1024 x 600, still good price given the specification

  • up to 13 hours battery life, what battery does this come with ?

    • Asus makes impressive claims about the battery life; allegedly the 5,200mAh, 56Wh unit should be good for up to 11 hours. In our testing, however, it gave considerably less than this, managing just over six hours with a video looped at 50 percent screen brightness.

      http://www.trustedreviews.com/Asus-Eee-PC-Seashell-1015PEM_L…

      • 6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,63W/h)/13hrs*
        6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,56W/h)/11hrs*
        6-cell Li-ion Battery Pack (6cells,48W/h)/10hrs*

the 'up to' battery time normally means the system is idle and doing nothing if not just boot up to the BIOS then do a battery run.
56W/s 6hrs is expected for the test you did, the N550 is a dual core processor and has a TDP 8.5W which is higher than these N4** single core processor.

So who knows what battery does this Harvey Norman one come with?

      • In fairness to Asus though, running a video in loop for 6 hrs probably doesn't represent what the average user will do this with netbook. Based on that assumption I'd still expect >8hrs for average use.

      • What Asus or any other laptop makers calim is usually the Wi-Fi connected net surfing + document
so 6 hours video playback on loop is pretty impressive.

        This is not an iPad

Amex card users could make this $199

    • +1

Is the amex card a one off or do you get 50 off every time?

      • +2

One off before 30 June for single transaction over $250 in these participated shops, Harvey Norman is in I think.

        • Is it still available?

        • you have to register so don't just rush into HN!

    • +4

      Amex is $250
      This is $249
How is this going to work?

    • Note the fine print says you have to be the primary card holder, only one deal per account and amount will appear as a credit to your account 4 - 6 weeks after promo is over.

    • I wonder if AMex do the prepaid cards…

  • +3

For everyones benefit, here is the ASUS eePC 105PEM link with the specifications.

Thing to note is that this model does not provide HDMI output and the resolution is 1024x600 - which is fine for normal browsing etc anyway.

  • ASUS listed:

    *1 : USB 3.0 x 2 + USB 2.0 x 1 or USB 2.0 x 3

so does Harvey Norman's one come with 2 USB 3.0+1 USB 2.0 or just 3 USB 2.0?

    • I reckon it's 3x USB 2.0

  • -4

have usb 3.0 and bluetooth is pretty good for the price.
in terms of performance, might be better to grab one that runs dual-core atoms.

  • +3

i dunno about this specific model but when i got my hp 110-3538 (with similar specs), it wasn't all that useable until i upped the ram to 2gb

these CPUs seem to bottle-neck to the extent that my old netbook with a n270 outperformed it - pretty well documented (on that model anyway)

that being said it might just be the HPs with this config but i thought i'd let you know anyway

    • I reckon that's the case with all Windows 7 computers in general - after putting all your usual programs on it you'll probably find that physical memory usage will sit very close to 1GB on a computer with that much RAM, at which point it will be using a part of the hard drive as memory. And hard drives are much, much slower than actual RAM!

I've always put in at least 2GB of RAM in whatever computer comes across me, even the cheaptastic netbooks. So what, RAM is cheap. :)

  • Sounds pretty awesome to me. Even if you only get 7hrs battery life with normal use, that's great.
Anyone know how easy it is to add ram? Is there a ram panel on the bottom, or do you have to open the thing up?

  • +9

I bought the previous one from the officeworks deal earlier this year and still haven't used it much. Damn, should have waited a little bit longer to buy this one and not use it.

Just went to Auburn store - as at 4pm they only had 8 left

im guessing it will take a 2gb ram kingston card? is that the max this can upgrade to?

    • +1

MSY had 2gb DDR3 SODIMMs for ~$21… Is that a typical price?

Does this netbook need any "fancier" flavor of SODIMM…?

And… Where can I read that for myself, ie, in ASUS doc'n?

  • -4

im guessing it will take a 2gb ram kingston card? is that the max this can upgrade to?

