They will give them for free at train stations soon and spy on people and listen their recordings. They admitted that they listen to 0.2% of the recordings lol

    • …because your phone and PC/MAC doesnt do that already.

They do listen to some recordings to apparently improve the AI (doubt thats the entire truth) but you have to Opt in/out for that to happen.

      • +3

My mic on pc is on headphones and only ON when playing games and no cam and planning on moving to linux soon.

        • +6

Have you not had a conversation with a mate, unlocked your phone and mysteriously see a related ad on FB/IG/etc?! They are always listening lol.

          • @ExtraSalt: Yes alot of times lol mostly on fb though. I stopped checking fb slowly and i log in once or twice a week at most nowadays. Reddit gives me all news/entertainment i need :D

        • @GeniusEvil Paranoid much? Why do you think you are so important?

      • +1

they got stung recording people without the use of the trigger phrase. google said it was a software bug that got patched but more recordings have recently surfaced in the netherlands.

        • +2

Recordings from a contractor who leaked them illegally. His job was to listen to garbled voice commands and teach the AI to understand them. He leaked them to a news outlet and showed them the software he uses to improve the voice commands. Google have acknowledged this and have their security team investigating. That guy is gonna get into a lot of trouble. It's not really Google's fault is it.

        • +1

Total mis-representation. They didn't get "stung" for anything.

          Here's what actually happened:
          1. A software bug in the Google Home Mini meant that pre-release devices had lots of false-positive triggers from the touch sensor on top of the device. Google immediately investigated, the problem was patched out prior to the official release (at the expense of a feature, mind you) and current models don't have this issue.
          2. A contractor paid by Google to transcribe anonymous random recordings to improve the AI leaked information about the contents of private recordings, despite a confidentiality clause that should have prevented him from doing so. He's probably going to be prosecuted or sued for his breach, but somehow it's Google's fault.

Everyone knows (or should know) that recordings of user's voice commands are saved by Google for a period of time. You can listen to all of your own recordings at any time, and delete them if you wish.

These devices are still prone to false triggers from time to time, like all voice assistants are.

        • -1

I've never come across long conversations or personal details in my years of contracting for a similar company to google. It's nothing to worry about.

    • +8

      Storm in a teacup.

Of course they manually check recordings. In order to check and improve the accuracy of the AI, somebody needs to transcribe a few random recordings and compare them to what the AI "heard"….especially in non-English languages they've launched relatively recently. It's one of the reasons why Google Assistant is far and away the best voice assistant.

Nobody should be surprised by this. How else could it possibly work?

      • Ya i know but instead of listening to peoples recording they should hire group of people and pay them to talk some shit and do that.

        • +7

Sure, that could also work. I wouldn't mind betting they also use this method….but it's still artificial.

Using truly random real-world data from of actual users is the best way of ensuring quality improvements are made.

Google have done the right thing by ensuring their contractors have obligations to keep user data safe and private. It's the contractors breaching those obligations who should be copping the outrage.

Google is selling these devices cheap because they want market penetration and to cross-sell their ecosystem. Accusations of "spying" are over-blown hysteria.

          • +1

@klaw81: Agree, the commercial value of retaining users in their ecosystem is worth so much more than anything they could do to exploit people. In this rare case, you need to trust capitalism to look after you!

        • sorta agree with this, but thats what they would've already done at the start when coding this AI. real-world will always be better and more accurate than theoretical &controlled environments.

    • +1

I, like Google, do so desperately want to know what you talk about. It must be awesome.

    • You make it sound like people dont have mobile phones, becuase what you say and your location isnt recorded on them

  • +1

Thanks Op, bought one for one of the kids bedrooms.
    Limit to one per customer.

      • +12

….for having posted 250 more deals than you?!

        • +1

Thanks for the support, OzBargain is a great community and just happy helping my fellow bargainers find those deals and lighten the wallets… :D

  • Ordered one too, free shipping makes the world of difference

  • Has anyone had experience of the home mini vs. echo dot 3rd gen? Latter can link into apple music

    • +2

Mostly very similar capabilities, similarly mediocre sound quality. Google Assistant (IMO) is better than Alexa, and works with Google Cast as well as BT input.

Probably depends on which ecosystem(s) you're already in.

Has anyone found a use for multiple of these?

I keep one in the bathroom because sound quality isn't a big thing for me when I'm showering or focusing on getting ready. Otherwise I just find the sound on this model too lacking.

I have one in my eldest daughter's bedroom which I use to play lullabies with a timer when she goes to bed. Bought a second one to do the same with my other daughter. And she sometimes puts Disney music on if she's playing or reading in the room.

      • +1

How do you do lullabies with a timer?

        • +2

I have Spotify linked to my home account, so I just ask it to play a lullabies playlist, then ask to turn music off after X minutes. For some reason I need to do this in 2 commands.

The playlist we are using at the moment is called "Disney lullabies".

    • +1

Really only useful for Home Automation in multiples. Unless upu want recipes in the kitchen, kids music in the playroom, sleeping music for the puppy, and one next to ur bed to answer all the random questions that pop into your head at night :D
