uniqlo thermals are cheaper than this.

This. I have a couple of Uniqlo heattech warm and extra-warm stuff and think they’re quite good. Just wonder if these thermals from Kathmandu are any better.

    • +3

Yeah I go with Uniqlo's thermals as well. Kathmandu price is quite expensive (ps ripoff)

    • +4

Have Uniqlos, which are great. Bought some of these to compare.
Will review next time this comes up on OzB.

I have been using uniqlo heattech (the basic one, not the extra warm), and Kathmandu's KMD core for some time now. For me KMD core works better, even though it is slightly more expensive. The cheaper uniqlo heattech is just like an undershirt and does not seem to provide much warmth in the colder weather.

      • +1

I have the older merino baselayer and the thermaplus.

        Also has uniqlo ultrawarm.

I find the merino keep you warmer (a lot). But I also like the way uniqlo's feel. It is thicker, but not warmer.

The thermaplus is thinner, but is also equally warm tbh. Plus it has silver ions so it doesn't smell. I'd use the thermaplus for skiing and uniqlo for everyday at home.

These are a different version to the older thermaplus, so I want to see how they differ.

That merino base layer from Kathmandu though, wow those are great.

        • +3

Merinos are THE best. They score high in terms of both feel and warmth.
Uniqlo heattechs feel better against the skin compared to the KMDcores but KMDs are warmer. I use KMDs for the coldest winter days and the heattechs for other times or when the KMDs are in the wash.

@aurthohin: Merino thermals are the best- not just for warmth and feel but for the fact you can wear them for days without them smelling, unlike synthetics Perfect for layering and for camping or trekking in really cold conditions.

Anaconda had a run out on their Cederberg Pure Merino thermals a few weeks back - selling at $29. Bought a stack of them at that price.

And I find short sleeve tops are much better than long sleeve when it comes to thermals, especially when you are layering in really cold weather. Long John bottoms are essential though.

          • +2

@aurthohin: Aldi's have merino thermal underwear on sale about 2 times every year. They run out of most sizes within 4 hours. They ought to be available all winter.
Also recommended from experience are the heavy, densely woven Carhartt thermal base layers. They are much less flexible than merinothough, and probably still require a shipping forwarder to obtain from America. Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Underwear-Carhartt/s?rh=n%3A5…
Oh, and they are spot on in sizing. Only purchase small if you are extremely ectomorphic/emaciated/anorexic. The pants are tighter fitting around the thighs than the top is around the torso & arms.

Electicity is so expensibe now that people cannot afford to heat their homes during winter and near to wrap themslevs in 3 layers to stay warm. Thanks, ecofundamentalists, for making electricity a luxury good only middle and upper classes can afford.

I prefer KMDmotion over Core. It feels better.

The Merino KMDAscent is the best but also the most expensive. I have one shirt, but can't justify buying any more. They don't get discounted much.

          • @lostn: yeah i bought the motion over the core. I think compared to the previous versions:

            KMDcore is the old polypro

            KMDMotion is the thermaplus

KMDascent is the merino (but instead of pure merino, it's mixed (ie, cheapened…)

@mbck: ThermaPLUS is permanently discontinued with no rebranding. I actually liked this line, though the long sleeved version has very tight sleeves.

KMDMotion is the rebranded UltraCORE. I like this line too. If you look at the customer review for KMDMotion, UltraCORE and KMDMotion reviews are all bundled together.

KMDAscent is the rebranded XT Alziro. It is the same as the Alziro except the inside red threads have become green. I compared the composition of fabrics and it was identical.

              • @lostn: Ultracore >>>>> ThermaPlus

                • @sparkles: Maybe. It might be why they discontinued the ThermaPlus. I got a bunch of ThermaPlus on clearance and was quite happy with them. They don't get smelly either.

              • @lostn: ah thanks for the clarification!

              • @lostn: I should add that Ascent is indeed Merino, as was the XT Alziro it was rebadged from. If you have a problem with wool, this will make you itchy. It does that for me a little bit, but not intolerably so.

I only have one shirt, and it's the XT Alziro which I got for $50 on clearance.

  • Need some long sleeves thanks OP!

  • I used to pay $15ish for these about 3 years ago. They're still going strong!

    • Yeah I got a few cheaply back then too. Not sure why they are so expensive on sale now?

  • Cheers OP. Got 9 x KMDCore items for $89.95 delivered + 7% cashback from shopback.

  • Ty OP. Also, shopback has 7% cashback and suncorp has 8% off giftcard (i received the giftcard almost instantly after purchase)

    • Cashback is not qualified for:

Promo codes or voucher codes not approved by ShopBack
Gift card purchases and Use of Giftcards
      Returns, exchanges & cancellations
Store app bookingsGift card purchases and Use of Giftcards

Are u sure, cashback is valid for using giftcards to make purchases?

      • Officially, no. But it works anyway. Did for me.

        • Thanks for confirming :-)

        • Well, you haven't got the cashback yet. Just confirmation that it is tracked.

  • Are these offers online only, or in store as well ?

    • both.

But online has cashbacks which I forgot about.

      • are you sure it's at store as well?

        • Yes. It says 3 for 1.

Add 3 items to your cart and when you go to checkout, the discount is applied.

  • I made a purchase and after entering my credit card details, it came up with "there has been a processing error". I checked my CC account and the payment is listed as pending. No invoice has been received though. Anyone else get this?

    • Sometimes that can happen with a transaction error. Usually the pending status will go away after a few hours or so

      • Okay, I might wait to see if it does disappear before purchasing again. Thanks :)

Got these in a previous sale, love them, but I found womens sizes run very tight! I am a size 6 on top and bought size 14 in these, bafflingly.

  • The mens shirt page is broken

  • +2

used to love kathmandu but their sizes have shruken crazily, I wear an XL jacket from them that I bought about 6 years ago, went in last week and their 3XL wont fit me …. absolutely crazy, shame nice clothes but just ridiculous sizing

    • +4

You know, my wife keeps saying her clothes are shrinking. All of them.

      • the XL I have from them fits like a glove, its a non stretch material so hasnt altered in size over the years.

their current XXXL doesnt fit …

thanks for the fat joke tho …

    • did u check their size chart?

    • Yep - totally agree. I had an older version of their thermals which I loved, so bought these in the same size (Womens 16). My sister who is a 10 said they fit perfectly.

  • Much difference between the core and motion lines?

  • have uniqlo heatteach but can't cope with winter. it's good for autumn though.
bought these kathmandu to try out. hoping it's as good as its hundreds reviews.

  • It's just me or this page really opening funny?

In case you were wondering if it's worth getting Summit Club membership for these… no, it isn't. I put three items in the basket with membership and the discounted price is applied to individual items, but the 3 for 1 price is the regular price.

  • I find Kathmandu thermals tends to suck alot of sweat in and doesnt really dry out.
    I prefer uniqlo ones.

  • I like the look of Kathmadu gear but it's all made out of Polyester? Why the 5 star reviews for overpriced shitty quality material?

  • Not sure if mentioned, I made the mistake of adding one item to the cart assuming it was a 3 pack. I only received one today. Looks like i should have added 3 items for the same price. Need to call them to sort it out i suppose
