No Bose, definitely not any more.

    • +5

      why? I love my QC35ii

      • +3

Install the new firmware and you won't say that again.

        • +3

True, and Sony also has its own problem with its latest firmware and ANC.

          • @Daabido:

and Sony also has its own problem with its latest firmware and ANC.

            Oh, I hope mine haven't automatically updated…

          • @Daabido: Daabido, what kind of ANC problem is that? I have Sony WH-1000XM3 since they were out last year and am so happy with it. ANC is just amazing. I had long flights with wearing Sony headphones and I am very impressed by the quality of the headphones and ANC in particular. I use them a lot, even when vacuuming at home I turn on ANC and am listening to my audio books (I must say if I turn the volume almost all the way down I still can hear the audio book perfectly with working vacuum cleaner).

            • +5

@SergK: There have been claims on both the QC35s and 1000XM3s that the latest firmware for each downgraded the ANC quality.

              https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/akyrn2/psa_the_…

I haven't seen any measured differences between the 1000XM3s and there are a number of claims from people who had the older firmware, upgraded, and then downgraded noticed no differences either. I'm staying safe and just not bothering to update at all by not running the app and letting it update. I'm wondering if perhaps there are differences but not intentional and may be some sort of error between the app communicating with the headphones and the NC environment option is stuck or something (I know this option affects the NC level quite a bit when I was playing with it).

The only site that backs up the QC35 claims is rting but they're using measurements from 2-3 years ago versus recent measurements so it wasn't very scientific as worn pads or other tertiary factors with the set-up may have been contributing to the measured differences.

A French tech page recently measured the QC35s and noticed no significant differences: https://www.01net.com/actualites/non-le-nouveau-firmware-du-…

              • @Satirical: Thanks Satirical, I must have missed this. Will need to check my Google Play settings in case I have apps auto updates enabled and turn it off for Sony (if it is possible).

        • Install the new firmware and you won't say that again.

If I don't install the Bose app, will I avoid updates?

          • @lostn: Yes. It starts downloading the update when connected to the internet before it installs so if you can potentially just disable all data access and continue to use the app.

        • really! Can u share what version u on?

  • +10

Way too overpriced. I'll stick with my QC35s.

    • +2

wait for 6 months then get your special deal from any retails shops in AU or Amazon America

      • Bose price drops take a while.

$368 after ebay 20% off was the baseline price for QC35. It does get lower every now and then, but it's usually $368.

700 has a higher sticker price, so maybe $400 is the baseline price. Which is kind of what this is after the gift card.

        • Not quite. It’s $495 after gift card. But I’m still getting it anyway. If you make lots of calls like I do, this thing is worth every cent.

          • @wayl: I use the earpiece of the handset.

Any time I talk via headset, other people think I'm talking to them, and its awkward. I would say hello, and people would look at me or say hello back, looking confused, wondering if they know me or once knew me but forgot who I am.

If I'm the one who made the call and said hello, people think I'm trying to talk to them because they didn't hear a ringtone.

            • @lostn: Hahaha fair enough. I am on the phone for 2-3 hours a day professionally, and often I’m dialled into a conference call for an hour or more. I can’t use a handset for so long without feeling fatigue.

    • +2

Search for YouTube comparison vs wh1000xm3. It's phone call voice cancellation is amazing, a league above wh1000xm3. But if you don't need that Sony is still better, slightly

      • +2

Yeah, they're basically trading blows but about even. And yet, these are double the price.

        • Yes for now, they will drop in price like always.

          • @onlinepred: They'll have to drop like a rock then because the RRP of the Sony are $550, with this being higher, and the Sony were released in August 2018, took a while for them to drop around $300, in that much time the Sony will probably drop even lower, I don't see them catching up in price, especially if they announce an XM4.

            • @Jasonissm: Yea here's hoping XM4 is a good set with multiple connections, a mic that matches the price. Really if you want NC, Mic, Multiple connections then there is only Jabra 85h and Bose 700.

              • @onlinepred: Speaking of Jabra's they're also water resistant. That'd be another awesome feature I'd hope to see in the XM4, maybe bit too much wishful thinking though.

  • +1

Unbox Therapy reckons these are on par with the latest Sony offering NC wise but the Sony is better in every other way. At this price, you can almost get 2 pair of the Sony.

    • +11

I love connecting 2 devices at same time.. Sony doesn't have that that's biggest let down..

      • Yeah, hopefully the next generation releases soon, maybe early September might bring us an announcement.

        • -2

          I don't think they will.

The majority of users don't ask for this feature because they don't bring two phones with them.

          • +2

@lostn: I don't think anyone wants this feature for 2 phones, it's all about phone and laptop or tablet or something which a lot of people use.

            • @Jasonissm: I do too.

But I don't need to listen to both at the same time. I don't want audio competing against each other.

If you get a call on your phone while watching a movie on the tab, does the movie pause automatically when you answer the call? Does audio cut out on one or do you hear both at the same time?

I would manually disconnect one if it's connected to both because I don't want the feature.

              • +1

@lostn: I do, laptop and phone at work. Waiting foe XM4 to drop, if they kept the bass and added this, i'm in

              • +1

@lostn: It just makes switching between devices seamless instead of having to finnicking around with the Bluetooth options. Don't know why Sony hasn't implemented it yet especially for the WF-1000XM3s

                • -1

@Jasonissm: I don't think it will be available in XM4. I just don't think Sony considers the feature essential for enough people. It's a relatively niche use case in the grand scheme of things.

