As the title says, the Nest Hello video doorbell is on sale at BHPhotoVideo (US Store) for $189.25usd (approx $270aud) delivered. Shipping is with DHL.

I don't own any video doorbells as yet, but based on my reading, the Nest Hello is arguably the top video doorbell on the market currently. Nest is also owned by Google.

Note that this is a wired doorbell, not wirefree.

is this something we need to worry abt installing this might void home insurance? since these are not locally certified?

    • +1

I think that was the nest smoke alarms, but thats not the case any more with the updated version. Camera's can't void your home insurance

      • -1

he's talking about the power wiring requirement for this

  • -1

Just make sure this isn't a 110v device configured for the US and Japanese markets.

    • +5

it runs off your doorbell transformer, not mains

  • +9

These are amazing. Best purchase I've ever made.

    • The quality is outstanding, something you want in a video surveillance system. The HDR video makes a massive difference in harsh sunlight.
    • Paying for the subscription is definitely worth it for access to the footage but also facial recognition which other devices do not have. It knows when there's an actual person and not just detecting generic "movement".
    • Linking to Google homes means you don't need a doorbell, they act as the doorbell and tell you who is at the door. The feed pops up on the home hub screen.

You'll need a 24v AC power transformer. This one from Jaycar is recommended
    https://www.jaycar.com.au/mains-adaptor-24vac-1a-unregulated…

    Definitely recommended

Thanks for the insight, very informative

I got all this with Ring Pro little less from Amazon sale.

      • +2

Correct me if I'm wrong. But the Ring Pro doesn't have facial recognition and connect to google homes..?

        • -1

ring and nest both connect to google home hub etc

        • +1

Sorry it doesn't do the facial recognition and that doesn't matter to me since these days people who I knows rather stand front of the house and ring me than ringing the door bell.

      • Does Ring Pro work
        with Google Hub?

        • Ring is an Amazon company, so would work well with Alexa. Probably some Google functionality, but not as much as Alexa.

        • +1

Don't buy Ring if your intention is to work with Google hub, staying home and waiting for someone to ring your door bell. But for me most of the time when it rings, I'm away and answering by phone. Maybe I need friends. 😆

    • Hey thanks for your comment. Just a quick question, will that transformer from JayCar all I'll need to hook into the doorbell? I'm not sure where I read from before but I thought you also need some kind of hardwired chime?

      Cheers!

      • Yes that's all you need to power the doorbell. You can use Google homes as a chime, or if you don't have them around the house. People recommend the Honeywell D117 Ding Dong door chime. I've seen similar ones on eBay for around $30

        • Will 24vac transformer you mentioned previously work with D117? Seems it only supports 8v up to 16v with max 15w. Just afraid the transformer will blow out the chime. Should this be a better choice? https://www.jaycar.com.au/16v-ac-1-25-amp-alarm-power-supply…

          • @yedwh: It's what people have recommended. From memory, the 24v is within the chimes tolerance.

there's a big thread on it on whirlpool where people have tried different combinations, good to read.

        • What is your recommendation for installation if you need a much longer transformer cable? (~4-5m to power outlet)

          • @ttam87: I don't think the voltage will drop noticeably with 5m. The standard wire length on the transformer is already 3m, another 2m wouldn't affect it.

            • @Windows98: Oh sorry, im a noobie with this stuff. I meant, how do you extend the cable length? The link says the cable is 1.8m long.

              • +1

@ttam87: Oh. At jaycar you can buy some extra length wire, crimping bits and tool. The guys there will be able to help you out with the right stuff.

Have you had any problems with this American release on an Australian Google account? With an Australian credit card? Does it integrate with the Australian Nest line?

      Thanks

      • No issues at all with it being the us model. There's no other model available anyway. The ones being sold by Kogan are the same unit. No issues integrating, I had a normal nest camera and also have a nest thermostat, all work under the same app properly.

No issues with signing up. It's slow and people always complain about issues with signing up to Nest aware. I had delay issues and had to re do it. But that had nothing to do with the different countries.

