Never list your item for $0.99 if you think it will sell for more than $20.

Listing at $0.99 has a higher selling fee so you make less money when the item sells.

If your item sells for $200 and you listed at $0.99 for free you get $179.10 after ebay/paypal fees
If you list your item for $1 and pay the listing fees you get $187.02 after ebay/paypal fees

For most items listing at $0.99 is now bad value as you end up paying higher selling fees.

Ebay is just trying to make more money out of those people who list items cheaply to avoid the higher insertion fees.

I think that most people list their items at $0.99 to avoid the listing fees and most people probably do not know that they are actually going to pay more fees when their item sells.

  • This is a clever marketing scam by ebay. For reasons anthony listed.

Negged because, although it is useful for people selling a lot of really low value items, I suspect the majority of people will end up losing money if they take up this 'offer' without looking into it properly.

  • shifty buggers. it ain't like they're not making money hand over fist

    • I'll give you a + because of the star wars reference

  • Damn - I've been fooled.

  • according to this page, http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/fees.html, the higher final value fee with free listing is capped at $50, so the difference should only be (0.0525 x $50 = $3.95) vs (0.079 x $50 = $2.625), or am I missing something?

the higher final value fees have a cap of $50,

The fees are capped at $50.
So the maximum you pay ebay when your item sells is $50

      be (0.0525 x $50 = $3.95) vs (0.079 x $50 = $2.625), or am I missing something?

You have put the figures in the wrong place
      (0.0525 x $50 = $2.625) - The final value fee if you list for $1
      vs
(0.079 x $50 = $3.95) The final value fee if you list for free at $0.99

You are thinking of the selling price, so if the item sells for $50 but the $50 fee cap is the maximum amount you will have to pay ebay.

If you item sells for $640 after you listed it for $0.99 the ebay selling fee is $50.56 so you would only pay $50 because of the $0.99/free listing fee cap offer.

But if you list your item for $1 and pay all of the ebay fees then when your item sells for $640 you will only pay $35.64 so you are still better off paying for the insertion fee and not listing for $0.99

      • Ah, thank you for clearing that up Anthony.

I have listed about 20 items this month on Ebay and quite a number of them will sell for over $20, Doh!

Also, irrespective of the reasons given above, this "bargain" is pointless:

Who is eligible for this promotion?
"Qualifying Sellers" for the purpose of this promotion are sellers who are validly registered members of any eBay site with an Australian registered address and who receive an invitation by email or message in their eBay.com.au My Messages account
The invitation is linked to the USER ID to which the invitation is sent by eBay. Qualifying Sellers must list using the USERID at the top of the invitation.

Anyone who is eligible already knows about it

    • I didn't bother reading the fine print - I just deleted it like all the others (they send them weekly)

Ow Anthony my brain hurts now lol

  • i agree its a trap, dont be fooled

  • I have listed lots of items, some of which don't sell.
You have to factor in lost fees for unsold items.

So 99c free listing might be a good idea sometimes.

  • Thought this was available to everyone now.