The vocal ones who have asked for it have made it known for years now that they want the feature. If they still haven't done it, it sounds like they consider it too small a minority to bother. It's sold well enough without the feature, so they figure it's not important.

I'm not really sure what else they can do in XM4 that improves upon XM3.

It just makes switching between devices seamless instead of having to finnicking around with the Bluetooth options.

It's already seamless when you're switching between devices. It's only when you want them both on at the same time that you would have to switch in options. I don't think the two devices can talk to each other directly though, so you'd have to manually pause or stop whatever you're listening to when you get a call on the other device.

If they implement it, I would need to find a way to opt out of it because I don't want to hear audio from two devices at a time. That would just complicate things for me if I pair it to multiple devices. I'd have to manually disconnect it from the other device. With the frequency of notifications I get on my phone, it would drive me bonkers to hear the chime every few minutes when I'm trying to watch a movie on my tablet. Yet I don't want to put it on silent either.

                  • +1

@lostn: It's not seamless if you want to switch to a different device you have to unpair and repair to the new device, it's just an extra hassle.

                • @Jasonissm: they have implemented it with the WF-1000XM3s

                  https://youtu.be/6rTsXMqz1Ik?t=305

              • +1

@lostn: If I'm listening to my phone and a Skype call comes through on the laptop, I want it to switch.

    • With the current deal going on you can get 2 pairs of the Sony for bit over $500, then have another $100 left to spend on some beer or something.

      • If you have a code, sure.

  • +3

    Holy Cow $600

  • Oh men , Bose is gonna have hard time…

  • No thank you. In some aspects they are a down grade from the 35s

    Jim's Review Room with the 700 vs WH1000XM3s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7l8MU8Em5I

    • +1

The XM3s are meant to compete with the QC35ii

For a $600 price tag the 700s better be a lot better than the XM3s to even have a value proposition

      • I don't really see the purpose of the higher price tag either as it doesn't excel in anything by a large margin (unless you somehow really need something to make phone calls all the time but really?). For my personal use, it's a downgrade by not being foldable and allowing me to stow it more conveniently when travelling. Having to carry a large case like that takes up way too much space in carry-on/backpacks.

        • It's Bose. Their pricing model is similar to Apple's. And they control pricing tightly.

      • +1

Jim prefers the XM3 over the 700.

  • BOSE being BOSE again… that was nice while it lasted…. their portable speakers and NC Headphones were the odd balls by their standards….

  • I wonder if the new design will age well.

    • +7

I get a feeling the new headband design doesn't click when you adjust it.

With every other headphone, I count the number of clicks on both sides to make sure I have extended it equally on both sides.

This is looking like it will have smooth gradients, and no 'clicks'. I'm OCD about this stuff. I don't want one end of the band to be extended more than the other or it won't be a perfect fit.

Also, the way the band divides the cups means that the touch pad on the cups is smaller. That's not a good idea if you're using the cups as a touch pad for controls.

I have to admit it looks cooler than the old design though.

I don't need this since I have both Sony and QC 35 II (which I never even used). But because I can't resist wasting money on headphones, if I see this at $350 I'll have to buy a pair. And probably never use it except on flights.

      • +5

Lol, I'm a click counter too, thought it was just me.

I see so many ppl on the train with epically lop sided distributions, like 6 clicks on one side vs zero to 1 on the other, drives me bonkers.

        • +2

Do you feel the urge to fix it for them? Like when I see people with the label of their shirt or jumper sticking out the back of the collar, I have to stop myself from tucking it in for them.

  • +1

Received mine from the States. The background noise cancellation on phone calls is vastly improved over QC35s, which was my driver for uograding.
Ability to connect to multiple devices was also why didn't move to Sony.

    • NC for listening better?

  • +1

Tried some demo units at JB Hi-fi today. Noise cancelling on the Bose is about the same as the Sony from what I can tell; maybe a slight edge still to the Sony. Both noticeably better than the QC35s.

Definitely paying a premium for the build quality and style on the Bose. It is a much sleeker looking unit, but I never found the Sony or previous QC35s particularly ugly.

Personally at $595 it's too much, especially when you can get a good deal on the Sony's at the moment.

Bose’s gorgeous NC 700 headphones are worthy successors to the QC35 – though they can’t quite dethrone the Sony WH-1000XM3

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 review: Verdict

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are supremely stylish, and when it comes to sound quality and noise-cancelling they retain most of the strengths of their esteemed predecessors, the QC35. Undoubtedly, they’re the best Bluetooth headphones Bose has ever made.

The problem is, Sony, has set an incredibly high benchmark with the WH-1000XM3, and the 700s can’t quite match it. The Sony headphones might not be as stylish, but they house more features, sound better, block out more noise and are around £80 cheaper. Given the choice, it’s obvious which one I’d pick.

Why I Bought And Returned The New Bose 700 Headphones

  • I know QC35 does well in wearing comfort but it seems like NC700 has received mixed review, some may say it is not as comfortable as the QC35 but others suggest the opposite

  • +3

    This is a bargain site.

    This is not a bargain!

    • Yeah it’s not a bargain, this is very much full price. Just with a $100 gift card that you’ll probably never use.

  • Has anyone tried to get JB Hi-Fi or Myer to match this? I’ll never use the $100 at HN.

  • Damn I need to wait 3 business days for my discounted egiftcard from AGL, the preorder bonus would be ended tonight.
