So it's slightly quieter than S5, and only costs $450 more.

    • +8

$600 more if you scored on eBay Deal weekend ;)
      Glad I grabbed the S5

      • How's the mop on the S5? I'm still rocking the 1st Gen xiaomi vac, not sure if is worth upgrading to the S5.

        • It's just cold water on a cloth. Does an okay job for very light cleanup. Have to run on a separate mode to vacuum though.

        • As good as dragging a wet cloth on the floor.

      • I'm trying to grab S50, but can't find any :( Any advice of how were you looking for it?

  • Yeaowch!

  • So what justifies the doubling in price compared to second gen Roborock? I.e. What are the main differences…

    • +1

      Quieter, better mopping function.

Also some software changes that were promised for the S5 but will not be retrofitted. This is the ability to save floor plans (eg, if you move the vacuum between two floors).

      • +19

At this price, if you need that functionality, it's cheaper to just buy a second S5 for Upstairs!

        • +2

I just move the robot upstairs and don't care about the mapping. I have no carpet so maybe the reason

        • for such a difference it should GO UPSTAIRS by itself

      • +1

The save map function has been released in beta form for the S50. Not sure how it's supposed to work but I have it enabled. I recall reading that the s6 would climb higher thresholds (3.5cm - which would be perfect for my needs) but can't see any difference in recent specs (2cm). The gen 1 couldn't climb over my doorways.

      • I have the s50 from the ebay sale. Got to say I'm super impressed by the suction and how much it actually picks up.

Much less impressed by the mapping function. It's been on a cleaning run about a dozen times and is yet to properly map the house. Often it will lose its bearings and start mapping a place its already been at say a 30 degrees offset. Then it can't find its way home because there will be a wall in its way. There's no way tell it to save a particular map over another and no way to tweak a map. It seems to function better without the map saving. It would be great if we get an updated firmware.

Other super annoying issue is that I have 6 xiaomi smart plugs but they only work with the China server and the vacuum will only work on any server BUT china so I need to run two phones with two apps.

        • +1

My Mum's has the same issue, I suspect it's due to dead spots in her WiFi. (don't forget the vacuum is far lower than your typical WiFi devices)
Mine has no such troubles, but our WiFi coverage is far superior.

          • +1

@ESEMCE: I have great wifi but I do have two access points and I don't think the vacuum switches between them well. I think the real issue is that the map feature is in beta and it sounds as though it will stay that way forever. Not sure if those expensive brands have better software or not though because everything else about the xiaomi is great.

            • @Drj55: I also have 2 AP's sharing the same SSID and Password.
Even so it frequently complains about poor network connection if I'm tracking its progress in the app.
Despite that, ours never gets lost, even when I've physically moved it to a different room for a spot cleanup it still happily works out its location and navigates home after job completion (on more than one occasion).
I've even taken it out to the shed to do a cleanup and its found its location and naviogated back to dock in the house.

My Mum's on the other hand can forget its location in the middle of a cleanup, stopped dead in the room, but it always does so in areas that are distant from the Modem.

If it's not the WiFi, I have no idea.

              • @ESEMCE: Wow that is not my experience. You said you put it outside and it tracked its way back to base? How is that even possible with triangulation of the wifi signal??

                • @Drj55: I think it uses the sensors (lidar?) to detect where the walls are and matches that to its internally stored map. If I pick it up and move it a short distance away, it spins and works out where its new location is. Once it gets near the base, it uses some sorta (led?) sensor to precisely dock. I've turned off the base before it returns and it gets near the base, then wildly circles the proximity before leaving the room!

I've also moved close-by furniture as it vacuums and it gets confused by the "moving walls".

                  • @skid: If I pick it up and move it mid sweep it still thinks its in the previous location Then when it come across a wall that shouldn't be there according to its map it tries and tries to go around it. Then it seems to get quite confused and zig zags for a bit and gives up.

Also I've had it in the same pantry as the dock and not be able to find it.

Just to help me here: what server do you connect to? Australia? Also can you find out what firmware you have? I think different firmware available on different regions.

                    Thanks!

                    • @Drj55: I'm on 3.3.9_001633 connected to the Singapore server. It has the option to update to 3.3.9_001768. I figure if the robot is working as I like, I wouldn't need to update it. At the time I got it, there was no option for an Australian server.

I don't pick it up and move it while it is vacuuming. I only move it if it has paused, stopped or gone in error.

                      • @skid: There is something on the Xiaomi Facebook page that seems to say there is a problem with 1864 but it's pretty vague. I might try rolling back as my mapping is essentially broken whereas yours sounds excellent

                  • @skid: I'm on 3.3.9_001864.

Ask it to check for firmware updates it will tell you your current firmware.

