Not the best (or even top 5) for bonus points at the moment with that annual fee. The ongoing points per $ spend is high so it might be worthwhile for those that plan to keep the card long term.

    But we're professional ozbargainer

    • +4

      That's Dr Ozbargain…

cover against theft of or accidental damage to your golf clubs

    Well I'm sold

  • I don’t see anything for the personal and business needs of medical, dental and veterinary professionals here. Any other card offers the same?

    • +1

Hey grasstown, BOQS provides specialist banking services to these professionals. You may want to check out its website. As for the card, you can use it for personal and/or business spend (it's very rare for business spend to get such a high points earn rate), with separate cards if you wish to segregate expenses, plus access finance for your business and earn points there too. More info in our article :)

These features and the unlimited lounge entry are the things that differentiate this card from others. And are good features. I missed “each time you travel” as I assumed it was the standard 2 entries a year. Unlimited is a better word. Ps I’m not eligible.

  • +7

Nothing special or even exclusive about 50k points when the annual fee is $400.

  • +9

    $400AF
    Only 50k bonus points
    $120k min income
    No free annual flight/travel credit

Seems pretty rubbish value to me?

    • +5

Hey miq, the Priority Pass membership alone is worth more than the annual fee. For example, if you were to purchase a Priority Pass membership with unlimited lounge entries for the primary member only, the current cost is US$429 (approximately AU$621) per year. And then there's the value of all the other card benefits too.

    • +1

Complimentary Priority Pass membership pays for card annual fee if you travel often.

    No, thanks.

  • worst card offer ever

Would be handy for Flying Doctor, Doctors!!!

I find BOQ Specialist’s approach to signing up medical students completely predatory. Act like you are there to provide them financial assistance instead it facilitates young, ignorant students to waste away their soon to be income. Sure the funds are much needed for some but most people I know loaded up the card on holidays and discretionary spending left with a debt which took months to pay themselves out of.

As many said, this card offers an average deal in comparison to others currently available.

On the contrary, having a credit card 6 months prior to work allowed me to accrue statements to claim my full salary packaging before March of the intern year.

While I think banks have a degree of responsibility to look after their clients' spending and earning capabilities, I also believe future doctors should (it's a shame many don't) have the insight to manage their finances. At least, more so than the average Joe.

      • +1

You absolutely don't need a credit card for salary packaging purposes. Yes they're convenient, however not necessary. Sounds like BoQ sold you something you might not necessarily have needed…
And doctors don't have any more insight into their financial position than the "average joe". In fact a lot more of them should read the Barefoot Investor before signing up for that next BimmerMercAud lease…from BoQ Specialist

I never said you needed it per se. I'm saying it worked really well for me - print off statements and done. Took me 2 min to sort out the full amount. I never had a debt on their card, spent only what I had in the bank and only on what I needed. I'm an ozbargainer after all ;) The debt issue is secondary to people not knowing how to manage their finances better, not the fact that they prey on students, who btw, are only 6 months away from their full time job.

I said doctors should (not do) know better. It's a shame that they don't.

Sounds like you were burnt or just hurt.

Completely disagree. I graduated as an international student with $200k debt and $300 in my bank account. Boqs gave me a loan to buy a much needed car and pay my rent for the first month before I finally got paid. Every other bank told me to bugger off. If it weren’t for these guys and their recognition of our future earnings, I would have been homeless when I started internship.

      • +2

As I said, some people it provides much needed financial support but that has not been the majority of uses I have seen from within my friends and peers.

        • I don’t see how offering a genuinely useful service is predatory. Med students are typically poor on grad. We don’t get paid usually for a month after starting internship. Boqs recognizes this and provides much needed loans and cards other banks refuse to because boqs is one of the only ones that recognizes doctor income potential. Just because a few morons can’t manage their money, doesn’t make it predatory.

    Pros:
High ongoing FF earn rate (especially for a Visa card), lounge access membership with guest access, travel insurance etc.
    Cons:
Only for medical professionals, ridiculous minimum income, you still have to pay overseas transaction fees it seems, which is ridiculous as well when you’re paying $400 for a card with so many other perks.

  • +1

Have to say, it's an amazing card for the right person. Cheapest card on the market with full PP, the sign up points are a bonus. Some societies get a further discount on the annual fee too.
But- if you don't know what full priority pass means then this card should be a hard pass, as you probably don't travel enough to make it worthwhile.

    • Couldn’t agree more with you.

Cheapest card in Australia with unlimited PP for cardholder and a guest. Only 3 banks offer this perk, with BOQs charging the lowest annual fee

  • Does existing customer with their platinum card get the points and perks if upgrade to signature? is it considered a new customer?

    • If you have a BOQS credit card you aren't eligible for the 50k bonus points, but of course you can still get the card to enjoy the ongoing benefits.

  • +1

If BOQ Specialist is still treating their customers like back in their Investec days then meh.

    • What did they do during their Investec days?

  • +1

Has anyone had experience with Priority Pass? i searched Adelaide and there was zero lounges. Melbourne had a bunch of cafes in terminal 2 only. Doesn't seem such a great deal to me??

    • Bali has a pp lounge that is ok.

    • As a Qantas gold flyer I have access to Qantas and one world lounges, but just for the lols during longer transits have gone into some of the PP lounges (I get a couple of free entries each year via one of my credit cards). They seem fine - way better than waiting outside, although not as good as the top lounges.

For people with families they would not be great - low on kid friendly stuff, and entry dragons tend to be tough on the whole letting extra guests in.

    • MEL has a Plaza Premium lounge which is pretty good (as is the one in BNE). With the cafes/restaurants, you get $36 to spend per person ($72 max) and you can visit multiple places if you wish.
With ADL, the PP app only shows the Rex lounge, but strangely it's not appearing on the PP website. Not sure what is going on there.

  • "medical, dental and veterinary professionals" …. so as an amateur doctor I am not eligible….. damn.

  • Would a locum that took time off to raise a family that didn't earn $120k the past year be eligible if current contract is looking like it would exceed $120k?

    • Hey Heb, unfortunately we can't comment on how BOQS would treat an application like that. Apologies.

  • Perfect for vets who do no longer practise. I know a lot of doctors, even have some rellies and most are poor investors and rather trust someone they know for such advice.

How many oz bargainers here had an op1?

  • Shame it’s only 50,000 bonus points.

Last time BOQ specialist did such an offer was in 2018 via Points Hack - 70,000 bonus points.

Their standard offer for this card is 20,000 bonus points.
