Samsung 2TB Desktop Hard Drive $89 Harvey Norman

680

Saw this in Todays Melbourne Herald Sun, I guess national sale. The online store still has it listed as $99 of course.

SUPER SATURDAY - This Saturday Only 25th June 8am-6pm

Samsung 2TB Desktop hard Drive - $89 [Limit 1 per customer]

I brought one of these when they first went on sale @ HN for $99 and haven't had any issues. "Only" USB 2.0, but that is fine for some people, and me.

They also have the 4GB Toshiba USB drives for $5 [Limit 2 per customer].

*EDIT: Okay I've uploaded an image of the page, but can't change the original linked URL

This is a pretty good price. I paid $128 for one of these in February. Although, this week it started clicking every time it tries to read the disk, so now I've lost a couple hundred GB of data and I have to return it. Take from that what you will. :)

Would this be the wrong time and place for me to admit that I misread his name as 'Milkypants'?

    • That's a shame. I've had mine for around a year now and it's on 24/7 and have yet to have an issue with mine.

    • Mine started having clicking noise 1 day after I purchased it.
That's when I found out that you must go back to the same Harvey Norman store to get a full refund.

    • Mine developed the same clicking too. I thought it was just my luck and got a dud. Seems like quite a few others have it too

  • Beat me to it lol, I was going to upload the whole page :)

      • I can upload the full page, but do not know how to change it or display it on here.

But on that page it does not mention any Asus Netbook for $154. On another page they have an Acer Netbook for $194 after cashback.

  • OW price beat?

    • OW don't stock them.

  • btw the USB3 version is around $116 with free delivery.

    • (116-89)/89 = 30% more expensive.

I bought this during their boxing day special for $99 and still have it.
the USB 2 is slow and the power cable really annoyed me.

so that caused me to go out and bought a harddisk Mobile Rack ($20 from MSY)

Since then, I have been buying and using internal Hard Drives with the Mobile Rack.
Full speed, no extra cable, cheaper to buy too.

I also told me friend to buy one each. ;p

I beleive these need a firmware update to prevent unwanted data loss.

    • +1

Never updated the firmware on my one, and haven't had any data loss. Where did you read this?

  • Wagga Harvey norman is selling USB3 version of these for $99, bought 1 a few days ago… could be $89 this sat?!!

I posted this last time these drives were advertised but it's still important:

Be careful with these drives. They come with a firmware bug that potentially loses data. Samsung has released a patch found here http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/faqView.do?b2b_bb…

Tutorial on applying the patch if you don't have a floppy drive here:

    • What are the specs on these drivers?

      5400 / 7200
      Onboard cache? 8/16/32/64mb?
Can they be removed from case and put into a tower PC?

      • They're standard 3.5" 5400rpm eco-drives. Yes they can be taken out of the case and used in a tower PC - that's how I used mine for quite a while.

You have to break some clips or stickers or something when getting them out of the case. They can be put back in, but you wont be able to return for warranty as it'll be obvious you'd taken them out at one stage.

      • Don't bother taking them out of the case to use in a tower PC. Absolutely useless write speeds (in the area of 15MB/s), this coming from 2 of these coming from 2 different stores - same problem.

  • Last December it was selling for $99, and now it is only $10 less …

Still a good price, I got mine back in December, no problems at all.

Nice price I bought it early this year for $99. HN staff refuse to give me that price even when I show them the AD, until I take it to counter scan it forcefully. They are idiots

I dont like the power saver in this Samsung drive, it keeps on turning off every 3 minutes and takes 30 seconds to start up again which can be quite ennoying

  • That Wii console deal for $137 looks pretty good

  • Just bought one, the quality is better than i thought. Thanks for sharing!

  • I for one will be avoiding these Samsung drives. They sound too problematic for my liking.