Thanks for the review mate. I have a couple of questions after reading online reviews:

      1. How long is your lag time from motion being detected to you being alerted? (Not from the doorbell button press which should be almost instantaneous)
      2. Do you know what your approx 'cool down' period is for alerts? (The minimum time period between your received alerts).
        1. Motion detection notification is much the same as doorbell. I usually see the notification for motion as they walk down the driveway before they get to press the doorbell

        2. Unsure about the time between notifications, a few minutes at least. I go out to empty the bin and onto get one notification when walking past the first time.

        • Thanks for the quick reply! Much appreciated.

    • +1

What's the delay like bringing it up on the home hub?

      • +2

        4 seconds or so

  • Is tax included in the price?

  • Any idea what the normal price is? And seems to be the cheapest it's been?

We are still building our house so not in a rush, but maybe should grab now?

    • I would grab it. It's much cheaper than the local pricing and doesn't appear to be being replaced by a new model anytime soon.

I paid 290 delivered from a us seller earlier this year and was stoked with the price

  • I paid ~250 last year from newegg

With the home hub this is awesome.

    • Will this even show on chrome cast?

      • Yes you can ask your google assistant to stream the doorbell to your Chromecast.

It won't pop up automatically when rung like a hub does though.

  • +3

That's a good price, I have one and it's been great.
I chose this over the ring due to the fact I use google homes and set notifications to them so I don't need a chime.
It is also linked to my lenovo google home so the video pops up when someone rings the bell, it'll also announce who is at the door if you've set the recognised person and pay the subscription.

I installed a plug socket near the door (indoors) and ran this https://www.jaycar.com.au/mains-adaptor-24vac-1a-unregulated… and it runs beautifully.
I think it needs the transformer as I believe many older australian doorbell wires don't supply enough/correct voltage.

  • Can anyone recommend an adaptor that's 10 metres ( may be able to get away with 5 metres) in length?

    • +2

      for me

i just ran a pair of cables across 20 metres into a power box and used the jaycar transformer everyone has posted about

  • -2

Price just went down to USD$169

    • Nice

    • +2

Yep thats right. Plus the minimum delivery cost to AUS is US$20. So the total will be US$189 delivered.

  • +2

Thanks OP, been waiting for these to come back on special!

For anyone interested, it's only an extra USD$0.76 for express shipping.

    • Got so excited I made the n00b mistake of paying via paypal & copping their currency conversion. Doh!! AUD$280.62 shipped for me :(

  • I had a Ring before, 1st version, loved it despite it's flaws.

Fun fact, the Ring was initially pitched to Shark Tank (US) as the Door Bot, but a deal wasn't struck. Branson then invested in it, and it was later bought out by Amazon for a cool billion dollars.

    • I'm assuming rich people in the US have a gated entrance with 2 way audio doorbells, which is probably answered by a butler.

  • +1

    Thanks OP!

  • Is there any video doorbell that works when the internet is down? Or there is no internet but just a Wi-Fi network?

  • +2

hey guys I was really considering buying this over the ring 2 doorbell but they don't cover you for a replacement if its stolen.

This replacement policy applies to customers who have installed Nest Hello in the United States and Canada.

    • Contents insurance should cover theft of your doorbell. Although if you have an excess higher than the price of the doorbell, then the insurance is useless.

  • How much Data is it using/month?
Do I have to worry about my upload speed since this doorbell
is constantly uploading HD video to the Nest servers?
    I’m on Optus cable (100Mbps DOWN/ 1.2 Mbps UP)

    • +1

Fellow Optus cable user here. I wouldn't bother with this or any other video doorbell that "uploads to the cloud" until you get onto nbn with faster upload speeds. At best it will work, but reduce the quality of the video to the point where the video will be barely usable. Personally I'm waiting for it to be officially supported in Australia - I expect that I'll be on the nbn by then. Maybe. ;-)

  • +1

Thanks OP, got this to replace my first gen Ring. Should go nice with the Home Hub and Mini's in the house.

    • I'm really considering it but the subscription is pretty expensive compared to the ring ones.

      • Yeh its a bit annoying. Nest has familiar face alerting though (with a subscription), which is something Ring doesnt have. It learns faces and can announce who is at the door after some learning time. That alone wouldnt be worth the difference in subscription cost anyway in my opinion.

      • Fair call. I already have other Nest cams on a subscription so I believe I get a discount on the doorbell one.
