131
WINTER2011

Just got an email…

"Travel Insurance Direct is offering you, your family and friends 10% off the cost of travel insurance for your next holiday."

If your travel insurance is not a lot try looking out for a voucher that gives $5/$10 off the total amount instead.

EDIT: with many thanks to itx (see below), TIDTHANKS will give you $10 off your insurance.

  • I would be careful using TID. I claimed a lost camera a year ago. The camera was 3 years old and cost $450. They wanted to pay me $60 to replace it. The same camera was selling used on eBay for $130 plus, so it was impossible to replace it for that amount and then also add the cost of the memory card and case.

Granted they do state that items covered will and can be depreciated before payout. But 85% is a little ridiculous. Plus they do not disclose the depreciation formula used. It took a lot of hassle and letters to reach a semi-reasonable payout of $150.

So if your looking at purchasing travel insurance to cover goods, better look elsewhere. I would class TID as health cover only (although thankfully never had to claim for a health related expense).

    • These 10% off things are a dime a dozen with TID and I had similarly bad experience with them, except I had a bag of lenses stolen from between my feet worth over $2,000 even second hand and, long story short, they wouldn't let me claim anything because the camera itself wasn't stolen with them and I'd only put "camera" on my additonal cover when they reckon I needed to put "camera" and "camera lenses" etc separately.

You basically nailed it. They're possibly OK for cheap health cover (maybe, haven't had to use it) but crap for property cover.

  • I agree to go elsewhere and find travel insurance.

I was going in 1 weeks to Japan before the tsunami hit. Afterwards I got everything refunded from travel, hotels except TID travel insurance. I was 1 week outside the cool off period and they sent me a email stating the policy its none refundable which is understandable however the circumstances I do think a few concessions could have been made.

True that I was lucky I wasn't there in Japan at the time, that could have been allot worse.

Use TIDTHANKS for a $10 discount instead (only better value than the code above if the premium is less than $100 obviously)

I used TID insurance with an OzBargain posted 10% discount last year. I lost my 16Gb 4th gen iPod and got it paid out minus the $100 excess. The claims process was quite simple and I didn't even need a police report or other evidence (apart from a receipt of course).

Keep in mind that if you have a Platinum or Gold Visa card (may be mastercard too, but i dont have one), that VISA offer FREE travel insurance for family if the majority of travel is purchased on Visa.
    It also includes Medivac too.

  • I have to neg on TID also. I was in Japan when the earthquake hit in march and I lost my bag containing my laptop\wallet etc in the ensuing chaos at DisneySea.

They rejected my claim as my bag wasn't stolen and was classed as being 'unaccompanied'
    rubbish.

  • hmm i'm going on holiday this week from perth to sydney, getting a bit worried about the ash clouds. Think they'll cover me if i buy travel insurance now?

  • no most of them don't. Someone was saying that you will only be covered if you purchased insurance PRIOR to all this drama.
Also 10% TID is not a deal. They ALWAYS have a code you can use for 10% off. Just google and you'll find one.

  • Six month old camera went for a swim overseas recently, TID paid full claim with no depreciation. Formula prob kicks in after 12 months. Even factoring in the excess the payout exceeded the combined cost of the insurance and replacement with the same model camera as the camera had actually depreciated considerably in that time.
