Technically yes, but apparently it's not that great.
It can. Depends what you want to do with it. If it's just for direct streaming to one or two devices simultaneously it's fine but once you ask from significant transcoding it becomes a bit sluggish.
This is the most highly recommended device to do this in this price range.
I bought one a few weeks back from Kogan for this reason.
I've been remotely playing GOT 1080P rips perfectly to my iPhone while im at work without any issuesI have the nvidia shield running PLEX server with external USB HDD ( not SSD)..and works PERFECTLY with all manner of videos, movies etc.
For anyone who is on the fence on this: Go down the Kodi rabbithole.
No way Kodi is like having to code machine language to get it working. Plex is clean, just works out of the box and amazing UI pretty much same as google movies. Wouldn't touch Kodi again with a 20ft barge pole especially for NAS usage
Agreed. Installed Kodi and tried a few packages and really disliked it.
Im sticking to Plex
Depending on the content you have, kodi tends to be simpler to get going.
If you want 4k, kodi, or SPMC has much less drama for just watching TV / Movies.
Just add a folder, and your library will be filled and good to go.
HD homerun is also fantastic work on the shield for regular TV, but if you want "Offline foxtel" then it's still Plex. It's doable with kodi, but it's simpler with plex.
The downside for kodi is library maintenance, and adding artwork, etc. Adding is easy. Removing or changing is harder.
Trakt.tv and TCMU are great, Maintenance is a chore, removing or renaming content, regular updates & scans, etc. But if you have a good manager app, like filebot, TMM, or sonarr/radarr/lidarr etc. Kodi is pretty much perfect, with regular maintenance. And irregular maintenance. And overnight maintenance. Etc.
Plex, makes it easy to share between desktop, mobile and TV, if you spend the money for Plex-pass. But you lose a lot of finesse and polish being so usable/universal. You can get away with less management and renaming hassle, but it is set and forget.
I'd vote the plex plugin for Kodi for the player
I've found on my Sony Android Tv and Foxtel Now android box, i get smoother playback using the Plex plugin within Kodi than using the Plex player by itself
no idea why though
Any news of when the next shield version is getting released? and what's the average price without discounts?
Not sure but genuinely interested in how they can improve it short of adding 8K Dynamic HDR playback.
This was so much cheaper around Nov-Dec last year.. Want the controller edition but it was going for ~$220 back then. Plus the rumour of the new shield being released. These things have held their value for so long.
Yea, bought mine from Wireless1 for 220 with controller so this seems a bit expensive in that regard.
How long ago did you purchase?
Dec 2018
Got one many moons ago for around $160 without the game controller. One of my favourite purchases ever. If it died tomorrow, I'd happily purchase another even if it cost more now. A new model sounds interesting/exciting but it's not like these will become obsolete overnight like yesterday's mobile phones.
great bargain…
i have had one for a while and its miles ahead of all the other boxes i wasted time and money on…I'm so glad I got the original shield TV way back in 2015. It has saved a lot of poncing about and it just works. And is always very fast with no lag. And the software updates are like getting a brand new device every year. So one easy payment, and at least 5 "new" devices in one. And counting!
I can not add to cart! what's going on
CA does 20% off on ebay every couple of months, doesn't it? So should be able to save another ~$11 if you could wait?
Maybe every three months if u are lucky. They rarely have the 20% off because they don't seem to price jack or have inflated pricing like the other common sellers.
I’m all for saving a buck or two but who knows if/when they’ll do a deal like that again. Looking back through the shield tagged deals and looks like the last cheapest price was Kogan at $181 in Jan 2019. You can wait another 6 months or you might just wait forever….
This, or an XBox One S for Plex?
This
This. Xbox One S can't run a plex server. Can only install the APP
Running OpenFLIXR on Hyper-V and it works quite well, so no need for a server.
I have both, 100% plex on the shield. You can also get plex for kodi, which was a hassle, but worked well enough after some teething issues with NAS file access.
The Xbox one S has trouble with codecs. Even though it is more than capable hardware wise, you have to deal with Microsoft software limitations. Expect to see regular transcoding for 720p files because of audio or subtitles, or bitrate / format problems.
Even kodi on the xbox one has the same problems.
Shield itself has similar HW problems but the codec and subtitle support is nearly flawless in comparison. I was able to take a portable 2tb with 4k movies, unplug the shield, and watch them on a 12+ year old 720p plasma/ old 1080p Dick Smith special, with no setup or problems while on holidays, with no internet/phone signal.
Because of Android's system access to the hardware, and because it pre-dates HDR, it doesn't have the hardware for HDMI 2.0a, so HDR support is sporadic. If you want Dolby Vision HDR, I believe the Apple TV is the better/only plex client, but YMMV.
While Android OS Updates for 8 and 9 will probably fix this, the xbox one won't be updated.
For 4k movies, shield. The remote is also ridiculously good, apart from it being easy to lose between couch cushions, due to the size. It's also faster and easier to use, likely due to the shorter menu/UI animations, sic.
If you have a decent PC, you can try Geforce sharing, to stream pc games on the TV. It's not bad, but the xbox one is easier and more reliable. YMMV.
Fun is over! OOS!
Aaahhggh missed out
Oh no, missed again
So what is Plex and why do I want it.
Kind of a personal netflix for your own media.
You can set up your pc, some NAS systems or this as a plex server which means all your movies connected to the plex server can be converted (transcode) to a smaller files size and streamed to a plex player on your phone, tablet, smart tv etc. Thanks for that.
For someone that just streams Netflix and uses YouTube it might not be worth the effort setting that up.
Yup. Get a Nvidia Shield and an IPTV sub and you're set for life. 2,000 HD TV channels including EPL Sports, Discovery, NatGeo, Disney, Nickelodeon, HBO, etc for just $8/mo compared to paying $200/mo for Foxtel, for what? 50 SD channels with a few HD channels thrown in..
How do you get all these channels for $8? Got a link?
Yeah, $8 for HBO doesn't sound exactly legal.
slight difference between paying for a legit supplier and pirated iptv streams
I've got to keep holding out for a new model.
all the best with any wireless drop outs you may encounter with one of these
I've never once had any issue with the Shield's WiFi. Have you tested other devices in the same location at the same time you experience dropouts? Could be a faulty unit, but more likely it's interference or an issue with your router.
Would run an ethernet if you can anyway.
Yeah I find the wifi lacking at a distance from the router….hope to see an improvement when it's in the same room…
Says 5 left currently
Thanks, just ordered one
Can this run as a plex server if I plug in an external hard drive?