  • This is a great deal :)

I am typing on one atm which I bought back in November 2010 when they just came out

seeing this price makes me cry . just a little

adding the RAM was easy according to my husband, much easier than previous models

    that help?

    • thanks Natt. you wouldnt happen to know how much ram is in it? and how do you find it. quick enough for a small netbook?

  • damm the only thing stopping me getting this is the resoloution. I was looking for something a bit higher. Do you think it will make a difference for office and web browsing?

    • not at all man.

    • if you want something higher, you'll have to look at standard laptops. netbooks and tablets arent there yet nor do they really need something as high as this especially at the sizes you get them at.

      for portable uses, its great.

  • -3

Probably not as good a deal but found these options if people miss out:
    Acer AOD-255E Netbook $246 http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com…
    Msi L1350D Netbook $249: http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com…

    • +3

both of these two are single core Atom N455, can't compete with this dual core N550 on performance.

      • totally agree..

      • Fair enough, but how about OW's new catalog…

it seems to be showing Acer's Aspire One 257 (or similar)

Would THAT have a cpu in the N550 class, by any chance?

        It's price is comparable to HN's '1015PEM.

PS Wait… not all the pre-EoFY deals have been released (I hope!)

  • +1

Just bought one of these today

The dual core works much faster than i previously thought

  • +3

Man, the prices just keep on getting better & better! Hard to know when to buy one :P

Buy one when you need one.

      • Hard to know when you need one :P

  • good deal - got an Acer Aspire with similar specs to this a couple of months ago, works a treat. i paid $300 after $49 cashback. prices definitely on the downward trend!

  • some at Belrose none at Balgowlah.

    Thanx!

  • for those thinking of hackintosh, from what i can see there's problems getting kexts for this type of intel built in graphics. If anyone knows otherwise please advise.

  • +1

sweet, just registered my amex card, i hope i get my $50 rebate, otherwise still a great deal for $249.

  • Is this an in-store only deal? I'll have to call my local Harvey Norman store. Hope I'm not too late …

    • I'd say it is instore since some people have been posting here where its in/out of stock ;)

"Offer ends 3rd July 2011 or until sold, whichever occurs first."

      • Thanks for confirming that. I got one from Everton Park (Brisbane). I believe they have about 14 left in stock (according to "Natasha")

    Update for my post:

I did call Harvey Norman and found Martin Place had stock. So headed that way around 3 PM taking bus after asking them to hold one unit for me. Had to take hubby along as he was the AMEX main card holder. The config is certainly dual core - all installations went very well. The left button does a boot to some kind of linux making it faster startup. A smart button on left can also turn wifi and bluetooth off or on. The webcam on the windows side is very good, can be turned off with a button and has some overly cute features like adding extra graphics to your pic with the keys. The touch pad is great and the response is much better than my older Lenovo Ideapad S10-3. Son is planning to load ubuntu as he had done it in my Ideapad.

One gripe if you can call it that, is when I explained to the sales guy why I wanted the triple A batteries added to the total (to make it over the $250 mark) he got pushy and suggested that we go for the extra 2 yr warranty which he would discount to $50. While I was going to think it over for a second, hubby jumped in and took it. So we do have the exceeded price although additional warranty. As I registered AMEX before going, and received a confirmatory email, I don't anticipate problems.

    • thanks for this info - helps a lot

    • Thanks for the info. I just purchased the netbook from HN Queen St(Brisbane) an hour ago and paid $40 (was not $50) for two yr extra warranty to make it over $250- for AMEX promotion. Whne I rang before visiting HN, HN advised that there was only one $249 netbook left but they still had a few. The girl next to me did not buy it because she did not want to have black one.

  • On the offchance no one manages to Hackintosh this, what are HN's refund policies?

    • HN make it impossible to return anything, even if it's faulty or not fit for use (unless it's non-trivial, I once returned a $100 electric blanket), without taking them to court. If you buy this one for a Hackintosh, be prepared to eat the cost.

