Is there any advantage to these anymore over say a Vodafone TV box for less money and way more functionality? Maybe package size, but the VodaTV isn't exactly big.
Read all about it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/466660
TLDR: The ultra is basically a way more reliable streaming option. The vtv is alright (but has some issues) and does everything at a ok level.
Thanks for the updated thread. Seems casting is the main issue. But the whole idea of a media player is to avoid casting by using native/sideloaded apps. Only disadvantage for me would be no PiP support for Kayo, but a native Kayo app is coming to solve that. I would use it mainly for Kodi/Kayo/Plex and Free to air DTV.
Yea if you don't want to cast, then you wouldn't look at this product. If you wanted to cast, this is the best option on the market for the price.
I use it in conjunction with my Media PC and it's fantastic. So easy to just walk in the tv room and hit cast from your phone, and the TV turns on and turns to the Chromecast input and starts playing. Really great. That and using your phone which is far easier to use than remotes etc.
@onlinepred: Yeah I have had an original Chromecast for many years. I still use it and although its good for those reasons you mention, I hate having to use my device everytime I want to control playback or load the next video as I often multitask and use the device for other things while I am watching TV. Also if I put something on for the kids using my device, and then leave to do my own thing they can't control the playback or load the next video (unless they are old enough to have their own devices and actually aren't too lazy to have them charged lol). Also some apps don't have volume control once casted, so I have to use a remote anyway. So for our household we find it easier with a remote. Also I hate not being able to cast Foxtel GO (due to Foxtel's greed) whereas with Kodi on VTV this is supported.
Once we have all SmartTV's with inbuilt chromecast in the house things would be much better as you can use either a device or the remote to control everything.
@Hazza: Yea I always have my phone, and volume always works for me, and hate finding remotes so each to their own haha. Also kids are on a seperate wifi for a reason haha.
@onlinepred: Yeah fair enough. I always have my phone too, but don't like being forced to use it if I am doing something else, am somewhere else, or have the remote in my (or my kids) hands already. If it came with a remote for that price it would suit perfectly as you could use either remote or device any time. Actually can you get a bluetooth/wifi remote for it? Kids on separate wifi would just mean more pain for me as then I wouldn't be able to see what they are casting, nor hit stop when they leave the room they are watching in after 5 minutes lol.
@Hazza: Ah my wifi is setup to monitor, restrict etc, so I don't have to hehe. They can't use wifi during certain times, don't have access to cast except from a dedicated shared phone next to couch for the kids. Even then, they are casting to a seperate Chromecast 😂
@onlinepred: HDMI CEC is your friend. Most latest TVs support CEC. Using that you can use TV remote to control Chromecast.
I have TV <-> Denon AV <-> Chromecast & Voda TV
My TV remote is able to control chromecast (pause play stop) and Voda TV (voda tv remote not needed at all)
@r0nmac: Yep that's how it turns my tv on. I only use phone though, no need for remote.
@r0nmac: Great tip r0nmac. That's exactly how I would want to use it too. I will look into it but my smart TV's are 2012-2014 spec so probably don't have it.
Yeah OnlinePred, I monitor/restrict with wifi too but don't bother with separate SSID. I tried the phone next to TV trick (with PeelRemote it can be used as a TV remote too) but it was worse than a remote as it was lost just as easily but runs out of batteries way quicker and was rarely put back on the charging dock lol.
Excuse the stupid question, but will this work with Google Stadia when released? or was another version of Chromecast for Stadia?
Which Chromecast devices are compatible with Stadia?
For launch in November, only the Google Chromecast Ultra will be compatible with Stadia, and you will also need a Stadia Controller and access to Stadia to play with Chromecast. -
At launch Stadia will be sold as a Founder's Edition with Chromecast Ultra, which enables up to 4k streaming for Stadia Pro subscribers.source
Beware: I purchased from the previous deal, and they sent me one that had already been linked to someone's account!
Waiting for them to get back to me :/
Make sure you actually get a 'Brand New' as advertised.
