  • Damn, after a 5W-40 that meets MB 229.5.

Hmm, it is on special https://www.sparesbox.com.au/part/liqui-moly-synthoil-energy…

  • What’s the advantage of this oil over something like a Castrol Edge 5w-30 that’s about half this price when on sale?

Specially if your car is serviced annually at a minimum.

    • Does the Castrol have this?

      "Approvals: ACEA C3; API SN; BMW Longlife-04; MB-Freigabe 229.31; MB-Freigabe 229.51; Porsche C30; VW 504 00; VW 507 00"

      • BMW Longlife 04, Mercedes Benz 229.31/229.51, Porsche C30 and VW 504 00/507 00 OEM approved
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is suitable for use in vehicles fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters.

        Yep

        • Edit: realised from the comment below there's a few different Castrol EDGE in 5w-30. So yeah, needs to be comparable product.
IF it has the same standards, then go for it, but seems the Long Life is not the one thats on sale usually.

    • Honestly if your manufacturer doesn’t require these approvals/specs, nothing.

The Castrol Edge you see @ half price for $35 or so does NOT meet the same specs as this one.

Castrol Edge LL (Long Life) is equivalent to the LIQUI MOLY Top Tec 4200. Castrol Edge LL is never half price.

That Edge is 502/505 not 504/507 approved. Having said that, been using 502/505 in a Mk5 R32 for over a decade and the engine is still reasonably tight.

      • Agreed, nothing wrong with 502/505, but it's not (has good as) 504/507 if your new car needs 504/507

Having said that I still use 502/505 in my MkV GTI, however I've gone thicker 5w40 (still meets 502/505) as it burns oil in it's old age.

    Read this as Liquid Molly..

$75 gets you what 4~5 pills in Melbourne? I thought it was a bargain.

    • Glad I'm not the only one, phew.

  • not familiar with the other car makers, but MB 229.51 and MB 229.31 approved oils are intended for diesel engines and not recommended for petrol

  • For those that want an alternative, Nulon 5w-30 Euro spec is great. Regularly goes on sale for 20-30% off at places like Supercheap.

Been waiting for them to sell it at this price again, but I don't think it's going to happen:
