I bought in the last deal and straight up probably the best sub-$100 purchase I've made in years. Heaps of fun. I picked up some second hand 3rd party pro controllers and have now successfully ruined friendships with Mario Kart and Smash Bros

edit: I should say - my Wii U Gamepad vibrating/rumble motor started making a weird noise and EB Games exchanged it with no questions. Just make sure you keep a copy of the receipt that EB Games issue, the eBay one didn't help them at all.

    • I also got one as part of the last sale. Can you tell me which pro controller you ended up getting?

      • Just a random one I found near me on fb marketplace - non genuine. Bought two pre-owned non-genuine ones from EB Games too.

These Wii U consoles such great value. Got two young kids and we use it all the time with the party games. Picked up 4 Wii motes for $10 from gumtree. Best thing I have bought in ages.

  • +1

Fallout 76 comes down to $7.2 at EB with pickup!

  • +2

If I didn't already have a Switch and all the Wii U ports, this would be an instant buy.

  • A few comments last time mentioned quality of these was questionable. trying to work out if I pick us this or wait for the Switch to drop, looking at this Christmas for the kiddies. Did anyone have luck with a fully functional one in a good state of repair?

    • Can always return it if it's average

    • Mine has been fine. Sure, the controller isn't the newest thing. But it operates fine.

I'd pay $79 for it again (I had the original one). Premium would have been slightly more beneficial for installing games to the HDD, but SD card is working fine for my needs.

      • You can install games to a USB hard drive / memory stick if that helps.

    • I bought premium and the console and remote were brand new.. Had a little bit of dust on grill next to the fan but a paint brush took it off in a min. Mine was also Mario kart 8 version so the game installed itself when I reset the console. Couldn't be happier. Budge two classic consoles from Amazon and my 5 year old, wife and I are having loads of fun family time. Worth every cent of you have kids.

      • I was hoping mine would have mk8 too but it didn't, do I need to reset the console to find out? It auto installed YouTube and a few other amino games after I turned it in but that was it.

        • I dont think mario kart will auto install when you reset the console, but if you go to the nintendo store it should be there as a free download if it was preinstalled on the console originally.

  • +1

Got this one last time and the console was in good knick, just had a scratch on the console itself. Also mine came with Mario kart 8 installed! (unsure if they all do, wasn't mentioned in listing)

    • I’d buy one if Mario kart is installed, would rather this than $60 for Crash Team racing on ps4

  • I got one of these Wii U basics on the Last deal for 75 bucks just for the hell of it. Homebrew and Wii U helper is amazing, have all these Nintendo classics Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart are fantastic. But bloody hell some of the game intros take an absolute age and you can't skip them. Mine did come covered in gunk on the controller and needed a serious clean as all buttons were sticking. There were scratches on the console itself but it works fine.

    • Plus you can play all the GameCube games on it, not emulated but actually running properly on the vwii.

      • +1

Link to which Homebrew you need for this? Didn't think it was possible! I assume you need the GameCube controller port adaptor made for smash Bros and a GameCube controller too? That's pretty expensive isn't it?

        • You can pick up a third party adaptor easily online for around $15 and a cheap third party controller for around $20-$25 (wired). If you own a switch as well that's pretty cheap in my opinion

        • +1

Don't install Wii or GC games to the vWii. Instead, set them up as Wii U Virtual Console Injections

You'll need to have hacked your Wii U to be able to install the injections.

All gamecube games and some Wii games will let you use the Wii U screen gamepad controller for player one.

        • Nintendont. And any adaptor, they so cheap on eBay. You can use your PlayStation controllers if you don’t want to buy gc adapter.

    • +3

Don't follow video guides. They become out of date so quickly. Follow this: https://wiiu.hacks.guide

    • Absolutely. You can do all of this. I've seen friends do this to three different Wii U's from EBGames in the last year or so.

    • If you want to follow a video guide, use this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28aytIdyyUQ
This is the one I used and it worked perfectly.

      • Seconded I used this too. There is a ton of old info out there this is the easiest way.

  • +1

I already have one but very tempted to get one for my nieces. So I or don’t I?

    • +6

Teach me your ways, kind philosopher. So you or don't you?

    • +1

If you're asking here you already know the answer.. BUY IT!

  • +7

Another thing i dont need but purchased… ;)

    • That's the OzBargain way :D

  • Round two of temptation, do I resist? I already have a Nintendo Switch which does not get used…

    • +2

Its a great machine for the collection or to play around with. But if your not playing the switch your most likely not going to play much of this unless your interested in the classics. In that case I strongly recommend

      • +1

And by classics you mean the best games of all time in the Zelda series, this was my main wish for the Switch to have access to the backlog of Zelda games but was pretty jaded when they made fun of Windwaker and Twilight Princess coming to Switch in their April fool's Nintendo Direct and had no news about them at E3. So the Wii U would be able to deliver on all the games especially with homebrew granting me access to the entire Zelda catalog.

        • +1

Trust me I meant Zelda when I said classics. That's the exact reason I bought it 😁 I agree the switch has been lacking with the back catalogue for sure. They will come but Nintendo seem to be holding off pulling the trigger, they must have something planned because they are sitting on a gold mine.

        • +1

Considering getting this to play all the Zelda games and XBC X. I already own TP Wii U bit not the console itself ha.

That April fools direct video was made by IGN btw, not Nintendo ;)

          • -1

@brokeneither: It made me sad either way, we all want Zelda backlog on Switch!

    • +1

      Just do it. Buy one.

      • +1

I caved and grabbed one, homebrew here we come!

    • +1

Just got one, how long before the wife notices…

  • Just ordered one, I've always been tempted to pick up a Wii u and for $100 shipped I reckon that's a major steal based on its capabilities

  • +2

** friendly word of warning, I recommend that you pick up in store so that you can check it out first. I bought one last time and when I went to pick it up the screen on the controller was slanted (wasn't put back in properly) and when I asked for a change they brought out another console that had mis-matched replacement thumbsticks and it was full of chips.

I did request to pick it up at another store instead and that one was perfect.

  • +2

PSA this isn't a portable like the Switch. Most will know this but I didn't. Luckily I researched a little before buying.

    • +1

And depending on the layout of your house and other network signalsfloating around the portability even at home may be very limited. I can't even play in another room with mine. It can get very fustrating.

    • Yes you have to be in range of the console to use the handheld screen.

    • +1

Thanks for clarifying. Will keep my money now :)

  • +2

Wii U is such an underated console. It's emulation abilities are amazing. You can play pretty much every single past nintendo game ever with one of these babies.

The Wii is the absolute best because it can do 240p output, but the Wii U is a close second.

    • But Wii cannot do HD. So would that mean Wii U absolute best?

      • Nah as games being output at resolutions they're not designed to will degrade the quality

        Best setup sounds to be:
Wii connected to quality CRT via Component (use for Wii games and any retro emulation)
Wii U connected to modern TV via HDMI for Wii U games.

Anything else would look pretty average I'd guess.

        • +3

I see what you mean. I remember playing Wii games on the CRT that I got from the op shop, they "looked" HD.

  • noob q, whats a wii u?

    • +2

A nintendo console released in 2012 and discontinued in 2017. It has HDMI out up to 1080p as well as a wireless gamepad/tablet that includes controls and a touch screen. Some games make use of the gamepad as a second display and some games allow for 'off tv' play where you can play entirely on the gamepad (but you still need to be within wireless range of the Wii U itself).

It is backwards compatible with Wii (previous console) games. It has an online store to buy Wii U games as well as a limited selection of "Virtual Console" games from previous systems (NES, SNES etc).

    • Here are some of the games:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBdltUXY3jI

  • Is it just me or does the Wii u have the slowest menu/game loading times of all consoles?! I got one in the last sale and have been quite put off by how slow it is to open apps/games.

    • Not just you. I can only compare to Wii, Oxbox, NDS, 3DS and N3DS, but far long loading than any of those. Played from internal storage fwiw.

  • -5

just be aware that the eshop for WiiU doesn't exist any more, so you CANNOT buy any of the Virtual Console games needed to hack the Wii U, nor can you buy games online any more (if that is something you want) and the Nintendo WiiU network goes permanently offline in Feb 2020.

    • Source?

      • check the forums on gbatemp.net - some discussion about the recent firmware update 5.54 (no idea if hackable) and discussion about eshop for WiiU closing.

        • +1

Thanks, didn't realise it had a new update.

    • So you can't jail break anymore?

    • +2

The Wii one shut down. Wii U one hasn't. This matters only if you want games on Wii VC that weren't re-released on the Wii U one like the Square SNES titles.

    • +1

I believe the WiiU is still hackable, you just need to run the browser exploit every time you reboot the console (rather than the VC mod you're referring to being permanent).

It's been a while since mine was out of the box but I think that's how mine works (much like the PS3Hen and PS4 4.55 hacks)

    • -1

I have not checked (couldn't be bother digging my WiiU out of storage) about buying games online, so I may be wrong - I was going off what recent forum discussion in the USA was talking about eshop and WiiU.

    • What happens to games I purhcased digitally? Not looking forward to my play station games dissapearing one day considering I have a large digital library :|.

      • +1

Playstation & XBOX stores are still running for old consoles. The Sony PSP store closed down but you can still buy PSP content from the web store and push it to your PSP from the download list or by connecting your PSP to a PS3 and queueing the download through your PS3.

    • +2

Best to check your sources before spreading false information. The Wii U eshop still works fine and games can be bought. I just checked then. The original Wii Shop Channel was closed earlier this year, but that's the Wii virtual console, not the Wii U virtual console which is different.

Nintendo will make an announcement when they decide to close the Wii U eshop.

  • +4

I hacked my Wii U about a week ago so it's definitely still possible. Used Brain Training on the eshop. You can load an app onto the homescreen so you no longer have to use the browser exploit every time, just open the app.

    • +1

Yeah, just don't permanently install the hack, as if you delete the channel, it will brick the Wii U.

      • +2

or just move the channel to the far right screen of your nand boot so you never have a chance of deleting it :)

      • +2

just create a folder on the very end of your grid and call it dont touch and keep all the system stuff in there that is sensative. I have a CBHC and its wonderful, goots straight into CFW, the games i use all the time are installed in the system memory nand, everything else is off external HDD, great to play GC games also. I play the hell out of this consule with my 2 young boys. Mario Kart 8 all the way. Plenty of guides on youtube or gbatemp

        • +1

I wanted to eliminate all risk (although ultra small) in case my little one decides to venture off in there and find it one day and deletes it. I just have to press the channel and it loads in 5 seconds.

How awesome is Wii U Helper? Has every game made. Such a great console.

  • The returns policy for EB Games through Ebay is confusing.

There is a) 30 day faulty and change of mind returns on the listing (we pay return postage), b) 7 day change of mind returns on the EB Games site, and c) No returns on opened consoles (including pre-owned) according to their Twitter. If I buy and try it out and then decide against it, am I going to be stuck with it or able to return it?

    • I think they dont return 'change of mind' on opened consoles. Change of mind is only for unopened and you have 7 days.

      • Out of curiosity, are the pre-owned consoles sealed? When I had bought one a few years ago, it wasn't in an official box and was unsealed.

Their website has the "If for any reason you are not 100% happy with your purchase, we can provide you with a full refund or exchange if you return it to us within 7 days after you receive the goods" on the WiiU console page too. Odd!

        • Just collected the console. Not sealed.

          • @z3ro: Was it in the original box or just a generic one?

            • +1

@Master Bates: Generic one. Everything inside wrapped in bubble wrap. Was expecting a better condition, proved wrong.

  • Code says no longer available. Edit OK had to add code last then worked.

  • +1

    Just got one, thanks :)

  • +3

Didn't know they took trade ins on the PS mini, smart really, considering so many people would buy these, play for five minutes, then throw in the bin.

The PS1 classic is a kickass lil console when you open it up to play roms, and
The Wii U is an absolute beast too. Pirate all the Wii U, Wii, and GameCube games you want and run them on native hardware with little to no effort? Fantastic.

Go buy them both honestly. Wii U for Wii/WiiU/GC/N64 and earlier games, and PS1 for a big ol' pile of PS1 roms (can also play DC, PSP and earlier AFAIK), well worth it for the both of them. Too busy to really get into it, but both are well worth a purchase at this price.

  • So still completely hackable ?

    • +5

Are you taking the proverbial? Every one of the last 100 comments have this answer in some form. In a word, yes.

  • Any experience with Virginia Surety? At first for $9 I thought it was a decent offer, till I realised it wasn't from EB Games.

  • +1

Didn't realise the PS Classic was also pre-owned -_-

  • Anyone in Brisbane north want to show me how to do the whole Homebrew bells and whistles thing? I tried it once and all I could do was install the games onto the console using loadiine and that was the best I could do. PM me.