    • Didn't see it on ONE of several lists (ie, the last one in this list of links to lists of compatible netbooks, showing how compatible someone thinks they are):

  • Compared to the Acer AOD255D (mentioned in a greyed-out comment, above), the ASUS's of the past had much smaller chargers PLUS
nice short 240 VAC power cables.

    Acer's charger is much bulkier in transit & maybe even heavier;
in Summer, however, I wouldn't be surprised if it ran a -bit-
cooler… will have to wait for Summer to see… ;-)

Top RAM on all these puppies is 2 GB for those, who asked…

Compared to Eee PC 1001PX (which we got - with a scratched top -
from DSE in SA, some months ago) this one's battery has to add
to the weight; of course, the 1000PX has much shorter bat.life
    eg, 2-3 hours.

PS: All this reminds me that netbooks seem to be getting closer
& closer to OLPC (One Laptop Per child) prices…

Say, what's been happening with the OLPC, recently…? Anyone know?

  • last one sold at Auburn, to my old man. Good price for the spec.

  • Do you guys reckon this netbook is capable of Home Premium after upgrading the RAM?

Watch out for Bait & Switch tactics at Harvey's place:

I was with a friend, when she picked up her pre-reserved '1015PEM.
The clerk brought out a '1015B, & told her it was the same and the 'B' meant Black, as ordered.

If we hadn't checked the labels (both ASUS's & the shop's), she would have got an AMD cpu!

    Beware.

    • +1

That sounds like an incompetent sales person, not bait & switch.

      • +1

Another guy (showing ASUS netbooks to a black dude, from Africa, maybe) was showing SIMILAR looking models (eg, with R100 or R101, prefixes, or the like), which were sitting beside the '1015PEM price card, showing $249.

The guy was being told that the matte model was a 1015PEM, despite having a label indicating it had a N455 chip inside.

I just don't think they want to open (read: "waste") a new 1015PEM, so they show something else.

Hopefully, they bring 1015PEM's from the backroom…

It's easy enough: 1015PEM is printed in LARGER fonts than the (AMD-equipped?) 1015B that the guy brought out.

PS It took a bright, honest-looking guy (the 3rd we spoke to) to find & bring out some 1015PEM's…

I'm not so sure what the other sales people are thinking… but a bit more focus would help buyers thing more highly of H-N, I'm sure.

Maybe they're in need of some "Mystry Shoppers" ;-)

    • +1

      //=============
1015B is more than $400 and it has reasons.

Actually the 1015B is better than the 1015PEM if it does come with dual core AMD Apu C-50 but not the single core C-30 (which I can confirm last time I saw the 1015B at hardly normal it's C-50).
It has HDMI out, and can play 1080p full HD file without any problem.

"ATI Radeon HD 6250 integrated graphics, DirectX® 11 and Unified Video Decoder 3 for high definition visuals
Enjoy Full HD 1080p on a HDTV or big display via a HDMI connection.".

The processor is 15% slower than the Intel Atom N550, but the Gpu is 13 times faster than the integrated one in Atom N550 (3DMark06 1889 compared to 145).

And you can use it to play some casual games.

Please see my comment below they did a switch on me

  • HN at Marion (SA) have sold their last one half an hour ago. HN at Woodville (Port Rd, SA) still have a few

    • Gepps X (SA) had (31) when I rang this morning… & I saw 2 go during a quick stop-over visit to the store, with a friend, at about noon. Dunno how many more sold today…

  • None left at Capalaba Brisbane, 4 left at Carindale!!

  • -1

Hey guys thought I might let you know that in NSW Sydney (south) > Caringbah, Harvey Norman still has about 15 left. I bought 3 myself today :3 :3 :3!!

bought 3 ? why? why? why?

        • Suprise suprise he's now offering to sell this exact laptop in the forums (for a sweet premium).

  • Just picked one up from Penrith, they had them with an extra 1GB RAM (making total of 2GB) for an extra $50 if you want. He said they still had a few left.

    • +1

Normally, you remove a 1 GB SODIMM part & replace it with a 2 GB part.

Is this computer different? I hope so, 'cause I really hate pulling new parts & letting them collect dust… ;-/

At least, IF there's a 2nd SODIMM socket, I'm getting value from the original + the 2nd SODIMM part, as I move to 2 GB.

Can anyone confirm how the RAM upgrade goes

PS If it's like previous ASUS netbooks that we seen, then maybe the "offer" isn't a deal, after all… maybe they're just dumping SODIMM pull-outs, ie, from past customer RAM-upgrade jobs…?

Let us know what you find under that RAM-upgrade panel… ;-)

      • +1

HOLD THE PHONE !!!!! I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THEY SOLD ME A LESSER COMPUTER. When the salesman came out with the comp in the box he looked at the side of the box and said "oh this isn't a black one " I said no probs I dont care. Ihave just had a look underneath and it is a differentmodel no. it is an R101D which has the N455 processor in it!!!! Wait till I see that p#$%k tomorrow

        • +1

careful, for PC, even the most sophisticated buyer could be fooled or lost something.

  • Hi guys! I'm just wondering what battery you got with this machine. I got the 4400mah 47wh and it's rated at up to 10hours unlike the 13hours advertised by Harvey Norman. What about you guys?

    • My battery label reads same as what you have said. I dont know about 10 hours..

    • That's a bit ordinary if that's the case as that is the lowest model/battery of the of the 1015pem range (4400 47W/h - 10 hr rated) range and they are advertising the highest model/battery of the 1015pem range on their website (which I believe is meant to be the 63W/h - 13 hour rated).

      • If it's bait & switch ('cause how could you know before opening it), get 'em to swap JUST the battery out…

Netbooks & some laptops seem to be intentionally named & labeled to make it easy to fool even the more sophisticated buyer, eg, with a gazillion suffixes to an otherwise common model number (cf variations on HP Compaq's '620 model).

This should be investigated by your state's consumer affairs or - maybe ACCC - IMO.

        I say provide EITHER:

(accurate ad's + complete labeling) OR

(compel vendors to - on a cost-free basis - swap-out any/all missing or under-spec'd orig bits for the promised [spec'd] parts.

If they can't do that, then compensate buyers for enough, for their unwitting losses, ie, so vendors won't have as much incentive to do the wrong thing, in future.)

        Q.E.D ;-)

PS Wanna mount a "class action" complaint and/or suit? ;-/

      • That is correct … How do we get Harvey Norman to swap to better one that was advertised? May not agree I think

      • did anyone get the 63W/h with 13hours battery? if i am one of the only unlucky ones to get 47w/h with 10 hours battery life then i may go back to harvey norman and get it switched…

        • Please post what was your result.. I am keen to do it myself (ask for swap I mean) maybe first talk over phone? I bet they will cover themselves with "we picked it from ASUS standard product description " etc

        • Checked mine earlier. It is also the 10hr model.
I called HN and they looked into it and said that is the only one they have had and the website must just have the wrong info on it? They also noted that their in store spec/price tag notes that it is up to 10hr battery life.
They still had 6 on hand and they were all the same model/battery.
I wonder if all stores were like this and the website was actually incorrect or if some did manage to get the 13hr battery.

  • I didn't even realise until I came back home, my 1015PEM is a matte black. Did anyone manage to get glossy blacks?

    • The color-bar (on outside of box) indicate Matte or Glossy;
      SA seems to have Matte.

      To me, it's what's inside that count… ;-)

I want to know how fast a dual-core N550 cpu can make an otherwise modest notbook go.

      I don't expect miracles, but I wouldn't mind seeing it fly a bit faster than I expect either… :-)

  • Thanks OP for posting this.
Still 2 left at HN fountain gate

  • SOLD out at Liverpool
Got 1 at Campbelltown… plenty of stocks

  • Does anyone know how to upgrade to 2GB RAM…. where to purchase the extra 1 GB ram?

  • with the 2gb ram upgrade, can we just purchase 1gb ram or do we need to purchase a 2gb ram and switch it with the 1 gb?
also does switching the ram void the warranty?
