Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today introduced support for Free to Play (F2P) Games on Steam with the launch of five F2P games.

Beginning today with Spiral Knights and concluding Sunday with AVA, each of the five launch titles will offer exclusive in-game content to those who try the "F2P game of the day" on Steam. In game transactions in all of the titles will be supported by Steam's micro-transaction backend system that is available to Steamworks partners and currently used in Valve's Team Fortress 2.

Specific details on the F2P games of the day and their exclusive in-game content will be made available in the coming days.

I'm confused. It's free just for the day, free forever, or free forever IF you claim it today?

EDIT: Or it's basically subsidized by in game purchases of avatars and garbage?

    • "In game transactions in all of the titles will be supported by Steam's micro-transaction backend system that is available to Steamworks partners and currently used in Valve's Team Fortress 2."

Seems like if you want to get anything in the game (weapons etc?) beyond the basics you need to pay through micro-transactions.

Short answer: They are taking already available F2P games and putting them on Steam.

So now Steam can take a cut of the F2P-pie. Yay Steam?

The trending word for this is "Free-mium".

Yes, all these F2P games basically earn revenue by enticing you with in game micro-transactions. Steam takes a cut if it goes through their micro-transactions system.

Forsaken world looks good, might give that a try. :)

  • Dont end up spending hundreds on in-game items guys :)

But they were on sale for 50% off!!! :p

  • Combat Arms is F2P, graphically pleasing for such low requirement and a fun to play first person shooter. It's an alternative to Alliance of Valliant Arms. There's lots of customisation, hundreds of weapons and gear. I have been playing it since April this year, and I don't intend to pay money as skills and ingame money can get you very far. The downside is you need to be aware of hackers in some rooms (such as opk and aimbots), and know when to leave. I don't think many people here knows of this game. Any CA players here?

I used to play CA, but hackers made me quit. It got to the point where it was a game of "who can hack the hardest", and regular players like me were just fodder.

      • Steam could end up benefiting the game then - if you get caught cheating on Steam, the consequences for your account can be pretty dire. Your whole account, not just the one game.

Of course, people can always make dummy Steam accounts to play F2P games…

        • Is this forcing everyone to have a Steam account though? If the games are still playable through the previous service/methods, then any 'hackers' are just going to continue to use those systems.

        • Good point - I assume that only Steam players will be able to play on Steam servers, but that may not be the case.

  • Free to start playing but in most games you can get an advantage by paying real money. Some only claim money to have cosmetic benefits but that's for the players to decide.

    • I actually really enjoyed Spiral Knights method - you get 'energy' that is used whenever you access a level or use a trade skill. Each level uses ~10 energy, and you can store a maximum of 100, which regens in 24 hours.

So, for a free game, you got to play approx. 10 levels per day, which was easily 1-2 hours. Great time waster. :P

  • Sweet, I've been playing spiral knights for a couple of weeks now. Good to see it on Steam.

  • Forsaken worlds is a pretty good game, been playing for a couple of days now. It's kinda like casual version of WoW. However I don't see it on the steam list?

Spiral knight looks likes a good arcade style mmo, wonder if I should try it.

    • Funny, but i saw it on the list this morning, now it's gone :(

      • Still listed in the FAQ: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8795-TID…

What games on Steam are Free-to-Play?
The following titles are now available on Steam Free-to-Play:
        Alliance of Valiant Arms
        Champions Online: Free for All
        Forsaken World
        Global Agenda: Free Agent
        Spiral Knights

        Edit: When I try to visit the Forsaken World on Steam via Chrome I get the following;

This item is currently unavailable in your region

Anyone want to try it via a tunnel and report back?

    • does anyone know how we get it for free? seems on youtube ppl have been downloading it for free too

      • +1

Well if it's not on Steam, you can still download it from http://fw.perfectworld.com/download.. It is a free game.

        • nvm it re-appeared in steam store today and download was 4.2gb

          cools

  • Meh, these pathetic games are free for a reason.

  • I recommend getting Champions Online because it started off using a subscription model you can still get a lot of enjoyment and playtime out of it without paying a cent. I've got about 3 months of casual playtime out of it and haven't felt a need to buy anything, possibly because PvP's not a big part of it.