                    Thanks

    • +3

from what I saw is a big upgrade in Smart Assistant integration, being able to label zones with names that can be voice commanded: "OK Google, Send vacuum to Kitchen" or something like that. The mop is also disposable pads now (not very sustainable).

Not sure what else is new, but doesn't seem revolutionary over the S5

edit: oh yeah quieter, and more efficient (unsure on how noticeable)

      • +4

"being able to label zones with names that can be voice commanded"

That would be nice, and a bit mean if they won't update the software to enable the S5 to do it.

        • +1

Be careful with that assumption. My understanding is that voice supoort will be extended to the xiaomi app, not necessarily to google assistant or alexa. In fact google assistant may be removed.

          • @bargainshooter: it's been talked about for the extra google assistant support to be coming to the S5, then held off for the S6. I'd be very surprised if they go backwards and remove it altogether. But yes, it's all assumption as have not seen any reviews on it prooving it's use

      • Already doing that with gen1 and openhab. I think there also other hacks out there to achieve the same. If someone is willing to invest some time can achieve amazing things and also save some money.

    • +5

More efficient in cleaning and battery life, improved main and side brush, couple more app functions - check out robot wars on youtube. Worth double the price over 2nd Gen - nope. IMO, you would rather have 2 x S50's (i.e. 1 for second floor or one that does mopping) than 1 x S60.

    • The mop component no longer blocks the vacuum brush - apparently can do both without swapping the mop component.

      • Except that vacuuming wet floors makes a mess rather than cleans it. So it'd still need to do one then the other

  • +6

Wowsers. My gen 1 is awesome, but a lot of the appeal was a great until for around $300… this is well and truely outside of impulse buy territory.

  • Official as in part of Beijing Roborock Technology Co., Ltd?

      https://roborock.com.au/pages/about-us

      Looks like it.

      Not Roboguy in disguise.

      • +1

was gonna say. avoid if Roboguy

      • Anyone can copy/paste. Heaps of Xiaomi stores did it prior to their official entry.

Edit: Checked with Roborock and they're the real deal! An official distributor.

      • Get your hands on the robotic vacuum that will transform your home!

I see what you did there…

definitely not the roborock in china if they have changed their name multiple times

          • @warhunter: Official distributor according to Roborock. It's like the official Xiaomi Australia is run by Panmi Pty Ltd.

            • @Clear: https://connectonline.asic.gov.au/RegistrySearch/faces/landi…

they are definitely not panmi pty ltd. its subemo pty ltd. address matches their website. they changed their names multiple times.

              • @warhunter: I didn't say they were Panmi Pty Ltd. Instead comparing how 3rd party companies are being named distributors.

Subemo Pty Ltd is the official distributor of Roborock in Australia.

Panmi Pty Ltd is the official distributor of Xiaomi in Australia.

                • @Clear: I see. I sent their chinese office an email to verify. see how it goes.

                  • @warhunter: I emailed their sales and they confirmed they're the real deal.

  • +3

The S5 would probably still be good value at $800 - $1000. It's that good.

This $450 jump in price is a bit hard to stomach.

  • +7

    lol this is ozbargain

  • +8

the reason people jumped on the Xiaomi vacuum cleaner is that they provide good value for money. but $1000.. let me think twice.

    • dyson will have one for $2000

      • +1

        they do have one.
        https://www.amazon.com/Dyson-360-Eye-Robot-Vacuum/dp/B01IBRF…
        not very good from memory

        • Ohh wow!

      • Who buy Dyson 360? It needs to compare the models which provides equivalent features with Xiaomi. Dyson 360 is out of scope.

just googled Roomba i7+ is $1340 without automatic dirt disposal.
        https://www.selfridges.com/AU/en/cat/irobot-roomba-i7-robot-vacuum-cleaner_314-3006185-I7158/?cm_mmc=PLA--GoogleAU--HOMETECH-_-IROBOT&gclid=CjwKCAjwsIbpBRBNEiwAZF8-z9AtaYtN9urH39oDHnPHt3MvBbE77LttuWtZJ8h7wcjhquXXanFI7hoCNEsQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

also Roomba provides a quite good warranty service compared to Xiaomi in Australia. once a motor and a LDR sensor is broken, who takes care of the warranty service?

what about Qihoo 360? People in China compare Qihoo 360 to Xiaomi Vacuum. they are quite cheaper than Xiaomi. also It supports more feature like mapping rooms Xiaomi S6 does

    • +1

Well there's a Roomba for $1900 now so I guess this S6 is relatively good value. Right?

I think I'll stick with my Gen 1 for now. I'll spend $1K when it can vacuum my stairs

      • You have to compare Roomba i7+ only which is $1340 roughly now. $1900 includes the automatic dirt disposal which is much higher spec than the xiaomi s6. I am a Xiaomi S5 user though.

