Really feel the regular switch is worth paying the extra $50ish for. This is smaller, but still won't fit in a pocket.

..but man the teal color is pretty

    • +1

Agree this lite version should be around 50% less than original

      • Looks a fair bit smaller to me. I very rarely play mine docked but the kids play it 2 player with the joycons taken off

Not sure where your cost assumptions of Nintendo's production are coming from, but in the HN deal you said it should be 40-45% cheaper. A few more deal posts and you'll be claiming it should be free.

    • +1

Yeah expected this to be cheaper, but then rrp on the full switch is quite a bit more .. not everyone pays OzB prices for their stuff. I’d certainly get the full Switch over this as current pricing.

    • +2

I agree the regular Switch is much better value and the better buy for most people (at least here in Australia). Even if this Lite is aimed at kids - my 7yo still prefers to play on the big TV at times so I'm not really sure if the lite is worth all the comprise, especially at $329

    • +5

That’s comparing RRP to sale price though. The RRP difference is relatively substantial. I’m sure in a few months this will be available on sale for much less than RRP.

I think this looks perfect for a household that may have multiple switches, particularly for kids where the seconds intended for road trips etc. Likely this will be more sturdy due to the fixed controllers. Had my son not got a Switch last year we likely would have considered this for him given mine sits on the TV generally.

Cash rewards would make it effectively $270.

    • No. Cashback on electronics is more like 3.5%.

      • 4.5% on shopback = $284.59 total.

      • It’s displaying as 10% on my screen

        • Would be "up to" and you need to look at the terms to see the % by category.

@ozbjunkie: Ok, thanks for pointing that out, unfortunately I can’t correct my original comment

Nintendo has filed the Nintendo pro as slight hardware upgrade only. You can look it up online so yea keep your imagination in check please.

      • That’s not the rumoured pro, it’s a hardware tweak to the existing model just as every console has slight tweaks to components over time. Some have suggested they’re just streamlining the chips between the Lite and the existing model.

A “Pro” would have more significant features and require a new FCC filing. The changes Nintendo have asked for are so insignificant they’re asked for an exemption for recertification.

The submission Nintendo made is closer to the Jasper Xbox 360 model than a major release like the Xbox 360 slim. The Pro would me more of a step, like the “new” 3DS was to the 3DS.

        • A new FCC filing would mean a design upgrade as well which we might not see with Switch Pro but it might be far off in the future to be announced with Xbox Two and PS5.

Kinda hard to tell what they will do.

    • +1

Got a source for that or are you talking out of your ass?

      • +1

        The latter.

    • +4

      The Pro/Home/Basic
Really covering all your bases there with this guesswork huh? You should work for Forbes.

If it was $200 then I’ll buy one

    • +2

If it was $50 Id buy 5…

    • It will be a happy Christmas 2021 for you, then.

At these prices, might as well get the original Switch, or wait for the next iteration.

  • Everyone seems to be missing the point of this, yes of course you can spend a bit extra and get the original, but this is perfect for kids.

Without the detachable Joy-Cons there is less to lose/break, and being smaller is easier to take in the car etc.

It replaces the 3ds and isn't aimed to be better than the original switch it's just another option in the lineup.

    • +4

Which would make sense if it didn't cost the best part of $300 and had a battery life better than 30 minutes longer on average comapred to the 2 a bit year old original.

    • This is true. Let's just hope that they have reworked the joycons controllers enough (or have completely new/different tech in them) to fix the drift issues that plague the regular Switch.
I'm sure once they realise that it's a little expensive like the 3DS was on release we will see them drop the RRP to $279 and we will pick them up for $220.
