded, etc., YOUR HEADPHONES ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL!!!

Aside from the fact that the Bose app isn't even required, this is total fear-mongering nonsense. It does not request location data, at least not on iOS. It does not have have full time access to microphone. Maybe Android is different, but I doubt it.

      • +8

On Android it's pretty common for Bluetooth or WiFi device apps to ask for 'location'. This is because allowing access to Bluetooth or WiFi could give the app access to a list of devices around you, which could be used to identify your location.

It's just the way that Android shows that permission. It doesn't mean that the app will track your location, but Android is acknowledging that it could.

        • +2

Just to clarify, they only need location access if they want to see real MAC addresses for wifi/bluetooth devices. This isn't required for normal functions, usually it's because the app wants to uniquely identify the device.

          • @ssquid: Thanks! Do you know if they can get SSIDs (and whatever the Bluetooth equivalent is) without the permission, or is that also blocked?

I feel like most WiFi smart lights (and other products) put the last 6 octets of MAC in the SSID, so arguably they don't really need the MAC to determine the device serial number.

            • +1

@bienvenu: Only the MAC is obfuscated if location permission hasn't been granted. Wifi SSIDs and Bluetooth friendly names aren't unique.

            • +1

@bienvenu: MAC addresses are only 6 octets in length anyway.

When android and iOS devices scan for networks they'll use randomised MAC addresses to counter tracking. The location permission exposes the true MAC address.

      • Have you got the qc35 or the Sony xm1000? If so, do you think this is worth the upgrade?

        • +5

I went from QC35 -> Sony -> 700s. I posted a mini review further down the thread, but short version: no, unless call quality or multi-point bluetooth are worth the extra $250ish to you.

    • +3

You should get the latest model TFH they make some discreet units nowadays without the stigma the earlier ones had.

    • -2

Absolutely same thing as with xbox One x, I was shocked that it didn't let me set it up and play games on it out of the box until I gave the Nazi spy internet connection, made a Microsoft account, logged in, agreed to all terms and conditions and literally sold my soul to it… Welcome to new world order. Not happy? Well already next year you can join Elon Musk on his brain chip ventures, wanna upload your conciseness, connect your mind to an app, be a mobile hotspot? No joke.

    • +1

Bose always gave me slight Apple vibes tbh… I'mma stick with Sony XM3 for the headphones

    • -1

      Good to know, damn.

  • -4

    They'll be $298 by Xmas :)

  • +8

Half a grand for headphones - Bargain :-o

    • +2

Pair them with a $1500 iPhone for the complete look.

      • +3

That's a cheap iPhone… you can spend closer to $2,500 if you try harder…

      • That's below the cheapest XS model's price. Good bargain.

  • +1

From what I've seen review-wise, when compared to the Sony's:

These have the best sounding microphone. They have 'beam forming' tech (like HTC phones when you use their video cam) that concentrates on a specific noise.

Very clear sound profile in mids and highs

    20 hr battery life

    No EQ

    Not foldable, but unique design

    The Sony's:
Have a slightly heavier emphasis on bass (when compared to the 700s)

Has an EQ in the app

    Foldable design

Noise cancelling seems to be just about equal. Reviewers rave about the 11 levels of noise cancellation on the Bose, but I remember the Sony also has something similar.

Considering we are on a bargaining site, I reckon the Sony is still the better value. I'm not sure if they'll go down further in price due to this competition. I mean the Bose is just up there in terms of pricing…

    • Just wait until the XM4s are released then for the discount. Maybe Sony will have fixed the Bluetooth issue.

      • @icecold5000

What Sony's bluetooth issue are you referring to?

Have you please got a link?

        • +1

They can only connect to one bluetooth "hotspot" at one time

Which is an issue for some and not for others

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks for taking the time.

That isn't an issue for me. However, I just googled about call quality for the XM3. I own a QC35 and wanted to get a headphone with ANC + capable of calls, but it looks like XM3 isn't the answer.

          • @[Deactivated]: It’s not an issue for me but for others it’s a deal breaker. Plus you have the codex support as well so it’s not a simple comparison

    • +1

Reviewers rave about the 11 levels of noise cancellation on the Bose, but I remember the Sony also has something similar.

      Sony has 20 levels

  • +3

save $200 and get the Sony WH1000-XM3 - you'll get LDAC which is the highest bitrate for bluetooth audio, incredible noise cancelling, light profile, overall incredible experience. The only drawback is the microphone for phone calls, if you plan to make phone calls with your headphones.

  • +5

I got these yesterday and sold my XM3 on gumtree this morning.

They're clearly bad value at the moment, but I got them because I wanted XM3-like audio but with multi-point bluetooth + better mics (and had a big JB voucher burning a hole in my pocket). I have a lot of trouble with people not hearing me when I'm on the XM3s.

So far they're what I expected, so I'm happy. For sound quality, I would give the edge to Sony, especially since it has an EQ, but these are definitely in the same ballpark.