  • A broom, mop and bucket costs about $980 less than this and has the added advantage of free exercise.

    • +9

      how much is time

      • Stop watching MAF's and clean your house.

    • +10

You appreciate time more when you have kid(s)

  • I love my v1 roborock, but my next vacuum will prob be the 360 S7.

    https://smart.360.cn/cleanrobot/en/s7/index.html

the older S6 has lots of good reviews

    • +1

That looks like an exact replica of the Xiaomi?

    • 360 S7 looks like the roborock S5 as far as features and build. The 360 ones are generally the cheaper version of the Roborocks though right? The 360 s6 was like the roborock s50 but not as good, and price reflected that.

      • the 360 S6 seems to have lots of positive reviews. the battery seems a lot smaller than roborock. the software features look better on the 360. anyway, will wait and see. I expect it to be a lot cheaper than the latest roborock- I'm also disappointed that roborock pulled the expected/ promised updates for the V2, and are trying to force everyone to get the V3 instead- a bit slimy for my liking…..

  • Slightly cheaper here?
And ships in next few days https://www.gearbest.com/vacuum-cleaners/pp_009308419160.htm…

    • About the same price once you factor in shipping and the $100 mastercard - but:

      • EU plug
      • No local support
      • The one above includes a few extra parts/consumables

      Thanks

  • +1

Don’t think this is a bargain. It’s a new version but surely $1000 is a bit too much for just added functions like vac and mop at the same time. Gen 2 for around $400 will do almost exactly that with $600 less.

    • +10

It's a deal if it's less than it usually is, it's a bargain if it's less than it's worth.

      • Ooh, I'm stealing this.

        • +1

googles how to copyright and sell back to OzBargain for profit

      • Got off the couch, plugged in the keyboard, signed in, just to say 'thanks man, thats beautiful'

    • +4

Neg me but imo bargain is not just about money, I also compare what’s out there specification wise, price wise, function wise etc then if it’s still a winner from its competitors THEN it’s called a bargain.

      • I feel ya. If it had an apple logo you'd be getting a pat on the back… OzBargain is a funny place…

  • wohoooo a thousand dolla robot

    • +1

And it's still far cheaper than mainstream competitors. Crazy.

  • +2

For people ask how to justify the price difference between this one and it's predecessor s5. Simple answer you can't.

It's retailed for around $550 in Chinese market. Add GST and other fees you can imagine. It should be no more than $700.

So real sense price is $700. $200 more than s5 with improved mapping system, higher (?) Climbing ability and a better mop feature.

    • About the same cost - at discount - from an Asian seller.

      https://www.gearbest.com/vacuum-cleaners/pp_009308419160.htm…

You may be able to get one cheaper if shipping to China - but there are software issues with non-international versions (ie. T6).

So - this is not a bad price and is cheaper than you can get it anywhere else - that is not grey marketed.

      • -1

I don't agree buying it from China site directly as you mentioned it is a non-international version. It only works with the China server. I would expect someday if Australia has a privacy policy like GDPR of Europe, the China sever could ban the Australia traffics without notice.

also, the China server has already banned non-international version. I got a xiaomi gateway which is registered to the China server and all related gadget depends on it. but someday, the china server just banned my new Xiaomi S5 vacuum cleaner which is an internaional version. so I have to switch two servers (China and Australia) to add/setup devices. furthermore, they did not provide any migration service among servers. It is very annoying and frustrated.

  • +2

    What?$999 for Xiaomi?
I have 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Xiaomi robot vacc. I am totally satisfied but at $999, I don't think they will make a good sales volume for it.

  • +1

I have the 1st gen and it's awesome. Can't imagine you'd need much better. I mean it cleans the house when you aren't home, it can watch TV if it wants, as long as it's vacuumed while I'm at work

  • +1

Version 1 all the way IMO. Can sometimes get it for $315 from gearbite.

  • +2

At $999, they are dreaming. This is just marginally better than the S5. I won't spend more than $450.

  • +1

    tell them they’re dreaming

  • Massive markup by "roborock Australia". Really not a bargain. But from China if you really want the 5% increase in ability over S5

  • +1

I've got no doubt this vac will be good, I have the S50 and it's by far one of the best purchases I've made BUT from everything im reading and reviews I've seen it's only mildly better than its predecessor (S50) so how can they justify the extra $450???. The price point is the main reason I jumped onto it, awesome reviews, great performance and all for a decent price, win win! But when you start stepping into the $1000 market you will find a whole lot more people who will not be interested OR who simply can't stomach that kind of price when their current one does nearly the exact same job. Hope this price gouging doesn't last long.

  • +1

Is the mopping function really worth it.

Can get 360S5 (pretty much same as 360S7, but no mopping) delivered approx. $500. New 360S5 has the latest software for additional maps, zones, etc.
