Eh. Spend the extra $30-$40 and get the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD58X shipped from the US, which uses the same drivers as the 600 series:

+1 for the heads-up, but delivery usually takes quite a while, and honestly I also hate the way Massdrop does business. You need to register just to see the product, really?

      • Honestly, for the community alone, and the pricing drops that you get to see in advance from US for TVs and the like, it's worth it.

But yeah, if you can afford the step up, you have to reach for the HD58X or the HD6XX. Otherwise I'd recommend people chance their arm at Chi-Fi, here's my current recommendation:

Better still when there's a good cashback code active for AliE, but think Grado RS2e or better in terms of sound quality.

That's interesting. maybe they're good for gaming?

          • @[Deactivated]: Hahah they are fully open back, so no go for a LAN cafe. XD

If you've ever used the very high end Grados, these are supposed to be like that (the low-end ones can be quite scratchy on the treble). These are my go-to headphones for music and movies, and are solid for gaming. They are definitely not the kind of fashion statement you want to make in a public place though.

Check them out thoroughly as the replacement period is very short. One thing I've noticed is the inconsistency that can happen with the foam/cloth covering the driver: make sure it has a consistency similar to the foam ear pads (and ask for an extra pair of pads at purchase). If it feels more like velcro, flag the return immediately.

I’ve got the HD660’s, HD6xx and HD58x. Have also had and sold the HD600’s and HD598’s, but I really wish I’d kept the 598’s around. They’re the easiest to drive and were great for gaming (better than any of the 6 series for gaming).

      • Agree on the rest, but the HD58X should be fine to drive, and the tuning is competitive against this for gaming purposes.

If you want something more analytical for competitive gaming, you probably shouldn't be targeting Sennheiser's in the first place. ;)

Depends on the source obviously, and certainly not from something like a Dualshock 4 controller, which my 598's had no issue with.

That's the problem with recommending someone stretch their budget to something like the 58x/6xx. You need, or need to be prepared to also invest in a decent amp, otherwise you're wasting your money.

I disagree completely, but you're making assumptions on my preferences - using terms like analytical and competitive gaming. Fun, immersive and enjoyment are terms I prefer over analytical and competitive.

          • @aja12: Competitive gaming (detecting footsteps, not getting your ears rattled by gunfire) tends to want treble and some parts of the mids to sit a tiny bit boosted compared to the rest of the curve, which the 600 and 500s are not well known for.

For those of us who can't reach for the 700s or higher, there's a tendency to push into IEMs or headphones that are far more neutral.

700's? I don't know too many people that aspired to own the 700's lol. There's a reason they were discontinued last year.

Dude, I'm not into "competitive gaming" shooters. That's what I was getting at.

      • The 598s are great. I've regretted I didn't get one when they were so cheap at $130. The 599s are not so much of an improvement but are indeed great headphones.

Just ordered after doing a bit of research. I've been using speakers exclusively for years but recent circumstances has left me without a decent listening space and I'm itching; Had HD600s before and they were… "nice", but a bit boring for certain genres. Price difference and more traditional sound signature sold me on the Jubilee but I'm still not entirely sure I can go back. Thanks :)

  • HD58X sound much better imo