And a nice surprise, the touch interface on these seems really good. The volume changes as you swipe, rather than after. Which makes interacting with the touch pad more like a scroll wheel then a button that's triggered after a gesture is registered. It's a small touch but I like it a lot.

One word of warning: the app is hot garbage. It requires activation to use, which appears to be very broken (took me 20 or so attempts for it to take). Thankfully you don't really need it.

    • If all I care about is listening to music and movies on a plane would you say the XM3 are best?
I tried them next to a set of QC35s in store and couldnt quite pick them. The Bose seemed more comfortable but the XM3 seemed to have stronger NC.

      I can't decide!

      • +1

the Bose had that vacuum feeling for me.

The XM3 was better for me overall, especially in terms of price.

      • +1

Probably the XM3, the only edge that Bose has is they are more comfortable to wear for long periods. Otherwise XM3 is better in almost every other way: NC, audio quality, battery life, and usually price.

        • +1

Also the XM3's have a terrible mic.

          • +1

@Jasonissm: Definitely, but I was speaking specifically to their use case:

If all I care about is listening to music and movies on a plane

            • +1

@evanjd: Oh crap, sorry missed that. Basically comfort is the main draw but for my money, I'd go with QC35ii's over the 700's, but the XM3 are pretty comfortable too, the Bose are just a step above.

        • Thanks for the info :)

    • when you cup your ear to allow noise in, does the noise sound digital and staticky like with the Sonys or natural sounding?

How did you get it already? I thought it was preorder still?

      • when you cup your ear to allow noise in, does the noise sound digital and staticky like with the Sonys or natural sounding?

I hadn't tried it until your comment - but much more natural! It's not done by cupping the ear though, there's a dedicated button you long press to enable it, and then pressing any button disengages it (including the touch pad).

How did you get it already? I thought it was preorder still?

They're in stock at many JBs. That's where I got mine.

        • That's not as elegant a solution as Sony's cupping the ear.

If there's an announcement you need to hear, you want to hear it immediately, not have to long press.

          • @lostn: Yeah, it isn't. They call it conversation mode, so I guess it's optimised for a different purpose. Cupping your ear is a way more elegant way to activate it, but needing to keep the ear cupped isn't ideal for an extended conversation (though I would think at that point you would just take them off).

      • They're already available in most stores. Released yesterday.

  • +4

I have the Bose QC35, they have great pairing and switching between to 2 devices, and really comfortable especially if you wear glasses. The new ones being non foldable would be a pain when travelling.

    • The 700 carry case is just under 4cm taller than the QC35 one. Not a huge pain.

      • ok, but i don't use the case when i travel, i fold mine up and put them in my carry on gadget bag, takes up less room.

      • I don't expect its height to increase when not folded. But its width and length would be bigger.

  • I bought this yesterday on the qantas deal and then read about the B&O H9i and bought that too. OzB is a dangerous place

    • why?

      • Good question. Impulse really. I’m not a very good OzBargainer really. But I don’t mind sharing one of them with my boy. The old wired Sennheiser Momentum he had is dead.

  • +3

If you have access, it's $511.27 @ JB Hi-Fi Commercial Family & Friends Program

  • +1

For this price I'd buy a WH-1000XM3 and a WF-1000XM3 instead, which I've already done. One for winter and one for summer, or you can say one for travelling and one for jogging, whatever you say.

  • +1

They look hideous in my opinion but I guess that is highly subjective.
But after seeing this I won't even think once let alone twice about replacing my Sony WH-1000XM3 with these- especially not at this price point https://youtu.be/7DMDA5pde-0

  • +3

I watched a few youtube video, basically if you already have qc35 buying this is a bit unnecessary ..

    • At least if you have the series II - voice assistant is surprisingly handy.

      • Do you really need it? All you have to do is say ok google, and then speak normally, which should feed your voice into the phone and use the phone's google assistant.

  • I'll replace my QC35s with a pair of these in 6 months when the price is consistently down in the 400s

  • Is this the upgraded version of the imfamous QC35 ii ?

  • +1

Wait for WH-1000XM4, estimated to be launched in IFA in September. The prices should be in free fall soon.

    • Thanks for letting us know - very helpful!

      (TIL about IFA)

  • Omg it’s like double the price of the 35, is it double the quality?

    • -4

      No.

How many Corollas can you buy for the price of one Ferrari?

      • So corolla and Ferrari (BTW one being a brand and one being a model) are made by the same manufacturer? And the corolla was their flagship model until they released the Ferrari..? Sounds legit!

        • -1

Any Ferrari (including the cheapest) vs a Corolla.

Doesn't matter who made it. They're both cars and do car-like things.

In this very thread, people are comparing it to the XM3 which is half its price. They're not made by the same company either, but no one says you can't directly compare their value. That 35 and 700 are made by the same company is irrelevant to the purpose of discussion: is it twice as good? The same question can be asked of any competing product, irrespective of who makes it.
