I've had this phone for 4 months now. Very happy. I'm a very heavy user (as any respectable Ozbargainer) and the battery last 2 days. Regular updates — which is surprising for a relatively unknown brand. Highly recommend

I should add the camera is mind blowing. Never had a Pixel 3, but the quality is on par with my work iPhone X. PS: I'm a photographer

      • Are you using the default camera app? As I have the F1 non-play and I would say my one is more iPhone 6 level. I could do a comparison as that was my last phone, still have it.

        • Yes the default App. The F1 Play has a new 48mp camera. I believe it's a sony. Honestly I am impressed. It is definitely on par with my iPhone X, especially for Portraits

          • +1

            @gg99: Samsung S5KGM1 f1.7

            • @radissimo: Cheers :) F1.7 is quite impressive, it now explains the shallow depth of field

              • @gg99: Is the shallow depth of field created by the camera app (i.e. artificial)?

                • +1

@lomie: The larger the "hole" [F stop] the more light can go in at any given 'shutter' speed, but the shallower the depth of field. The same rules apply as did in the old days of film.

                  • +1

@terrys: Yes, but this is a tiny little sensor (1/2"), so even though the aperture is 1.7, it's still a tiny little hole. The specs I could find for that sensor say that it has a Angle Of View of 113', which makes it roughly equivalent to a 13mm lens on a FF/35mm camera. This means that, at 3m from the subject, the FOV will be ~3.7 METRES! Not exactly a shallow depth of field.

Shallow DOF on phones is almost entirely due to secondary cameras and computational trickery.

      • How quick is the shutter? Practically given up on phone photography due to how shaky my hand is paired with how slow shutter speed is. Usually my subjects are gone once I've hit the button, haha.

Missus just got herself the Oppo Reno Z and it's practically instant, so I'm after something like that.

        • very quick. however the AF not as fast when shooting macro

          • @gg99: Hmm. Good to know, thanks for the response.

I picked up the f1 for about $50ish less. Crazy to hear the comments about the camera on this model from the users above. Makes me wish I had of gotten this model instead (for the random times I want to take a decent photo)

    • Similar situation here as well, had the F1 for a month now. I got the F1 for about $30 less than this deal. There wasn't much info to support F1 play having much of a better camera despite the 48MP spec (which is mainly just image processing, it's not an actual 48MP sensor, CMIIR), and at the time lowest price was $290.

I opted for the $50 cheaper option as the camera was the only main difference to me,
4GB ram is enough for me. The camera on the F1 is great and gets the job done but I would compare it more to my iPhone 6, not iPhone X level like gg99 has commented..

If someone with the F1 play could do a camera review versus F1 or another such comparison that would be great.

                    F1 vs F1 PLAY

Resolution 16.4 Mp vs 48 Mpx
Pixel size 1.120 µm vs 0.800 µm
Sensor Samsung S5K2P7 vs Samsung S5KGM1
        Aperture f/1.7 vs f/1.7

      • The camera is fine in good lighting with still objects. Trying to snap a photo of my kids that don't stay still in average indoor lighting conditions is sub par. I too would love a direct comparison between the two

  • +2

    Wow.. Looks tempting
    Nice screen
    huge battery
    B28
    NFC
    TRRS jack
    apparently good camera
    apparently regular updates

    but…
    I don't think MTK P60 = SDM 660 ???
MTK chipset so no ROMs and you're completely at the mercy of UMIDIGI for updates

    • +1

Processor is pretty snappy, never had issues with lagging and I use it all the time. So far I got an update per month. Last one was yesterday

      • +3

Processor is plenty fast enough, but, being mediatek means some things are more difficult. Rooting is more difficult (I haven't rooted, but I see that there is a procedure on xda). And I haven't found a google pixel camera port which works on mtk processors; the only one I've found is version 2.x which isn't really any better than the standard camera.

Still very happy with the phone.

      • +1

I just looked at some reviews and it does seem performance of the P60 isn't an issue at all.
Just the other things mentioned.. like you'll probably never move up from Android Pie.
That's not really a big deal if you change phones once a year.

  • +2

The only thing that's missing for me to make it a near perfect phone: Status LED, Zoom lense (not a must though), IP67

Still, fantastic phone for the price!

    • I've forgotten that it doesn't have a status led.. I guess they're not that vital really

  • Better to choose EU or not EU?

    • +3

Not EU. The EU ones have restrictions related to EU legislation.

      • +1

I would have thought the EU models restrictions would be in privacy protection for the purchaser, limiting presintalled spyware, and allowing for the device to be unlocked and so on.
For example, often LG models sold in EU can be unlocked, but everywhere else in the world they cannot.
I was more concerned that the bands and hardware may be different for each model. I think the chargers are different (cylindrical pins for EU vs blade pins for not EU), so neither is particularly better for here as they would both need a converter plug.

        • Re chargers: The irony is that China uses the same power outlet as Australia/NZ (but upside down I think) - but even though they're sending the phone from China, there's never an option for a Chinese plug. I always end up having to use adapters.

          • +1

@macrocephalic: For small things like chargers in China they actually use their 2 pin US type plug instead and that's why you don't get them.

  • What do the Bundle options mean? It says EU GSM and Not EU GSM, what do these mean?

  • +2

Same price at Gearbest and I think they will add GST. Would it be safer to order from them?

  • Let down only by the screen and chipset. But damn tempting for a tick in every other box.

    • Screen? It's a 6.3" higher than FHD screen. Holding the phone as close to my face as I can focus currently, I cannot make out the edges of any pixels.

      • -2

It's IPS though. So it'd be a downgrade for me in that regard.

  • So are we actually going to receive the phone if we order from DX?

  • How do the specs of this stack up against the Umidigi A5 Pro?

  • Between the comments in here warning me about this site and the general bad rep Umidigi has online, I sure am hesitant. May just have to spend more for a safer bet.
