Harder to recommend at $1899 while the Hifiman Arya Unveiled ($2300), Hifiman HE-1000 v2 ($1800), Hifman Arya Organic ($1500), Hifman Arya Stealth ($800), Moondrop Cosmo ($900), and Nan-7 ($1200) exist.

ATL is $1400ish, which makes a lot more sense.

To be honest, anyone buying the HD800S at this point isn't really looking for value for money or how good they sound compared to other headphones in price ranges around them, has been the case for years now.

Whoever is getting them is looking for that airy, huge soundstage (for headphones) and unique sound.

      • +2

and not to mention how comfortable they are. I have 2 HD800(s) and just cant wear anything else due to the weight, and of course I just love the sound stage.
However, ATL is $1500, happens all the time during EOFY and BFCM.

Which is why I mostly picked a bunch of headphones that do resolution, detail and sometimes imaging better. The Arya line-up was made to directly compete with the HD 800S.

One addendum: the HE-1000 v2 is probably more like $2300.

      • I'd just buy them because I trust the build quality more than the other ones recommended above.

    • Sort of off topic, but where can you get the Cosmo and Nan-7 at those prices? Sales?

      You sure love Hifiman

Take it up with Audeze (LCD-2, LCD-X, MM-500), Audio Technica (ADX3000, ADX5000), AKG (K812 Pro), Focal (Clear MG, Hadenys), for how they shake out in this segment, and how they price their products.

Hifiman have done aggressive and iterative work in the space, but others are mostly focusing on top tier R&D and/or delivering in the sub-$500 USD market. The ATH-ADX3000 was a sad recent entry, while the Hadenys has more promise with a further price drop (ala the Clear).

There's some other brands, but not sure many sell locally and you're often looking at garage-made electrostatics with additional costs (decent energiser) or something even more esoteric (RAAL ribbon headphones).

I'd look at Dan Clark Audio personally

For open back? Nah, their strength in this space currently is materials work for enclosures and dampening rather than pushing technical performance outright.

    Thanks OP bought 10

    • I just need 2, each for my ear

These or the verbatim's at Officeworks for $12? Both get 4.5 stars!

Or you can mod your HD800 for 10$ 😂

  • +2

Honestly I found the hd800 better than the hd800s. Cleaner bass. Clearer sounding and cheaper. Got mine for $999

    • Same here, and I never modded it

  • These? or wait for the HD820 closed back to go on sale?

    • +5

You should probably demo the HD820 before buying, at which point you'll probably not want to buy it.

  • The headphones have a yearly sale at $1500. Consider waiting if interested.

  • Does it cut hair for this price?

  • I picked up a used pair on eBay for $900 and later sold the stock cables for $600. So, effectively got them for $300—great value in my opinion.

  • Will this enable me to hear the crunch of players footsteps in Tarkov from the other side of the map?

Already picked up my Focal Clear OGs from AddictedToAudio back in 2023 for $799. Now THAT was a deal.
